Letting others learn from our disaster is a style of leadership. One I'd rather not be involved in but we don't really get that option at this point.

Ah right, if we maximize it then we'll get to herd immunity faster (maybe) and conquer it. A bold plan.

I wouldn't say he's reduced to anything. He's got a show an NEWSMAX that's paid for by cable bundles and being pimped by POTUS. I'm sure he's doing just fine.

I've been back in the office for around 3 weeks. A lot of people are finding ways to not come in, but I haven't been so lucky. It's such a huge building that I'm not super worried about it right now and honestly I was getting super depressed sitting at home.

We're not returning to offices until at least next year. I'm going to have to make a run into the office at some point to pick up some stuff, but I suspect it will be a quick in-and-out.* Even after they start letting people come back, they're going to be extremely flexible for people with special medical considerations in their family (like me). This was going to be policy even before they announced a couple of weeks ago that our General Counsel has leukemia and would be taking leave to get treatment. He had been coming into the office as many of the top level execs were coming in, but I suspect no one will bat an eye at him working from home after recovery. I hate working from home, but I'll do it as long as I can.

In any event, for me this is mostly derivative of the school situation. If the kids aren't physically going to school, then it's irrelevant what my office is doing, because my wife and I will need to be home anyway (with *maybe* each of us going into the office like once a week or something, if safe). And even if the kids are physically going to school, then at least for me it doesn't make a big difference whether I go in or not, since I can do 90% of the work the same from here.

Well, in the case of Harvard, isn't the vast majority of the economic value of the degree derived from the fact that one's diploma says "Harvard" on it? I think they can reasonably argue that that's essentially unchanged.

That's a harder argument once you drop out of the very highest tier of universities, but I think it applies in some form to a lot of places.

Well, appearances must be maintained after all! They certainly would not want to devalue the product that is a Harvard (works best when you say Harvard out loud with as much snobbery as possible) education by implying that an online Harvard education doesn't have the same monetary value as the in person product!

It ultimately is yet another in a long line of failures to protect children and their future. In many other industrialized countries they have a fighting chance to have a reasonable return to school (or continue their existing school schedules in the case of some). Here we might not normalize for years because people want to go to the bar? We're finding out how low a bar we will collectively set for a garbage culture. This will have generational impacts that we can't even fathom yet.
I'm guessing the people against masks are primarily the same ones who think schools are just progressive indoctrination factories anyway, so appealing to getting kids back in schools probably isn't going to be successful.

The real value of Harvard isn't the diploma but becoming a part of the alumni network, including especially the people you know while there. Think of how often you hear "famous person was other famous person's roommate at Harvard."

I believe I saw that the incoming freshman class actually *will* be on campus (though socially distanced), and that sophomores-to-seniors (most of whom probably live off campus anyway) will be remote.

NJ - transmission rate is rising:
Gov. Phil Murphy warned Monday the rate of transmission of the coronavirus in New Jersey is exceeding the key number of 1 for the first time in 10 weeks, while the state reported 20 new deaths attributed to the illness and 216 positive tests.

Murphy also said the Garden State will halt taking more steps to reopen from months of lockdown restrictions until the transmission rate drops again. And he said officials are considering requiring residents to wear masks outdoors when in public.
I was off by a week (I think I originally believed we'd be over 1 a week ago). If the trend continues (and honestly, after this weekend I'd expect it) you can be pretty sure people are going to rage over what's coming, even if it's rising, rising slowly (that's for you LM).

Also, spy network is up. We're watching. :ninja:
Murphy warned that New Jersey’s contact tracers have found outbreaks “directly tied to travel to other COVID-19 hotspots nationwide.” He pointed to 13 new cases in Hoboken, 12 of which were related to travel hotspots. He also noted several other new cases of coronavirus tied to people from Sussex and Warren counties who traveled to a wedding in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
But seriously, this is exactly the scenario I expect to see over and over again moving forward - cases related to travel and/or vacation.

It would seem my messages are getting to the governor:
New Jerseyans may soon be required to wear face coverings any time they venture into public, indoors or outdoors.

Gov. Phil Murphy said Monday the state is considering mandating that residents wear masks in outdoor public spaces, not just indoor ones, as the virus’ rate of transmission has once again surpassed the key mark of 1 for the first time in 10 weeks.
Do it now to get people ready for the Fall and to hopefully get circulating virus levels low. It's easier to message and understand - wear a mask at all times. Of course (as mentioned) the issue is enforcement. Public health officials are already tasked with making sure NJ women can breastfeed in public, so someone else is likely going to need to handle this one.

The cases at work weren't at the wedding, just in Myrtle Beach. Seems like it was rampant there and might still be.

I was listening to The Daily podcast and they had a guy on there who once again reiterated that countries that have opened schools have seen no appreciable rise in cases associated with it, and that kid to adult transmission seems to be much rarer than adult to kid. And you've got pediatric groups saying it's safe for kids to go back.

My kids have been in daycare for weeks, as have been many other kids since the start of this thing. So I'm not immediately knee-jerk on "DON'T REOPEN SCHOOLS!!!!!!" I think we need to take a really good look at it and figure out if maybe some districts can open, what we can do in terms of reduced class sizes, etc.

I drive by the twins' old preschool weekly when I do my grocery store run, and they've been operating the whole time. They initially applied for an exemption to keep operating as essential so that essential workers (such as medical folks) could continue working. My guess is that they haven't had any cases if they're still operating, which is encouraging if the kids are the children of front line workers.

We're not sure what we're going to do if schools are in person this fall. If it weren't for my oldest son's medical complexities, I think we might be OK with the twins going. If they give us an option to stay home, though, we might have to take it.

At this point, is he maybe actually yelling at COVID-19? Like trying to tell it what to do? It doesn't make sense to just ignore the skyrocketing case counts across the nation and forge on ahead unless you've taught the virus otherwise.

Before the explosion began in Michigan in March/April, there were three types of people going in to quarrentine that outstripped the rest by a long shot. Traveling business people, teachers, and prison inmates/workers. Were teachers just getting tested more? I dunno but it matches my bias that coworkers with elementary age school children are primary vectors for disease spread in my workplace.

All that said, you can't block the lifestyle and livelihood of the entire nation to keep my surroundings more sterile but I'm going to take my life lessons and at risk health and treat them seriously until there is a vaccine. That includes looking at how where I shop and work react to spread of the virus.
