Does Sicilian have the sauce on top? Because Detroit puts the sauce on top, and uses a lot of it.

Saw somebody review Giordano's and he really dug it. Might have to try it in Orlando. The crust looked thin and flaky, almost like my grandmother's pie crust.

Noticed my $4 Great Value Three Meat Pizza box artwork looked different. They now consider it a Three Meat Pizza because the pepperoni is made with chicken, pork, and beef. LOL Cheaters!

The kind of Sicilian that you get in NY is very similar to the Detroit that I just had: a thick crust, fluffy but crispy on the edges. Not "deep dish" in the Chicago sense, but thick and baked in a pan. I guess the difference is the cheese going to the edges.

I've had Giordano's in Chicago and oddly enough in Canton, Ohio. The Chicago one was really good if you like a lot of cheese. The Canton one was good but not as good as Chicago. My guess is the original restaurants still do it the right way and the chain ones drift a bit.

I do remember ordering 4 pizzas from the one in Chicago and the bill was a little over $200.00, so it's definatly expensive.

"Detroit Style" is shoot off of Sicilian, I think. It's just generally thicker and again cooked specifically that the thicker crust caramelized with the oil and specifically with the cheese and sauce which extends right to the pan, giving it brownie like texture with dough. Traditional Sicilian, which square, does not have that brownie like texture.

As you mention, it is not deep dish like Chicago, which is layered in thicker in the pan and is a smaller pizza with way less dense of a dough.

I'm still of a mind to try Giordano's one of these days, might need to make a facebook marketplace trip to Orlando. The best ample cheese pizza I ever had was a now defunct spot right next to the UF campus named Cassidy's Pizza in the early 80s. Their pizzas looked like bowls of bread that were hugely full of cheese and a bit of sauce. :wub:

At the moment, I have to settle for Marco's, as Jet's is just to far away for me to be in the delivery zone.

I haven't had Jet's since before I started calorie counting. Now that I've hit my goal weight, maybe it's time splurge and eat a couple few slice of Jet's for three days straight. Man, I can imagine it right now.

slightly off topic. The town where I live only had 3 pizza shops until recently when Dominos opened. The wife and I decided to try it and holy crap was it garbage. I would rank it under Little Caesar's even. The breading was probably the worst part about it, followed closely by the sauce. Just bad all around. Luckily we do have two other locally owned pizza shops that are decent, but none of them are great.

My kids love Domino's. I think it tastes like an insult to pizza. But I will give them credit. No matter which Domino's location you use, the taste will be consistent.

My favorite pizza near me is Krauses, which features a double crust. It's a thin layer of crust and cheese on top of the other ingredients. It's delicious. Hepcat may have had it back when he lived in Ohio.

If you think Domino's is bad now you should have tried it in the 90s. They even crafted a whole marketing campaign around "we know our pizza sucks, and we intend to do something about it". I'm not sure that much honesty even exists anymore. :lol:

The closest one to New Philly is in Strasburg. If you order make sure to get the double crust.

I discovered today that a Dominoes opened even closer to us than one I thought was already too close. My wife is fond of garbage pizza, having nothing but in the Philippines. I can't see how they survive here in the land of awesome pizza options, however. That goes double for Pizza Slut and Papa Johns, both which are even closer.

Little Caesars Detroit three meat deep dish is now the way to go for me. As soon as I get it home it goes into a pan that's been liberally coated with butter to pan fry, and it receives a large measure of sautéed mushrooms on top. Lid on the pan to get everything good and hot. Bottom of pizza to a dark golden color. Maybe some black olives too. :wub: Crushed red pepper and shaker parm to finish it off.

That's getting close to a garbage pizza and a garbage Detroit Deep Dish is my absolute favorite. Ham, Pepperoni, Sausage, burger, bacon, green peppers, pepper rings, onions, mushrooms, black olives. :wub:

All pizza styles originated somewhere. The most common in the US is Sicilian, with variations. That's probably what you're thinking of as "pizza style."

I've probably already posted about South Shore bar pizza, our homegrown variety. It's very popular and ubiquitous in our very small geographic region. This place is walking distance from my house:

"BOSSS" is "Boston South Shore" and "Bah" is how we pronounce "bar." As you might expect, most SS bar pizza is made and served in bars, but this takeout place is doing brisk business.

