Ted Cruz is on the case:
"I'm a big believer that we should follow the science and follow the evidence. If you look at global warming alarmists, they don't like to look at the actual facts and the data. The satellite data demonstrate that there has been no significant warming whatsoever for 17 years.... Today the global warming alarmists are the equivalent of the flat-earthers. You know it used to be: 'It is accepted scientific wisdom the Earth is flat.' And this heretic named Galileo was branded a denier."
This guy is an influential senator and a presidential candidate. What a country we live in.

It's true! In fact, Galileo was completely funded by the East India Company, the Medicis, and Hamburg's Köch brothers, all of whom wanted to get their hands on some sweet globe-al trade.
It's like these climate alarmists don't even know how science works.

Nah, nevermind.

It certainly doesn't help the level of discourse here when people (on both sides) label politicians they don't like with ridiculous names.
Can everyone grow up a bit and quit that? Might be nice to go through an election cycle without people calling politicians douchebags and the like.

I see Cruz's candidacy as a symptom of a really disheartening trend in the GOP which the republican voters need to fix. He needs to be ridiculed for many of the idiotic ideas he espouses and the fantasyland he campaigns in, and he has no business even being considered for the presidency. He's just the latest in a long series of nonsensical blowhards who think they can be president... ever since the Palin nomination, I'd say, they've come out of the woodwork.

Why should they? Not like the Democrats do anything about their nutjobs.
As resources dwindle, it could force many women to barter sexual favors for food and water, the resolution stated.
“[F]ood insecure women with limited socioeconomic resources may be vulnerable to situations such as sex work, transactional sex, and early marriage that put them at risk for HIV, STIs, unplanned pregnancy, and poor reproductive health,” it read.
The resolution concluded by saying Congress must recognize the “disparate impacts of climate change on women,” and must encourage the use of “gender-sensitive frameworks in developing policies to address climate change.”
Lee introduced a similar resolution in the last Congress, but it didn’t go anywhere. Lee said in 2013 that her resolution is meant to remind policymakers that more women need to be included in discussions about how to respond to the changing climate.

I don't see anything close to as batshit insane crazy here. Food insecure women with no economic resources are vulnerable to what they claim.
But even if your example here was worse, who cares? It's to the benefit of the country for the GOP to come back to reality. Just like it is was when Democrats do (such as when Tipper Gore lost influence on the Dems). Didn't your parents teach you that just because your brother is doing it too it doesn't make it right? This kind of shit drove my parents from hosting the local Republican caucus to being damn-near straight Dem ticket voters. And judging by LM's comments they are not alone.

Someone misspeaking is still not anywhere near the ludicrous policy beliefs these GOP candidates have. I.E. any candidate who thinks that defaulting on the debt is a good idea has no business not being laughed out of the room.
All of these GOP Candidates *think* they are Reagan and try to act like it, and they're not even up to Jimmy Carter/Gerald Ford levels.
Find an equivalent, outrageously idiotic policy position from right-wing folk enemies Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid for example. Not just a one-off statement but a policy position which they have championed in perpetuity.

I thought this as good of a place as any for a little chuckle.
[urlhttp://arstechnica.com/science/2015/03/arizona-court-protects-climate-scientists-e-mails-from-think-tank/]Via Ars Technica[/url]
A group is suing under FOIA to get emails from universities of scientists who are doing global warming research. Lower courts have held that such email are not subject to FOIA because they discuss students and ongoing research.
The court was given 90 e-mails considered "typical" of the remaining 1,700 to determine if the state was acting arbitrarily. The task was daunting; one e-mail chain took up over 800 pages when printed, and the court found that "to describe the content of the emails as technical and esoteric is an understatement." Nevertheless, the court concluded that the documents were as the Board of Regents described them, and thus that their decision not to disclose them was not arbitrary.

Some judges barely understand how to use email and these were asked to wade through an email that was 800 printed pages long. Barring someone in the chain working in ASCII graphics, that had to be brutal.

The odds of a full-blown El Niño occurring are now just 50 to 60 percent, down from 65 percent last month, according to the monthly report from the U.S. Climate Prediction Center, released this morning.
Odds increase
In its monthly update, the U.S. Climate Prediction Center today said the odds of El Niño continuing into Northern Hemisphere summer have increased to 70 percent.
This is up from 50 to 60 percent last month.
...
Will this El Niño finally provide some relief from the record-setting drought in California?
We probably shouldn’t get our hopes up too high, because this El Niño is still weak. Moreover, today’s Climate Prediction Center update cautions that “model forecast skill tends to be lower during the Northern Hemisphere spring, which limits the forecast probabilities of El Niño through the year.” Lastly, it notes that there is still “considerable uncertainty as to how strong this event may become.”

Republicans vote to gut NASA's (and the NSF's) Earth and Space Sciences budget(s):
Yesterday, by a party-line vote, Republicans in the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology approved a budget authorization for NASA that would see continued spending on Orion and the Space Launch System but slash the agency's budget for Earth sciences. This vote follows the committee's decision to cut the NSF's geoscience budget and comes after a prominent attack on NASA's Earth sciences work during a Senate hearing, all of which suggests a concerted campaign against the researchers who, among other things, are telling us that climate change is a reality.
One would think that if the GOP were actually convinced that Climate Change was either a)Natural, or b)not Man-made, they would invest in research that could prove/disprove that.
But no, they opt for head-in-the-sand approaches. "lalalalalalala - we're not listening - lalalalalala"

400 ppm. Locally? Been done. Multiple locations? Old hat. Monthly global average?
Ding!
NOAA reports the monthly global average concentration of the greenhouse gas has surpassed 400 parts per million for the first time.
This isn’t good. In fact, the last time it happened was up to 5 million years ago.
...
One of the problems with carbon dioxide levels: Even if all human carbon emissions stopped immediately, it would take quite a while for CO2 to be cleansed from the atmosphere.
...
What’s scariest: 400 ppm means CO2 levels are increasing faster than ever before in recorded history.

More CO2 leads to faster, lusher plant growth and higher O2 concentrations. That's partly what enabled giganticism during the age of the dinosaurs (dragonflies with 2-foot wingspans, 8-foot-long millipedes, etc). Not that it's likely to play out the same way this time, but running out of O2 is not high on the risk list.

Depends on what you consider a win. Global warming isn't going to wipe out the human race, barring a Venus-type runaway greenhouse effect...and the odds of that are vanishingly small. The realistic worst case is widespread economic and environmental disruption with resource wars and refugee crises leading to a breakdown of civilization and a population collapse and the mass extinction of less adaptable species. That's what we're flirting with if we do nothing.
