Well, it's more than that. It's also that there are large industries (healthcare, insurance) built up around the current system, the beneficiaries of any change are dispersed, plus the size of the current system makes people risk averse on change.

You'll wait days for urgent care. You'll get random doctors of unknown quality. Hospitals are dirty and run down.
These are bogeyman for those benefitting from the current system and those who set policy.
You don't hear:
You won't be bankrupted by necessary medical care.
You will have access to necessary medical care regardless of ability to pay.
You won't be assigned to a second class doctor or sent to a second class hospitals because of inability to pay.

As much as I sometimes rant in frustration about people getting what's coming to them I also know the cost of their irrational behavior and saddened by the needless suffering and loss of life.

Meanwhile I still see streams of people I know that are saying this is all bs. I never knew one person could do so much damage. I always felt that was something that happened in other places. Not anymore... We're going to have epic amounts of death and then the economic downfall will be just as devistating. I legit don't want to associate with anyone that supports this shit. And sadly that includes my father. He just knows to never mention it around me.

Baghdad Pence is speaking at HHS. It essentially boils down to it ain't so bad, Trump bought us time, and we are well prepared to deal with this. Cool.
Birx is saying this surge is millenials getting tests and lower risk people in general but interesting to say the least.

Florida’s coronavirus cases are exploding, with 8,942 more cases since the day before, according to data released Friday.
The state responded with an order for bars to stop serving alcohol, a ban already in place in South Florida. There’s been a concern that most of the new cases this month involve younger people who have been disregarding social distancing guidelines.
That may be only the first step in response to Friday’s new daily case record, which easily broke the previous high mark of 5,511 cases two days ago. It’s been a relentless, monthlong surge of COVID-19 infections, and hospitals are beginning to fill up.
After seeing how this all played out in NY/NJ, this is mind-boggling to me. What happened to us was partially avoidable. What's happening now in FL was likely largely avoidable.
But the last 10 days really illustrate the unprecedented rise of infections. From June 17 through Friday, the state added 42,851 cases. To put this in perspective, the state added only 7,444 cases in the same period last month, from May 17 to May 26.
It's insane.
Listening to Fauci now. Can't wait to get the quotes/transcript but he's changed the message and reiterating that individual decisions have community consequences. I'm sure the sociopaths are going to rage.

Well Smoove I believe the word you’re looking for to describe what Comrade Fauci is saying is...Socialism!
Better to get the Chinese flu and unknowingly infect ten others, overload our hospitals, potentially kill people with a higher mortality risk and prolong our economic shutdown as reopened establishments become hot spots than wear a communist made mask and practice socialized distancing.

That's eerily on-point.
The number of social media posts I've seen in the last ~36 hours regarding the laminated card that REQUIRES a business give you ADA accommodations over your MEDICAL REFUSAL to wear a mask is beyond embarrassing. How do these people think surgeons manage to work without dying from hypoxia or CO poisoning?

Yeah, I don't know what they're holding over Birx but she's either a full-cult member now -or- she fears for the safety of a family member. I have no explanation as to why someone with her background would be saying or acting the way she is. There really are days when I think there's some type of pheromone in Trump's flop-sweat that confuses and dazzles the people around him into thinking he has all the answers and should be supported at all costs.

I wonder if her and Fauci agreed on a “good cop, bad cop” role with Fauci drawing on his decades of service as a shield to speak truth to power. And when he’s finally purged there will be at least one adult left since Azar, the CDC fat guy, the silent Surgeon General, and Pence Wormtongue won’t exactly cut it.

The city of Charleston voted to require face masks in public places starting July 1. People without them can be fined. There are exceptions to places that require them, but at least it a small step in the right direction. Not sure why they would wait until July 1 to start the requirement, though.

They're probably waiting because if there's a fine involved, they need to give people the opportunity to get masks. Of course, everyone should have one (or more!) by now, but that's the safer thing to do from an enforcement standpoint.

I'm beginning to think I'm weird for (1) reading directions on the products I'm using and (2) wearing PPE when instructed to do so. It's entirely possible this is the first safety device some people are being told they must wear. It would certainly explain the resistance a bit.

Having worked in the lab kind of makes one shrug at mask wearing. It's a pain in the ass but you understand the need. So I understand how the public in general may be a bit resistant since it's something that folks don't do in their normal routine.
That said, the American people has had months of watching the Northeast, Pacific Northwest and other early hot spots go through a lack of PPE, bed shortages, visuals of refrigerated morgue trucks, etc. So if after all that you don't get it, fuck off.

Seatbelt? Helmet? And there is resistance those too. Especially the later. (Though I gotta admit, if I still had it in me to ride a bicycle, I'd not wear a helmet. Motorcycle? Hell yeah. Bicycle, nope.)
I don't think there is resistance to hunter orange, but I'm not in touch with that crowd even a little any more.

There is nothing logical going on here. Masks are just a symbol.
In the gun community there is a huge resistance to masks. These are people who carry a gun around 24-7 on the 1 in 1,000,000 chance that they will need it to protect their life. They carry knives and extra magazines for additional 1 in 1,000,000 events. Their unyielding cry is, "my life and my family's lives are worth protecting." Great, I get it.
But then it's "masks? Masks are for pussies! If I die, I die!"

I like the message, I'm not sure it's going to reach the right people but the good news voting wise is that it puts POTUS at odds with a lot of the people who voted for him. There aren't a whole lot of 65+ year olds out there screaming about their freedom not to wear masks that I can see. I'm legit surprised Florida is not in political meltdown right now.

Yup. The "solution" to covid is so simple: Avoid crowds, and wear a mask when you can't. If everyone would just cooperate, we'd knock this thing back to a low simmer in short order.

I like wearing my main mask. A very sweet Afghan girl made it for me and all the proceeds went to charity. It's a nice flower print for the outer layer and the inner layer is becoming frayed due to so many washings.
It reflects my personality.

Unfortunately this is something we are hearing out of FB bubbles on the right. It has gone from free-dumb to them hearing that masks cause breathing problems, that they cause you to get sick, etc. He might be a little crazy but we are starting to see that a lot of folks have been misled to act this way.

Do surgeons and nurses and woodworkers and painters get sick from wearing masks?
My BIL is a trauma surgeon, and he pointed out that he routinely goes masked 8-10 hours almost every day for weeks at a time, and he has done so for years. If he can handle it, so can Billy-Ray Bob the Alligator Repairman or whoever.

One of my neighbors went on the anti-mask crusade today and promptly got told to "Just wear the fucking mask" by his own FB friends.
He then backpedaled and said his resistance was because of all the misleading information on whether masks were effective or not. He then promptly got told, "If it's even a tiny bit effective, isn't it worth the miniscule amount of effort it takes for you to wear it?" To which he finally just huffed out of his own thread with a statement of "Well then I must just be a dumbass."

I don't know how many public meetings I've been too; too many to count. I've never seen or experienced anything even remotely close to what these various videos are showing. I'm not even sure if I'd know how to act, or at least what I should not being doing or saying to make it worse.
I know it's been said before, but all this reinforces that we absolutely have a mental health crisis in the United States.
