Re: Video Games Randomness - Prioritize specific game threads!
From PC Gamer: A lickable screen that can imitate flavours is in development
Food in fantasy can be such an oddly evocative part of the overall experience, especially in videogames. Just like in movies and books, it can serve as just a small garnish adding to the overall build of the world by showing us what people who actually live there would eat, but often it goes a bit further. In games you often have to acquire, or at least make the food and often the meals will provide benefits like health or power. Food in some games can be the whole point, or just a glimpse into a deeper world, but they all lack flavour.
Surely I’m not alone in saying I want to actually be able to taste videogame food. The dishes I make in Genshin Impact are so beautiful and often claim heritage to the cities they’re made. It almost seems like a crime that I don't get to eat them. Please, allow me to experience the feast of a Monster Hunter before the hunt, or the preparation meal of rebalanced food before going off on a raid in Valheim. I want to taste the bones that make for a crunchy chick in Fable 4. At least, I think I do.
Finally I have proof that I am not entirely alone. Reported by Reuters, a lickable TV screen prototype has been developed by Meiji University professor, Homei Miyashita. The Taste the TV, or TTTV imitates the flavours of food by spraying a combination of 10 different flavours to get the desired effect. If we can mix three different colours of light to make almost infinite colours, why not. The flavour is then applied by a hygienic film that rolls out over the screen, ready for licking. It’s a bit of a Covid nightmare, but so long as people don’t go sharing screens, it could also be a Covid dream.

The Version Of Bully 2 You'll Never Get To Play
For a while in the late 2000s, developers at Rockstar New England thought they were working on the next big Rockstar game.
They were excited to push the company’s tech and to bring a cult hit into Rockstar’s vision for the future. They were excited for the chance to prove themselves as a Rockstar studio, having recently been purchased by the company. They were excited to lead development on Bully 2, the sequel to Rockstar’s critically acclaimed open-world adventure about life in a private school.
But things don’t always go as planned, and other obligations on a release schedule get in the way of passion projects. Rockstar New England’s Bully 2 was shelved in favor of other, more troubled projects in development, like Max Payne 3 and Red Dead Redemption.

I don't understand why it is so common for me to have to check the file status of my games because after working for years they suddenly stop. The latest was Civ 5 and 3 files were bad. But every month almost I have games "going bad" with old age.

So, NFT's & Gaming. I think this is the right place to post this. If not, I could always create a new topic.
Does anyone feel it offputting that some of these major developers, ie Ubisoft, Square Enix, are putting so much emphasis on NFTs in their games? Oh, they say it's only the beginning, but I can't help but feel a sense of foreboding when they all seem to put all their eggs in one basket. On their end, I can see them doing it for money, but... I think they're caught up in the buzz thinking of how popular they want them to be. These companies appear to be so desperate to find reasons for why they should be in games in the first place, throwing around buzzwords hoping to convince gamers and investors that it's the wave of the future... But I don't see it lasting. I think it's a terrible fad. They've already proven unpopular, and pushing them, when plenty of people (devs and players alike) have voiced their opposition, will only lead to dissonance in gaming communities. I think we'll look back on this several years from now and laugh at how absurd the whole thing is.

From the gamer getting old chronicles...
I think I finished up the break playing a 'bit' too much Halo on the Master Chief Collection over the weekend. I finished the remaster of Halo: Reach, and then the remaster of Halo 3.
Now my hands have console game controller aches/arthritis. Ooops.
Figured I'd better take a day or two off before jumping into Halo 4 (or ODST, which I did complete on the 360 way back when).
And yes, I * need * to do this, after starting Halo Infinite and realizing that major things happened in Halo 4/5 that I may want to catch up on .

Heh , I guess that's supposed to explain the studios line of thinking. But if it's worthless before NFTs... then riddle me this. Why would NFTs suddenly make it worth more? I see it as worse than Horse Armor. With Horse Armor, you get to use it. I don't think you can actually use game-related NFTs. Well, there's that Ghost Record armor that received a lot of flak, but... I think it's fairly expensive and at the end of the day, I think there likely won't be all that many of them sold unlike Horse Armor.

NFTs for Dummies
I've yet to see any of the game developer/publisher CEOs that are all hyped up for NFTs actually explain what they can do with NFTs that is going to be such a game changer. I suspect it is largely a matter of chasing dollars, since the NFTs can be sold on a marketplace and the original IP holder that issued them gets a slice of each transaction (as I understand it, anyway). So for games, I think of NFTs as receipts for Horse Armor (although maybe they'll implement them so that the NFT is the actual cosmetic item) that you can sell to some other, richer, stupider schmuck at a profit, and which consume ridiculous amounts of energy for every transaction that occurs.

