I can follow directions just fine. But when something doesn’t work or doesn’t fit exactly like they show it in the YouTubr video, I have zero ability to figure out what to do next or how to fix it. And almost always find a way to somehow make it worse when I try.

Many of the how-tos on these topics on YouTube either presuppose existing knowledge (for example, they might tell you where to attach the live and ground wires, but assume that you already know how to identify those, and how to handle them safely.) Or they require access to tools and/or a workshop that not everyone has. Many seem to be intended to add a new technique to people who are already 'in the hobby.' And a huge chunk is less about guiding new people, and more about the presenter showing off how awesome they are.

There are absolutely good guides out there, but they're not always easy to find.

I knew this would get some of your fired up, but the reality is if you want to learn about everything you just said, you can do it on youtube or the library. Not learning it is a choice.

I know this because i am incredibly cheap and will go out my way to do things myself and save money. I would rather take some time to research and learn about the topic than throw away money hiring someone.

I also know my limits. In my 30s i re-roofed my house, but now in my 50s i would hire someone, becuase its not worth the physical risk.

Oh, absolutely. That applies to almost anything, from dance, to cooking, to stage magic. But it's not always as simple as just watching a couple of videos and following along - you often need to spend considerable time and money getting up to speed.

Still, back on topic. Trump is a big dummy head, and can't even install an end table.

Back to our more interesting derail, I have rudimentary hand tool skills and can even operate the simplest power tools, but the arthritis in my hands makes handling even a screwdriver challenging now. My amateur repair days, such as they were, are over.

I thought I could perform just minor surgery using YouTube videos, but big insurance companies put a stop to that.

I can often get to where I need to but I also often have a shitfit finding what I'm looking for through google or youtube searches. Like x 2009 Ford Focus and six pages deep I start finding a Ford Focus and the year 2013 and the model is nothing like mine. On the other side, you go to work on a faucet and they need to know the exact make and model and I'm like, well, I can start taking stuff apart and trying to match what I see or... buy a new one...

Then there are those who want to give a two minute tutorial on a 30 minute job with the supposition you already have a necessary background because they get their click through to ramble without teaching or walking you through a thing.

I do use youtube a lot and I've fixed a lot appliances and done some automotive work with it. And when I did computer stuff, it was a godsend even if I'd have to go pretty deep down the rabbit hole to find what I was looking for, it was always there somewhere.

Trump keeps pushing the absurd right-wing fantasy that kids are going to school and getting trans surgery there. As in, your kid gets on the bus as a boy and comes home as a girl.

Fact check: school nurses cannot only not perform surgery but cannot supply Tylenol without written parental permission.

I like how he's been fact-checked since starting this bizarre rant earlier in the week, but facts don't matter when you're a cult leader.

This could just be Trump being stupid.

But an alternative and far more ominous explanation is that Trump isn't just being stupid. Instead, Trump thinks his best shot to regain power isn't to actually win an election. I think he may think his best shot to regain power is to convince his cult that any election result in which he doesn't win is illegitimate, and the optics of Trump leading early and then having that lead wiped out as mail-in votes are counted furthers his narrative that he (and they) have been cheated.

That's my fear.

As you guys know my wife works in an elementary school. So I asked her about some various situations and how the school would be required to handle it. Here were her responses:

I asked her what would happen if a child said they wanted to be called by a different name/pronoun. She said the parent would be contacted, and if the parent agreed, they would need to fill out a form with the preferred name/pronouns. Staff would not just start calling a child by a different name or pronoun without parental consent. In most cases, parents with transgender kids already have this straightened out before the start of the school year.

I asked her what limits school nurses had on dispensing medication (much less surgery!). She said that unless the child has a medication on file with precise instructions on when and how the school is allowed to administer it, the staff cannot give any sort of medication. That means if a kid got a headache and went to the school nurse, the nurse would not be allowed to even give them children's Tylenol. Note - the parent would not even be able to give verbal consent over the phone. If the parent wants the kid to have Tylenol, they would literally have to drive to the school and administer it to their own child.

Trump, like a lot of people, has no fucking clue how schools actually work. In almost all cases, parents are the ultimate powerholders. The state has laws that must be abided by in terms of vaccinations, districting, etc. but schools operate from a position to A) protect their students and B) not get sued. So everything outside of the norm is documented, documented, documented.

P.S. Kids aren't using litter pans either. The number of times I've seen people I thought were reasonably intelligent trot that one out as the gospel truth still astounds me.