Jewel Osco recently added a new style of frozen Detroit style pizza I hadn't tried before. Buddy's Pizza. I guess they're a chain of restaurants out east.

I absolutely loved it. The cheese is on top of everything, which gives it more of a Chicago deep dish feel, but the crust is all Detroit style.

Unfortunately, it looks like Jewel has stopped carrying it in any of the stores near me. :(

:lol: I guess Detroit is out east of Chicago. Buddy's claims to be the originator Detroit style. I'm not sure of the accuracy of that boast but if they weren't first, they were still among of the first. They've only become a small chain in the last decade or so. Previous to that they were about three locations, I think. I haven't tried their frozen version yet. I look at it every once in a while but for the cost, I think I'll just pay a few dollars more and get one from a pizzeria. They're pretty spendy at the grocer.

Also while their classic little grease cup pepperoni is awesome, their best is the Six Mile but I can't recommend it to you as you don't seem to like that sort of thing. :tjg:

Hmmm....one of the reviews made it sound like they were a New England chain selling Detroit Style pizzas. My mistake.

If it tastes like Jet Pizza, then yes. I just don't like awful pizza. :lol:

But if it's good Detroit style pizza, then I'd probably like it.

But again, Jet Pizza is crap. I mean, if there was a God of Pizza, then surely there's a Satan of Pizza...and he'd be the one in the kitchen in Hell yelling at the cooks to work out a way to make an even crappier pizza than Jet.

You'd hear him/her yelling out "ADD PIECES OF PLASTIC AND ANYTHING YOU FIND IN AN ALLEY THAT MOVES TO THIS!".

And it would still probably be better than a Jet pizza. :P

To my tastes, Buddy's is a lot like Jet's, in general, so I assumed what you didn't like was the garbage pizza. While the two are different they're similar enough that I'm having a hard time comprehending how you can like one and hate the other. I can see how Little Caesar's could be seen as substantially different enough that you would create a line but Jet's and Buddy's are in the same ballpark. (I imagine most people around here like Buddy's more if nothing else because Buddy's has the mystical claim over being the original)

I'm not sure why you can't comprehend this. It's because the one time I ordered Jet Pizza, I got a flavorless chunk of cardboard. The one time I ate Buddy's, I got a great pizza with flavor. It really is that simple. :)

Sort of related video where he rates fast food pizza. He is in Texas so it is sort of regional but I have most of these in my area. Surprised he didn't know Papa Murphy's was a thing but in the end he had the same opinion of their pizza as I have.

Wow. I know they aren't happy with them but Jet's, Little Ceasar's, Hungry Howie's, Domino's, and Marco's are all SE Michigan based chains. And we have so so many more. We have a lot of pizza chains here and a lot of mom and pop shops. And so many that are so good outside of the ones listed. They got the LC specialties wrong. LC specials is just their deep dish pepperoni.

Domino's being the number one seller after the 80s and their delivery model had less meaning makes no sense to me. It's the worst of all of the whole list, Papa John's inclusive, or was, when last I had one I don't know how many years ago.

Interesting they give Costco high marks because it's cheap but gave LC a D which made cheap pizza a thing.

I was surprised Chuck E Cheese is its own pizza enterprise. I always assumed their pizza was supplied by someone else.

Never had a Mod, Blaze or, Papa Murphys. Mod and Blaze both showed up around here and the largely disappeared almost instantly. I think there is a Mod left but it's in horrible location next to an Olga's, so if I were to drive to that PITA place, I get me me ham and cheese Olga with some Olga bread instead.

Maybe I misunderstood what you meant, but LC has specials on their classic pizzas too. I usually get them for the gang on gaming days when I don’t feel like making chili, a pot roast or whatever because it’s like 25 bucks to feed 4 guys.

We still have Dominoes, Papa John's, and Pizza Hut. None are really worth it, although Papa John's is better than the other options, mostly due to how awful Dominoes and PH have gotten.

The ones I miss: Straw Hat and Round Table.

I haven't had a fast food pizza in longer than I can remember, but there's a Domino's with a drive-through less than five minutes from my new house, so I reckon we'll be giving them a chance before I can unpack and set up my kitchen next week. If it's fast, convenient, and cheap, I don't expect high quality.

I'm going to miss Uno's, though. There are no Unos within striking distance of the new place.