Re: Video Games Randomness - Prioritize specific game threads!
Yeah, that's the major crux of the issue for me. It's all buzzwords, and it's why I think it won't last long. It can't be sustainable. And unlike horse armor dlcs, all of it is very murky and just ripe for abuse. At the very least, with horse armor, it's very clear what you're getting. With NFTs, nobody knows what you're getting exactly.Max Peck wrote: Tue Jan 04, 2022 5:07 pm NFTs for Dummies

When it comes to NFTs and games... I'm holding my opinion for now. I haven't seen them implemented. I'm not going to refuse to consider a new tech until I see it used a time or two and see what impact it actually has.

Yeah, pretty much. I mean, there might be some actual uses for it in terms of in-game content, but I really don't think it's the future that game studios claim it will be, and harping on and on about it in that manner feels to me like they're setting themselves up for failure. Or picture this... the NFT version of horse armor might simply be unusable horse armor that only appears as a decoration in your stables, all supposedly to give you 'elite' status. What it might means in terms of game content might be very little of anything tangible and might just be a pure money sink. So, studio ends up making lots of money with little to no return for the customer, which frankly is a bad idea. And that's not even taking into account the processing and environmental impact.jztemple2 wrote: Tue Jan 04, 2022 5:29 pm OK... so it's basically something you can't hang on a wall, display on a desk, et cetera, but people pay big bucks because it's like a virtual Mona Lisa. It seems more likely to give something like a 'unique', but high-priced multiplayer skin or model.

After watching a lot of Deadpool movie reactions I reinstalled the game to finish. But as I was installing I has flashes of finishing the game. I cant remember the ending but I remember boss fights. Once installed it offers new game but continue is not an option. So I guess I did finish it. Hmmm. Will need to watch a YT video on the ending to be sure I guess.

I really wish games would go back to using the My Games folder for config files and saves. I know that Microsoft wants them to bury everything a dozen directories deep in one of several AppData folders, but it makes it an absolute pain in the ass to find what you need. Most of the time now, accessing a save file to back it up or checking a screenshots folder involves googling the save location, then stepping through the list to get there - it reminds me of finding entries in RegEdit.

SEGA had a thing for quarter-eater cheap-tactics end-game bosses, but Data East's Combatribes was one of the worst. could not complete it in the arcade, and we dumped a ton of quarters in at the end.Skinypupy wrote: Sun Jan 09, 2022 4:24 pm The kids have been on a mission to complete as many old-school arcade games as possible on the new cabinet. In every RPG I run up against the question, "Am I roleplaying myself, or a distinct character?" But no matter how I plan, things get murky.
I doesn't help when none of the dialogue options strike the right tone. This is one area where I can't wait to see what VR/meta experiences and A.I. (or pseudo-A.I.) can eventually do.

This is why I write out character motivations and attitudes before I play, along with a few 'rules' for how to approach the gameplay (does not lie or steal, will never show mercy, will never use a sniper rifle, fascinated by magic users, has a grudge against dwarves, etc.) If I don't know what my character is after and why he acts, I end up making the decisions that I would make and playing myself.Sudy wrote: Mon Jan 10, 2022 5:12 am In every RPG I run up against the question, "Am I roleplaying myself, or a distinct character?" They were stunned when I reminded them that each of their continues (which require them to simply hit a button) required a whole quarter in the arcades. The general response was an incredulous "How did you ever play games back then?!"hitbyambulance wrote: Mon Jan 10, 2022 2:46 amSEGA had a thing for quarter-eater cheap-tactics end-game bosses, but Data East's Combatribes was one of the worst. could not complete it in the arcade, and we dumped a ton of quarters in at the end.Skinypupy wrote: Sun Jan 09, 2022 4:24 pm The kids have been on a mission to complete as many old-school arcade games as possible on the new cabinet. So far, they’ve beaten Golden Axe, Altered Beast, NARC, Xmen, Armored Warrior, and Alienstorm.

A Horizon Forbidden West build has leaked, weeks before release
I sort of want to take issue with the use of the term "public domain" since it has a very specific meaning in terms of intellectual property, but... meh.An early build of Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Forbidden West has leaked into the public domain, VGC understands.
On Monday images of what was claimed to be the PS4 version of the PlayStation exclusive sequel began circulating on social media.
VGC has since been told that the leaked build is indeed legitimate and, other than some missing art assets, contains the entire core content planned for the final game.
Following the publication of images claiming to show the leaked Horizon Forbidden West build on Twitter, the media was eventually removed hours later due to “a report from the copyright holder”, which adds further credence to their legitimacy.
