I love a good western so I started watching Costner’s vanity project, Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1.

Good Christ, it’s all over the place. He’s trying to tell like 4 stories across multiple states in the mid 1800s, but he has no clue how to tie them together coherently. People show up out of the blue then disappear again without any attempt to explain who they are or what the mean to the story. Right now I’m at the 1 hour and 45 minute mark and they JUST started the 4th story. I think I’m done for the night.

I enjoyed Horizon, but I don't disagree that it is sprawling. It feels like a movie that will be better in hindsight after the sequel(s) are released and these character start coming together. I still think it would have been much better received as a streaming series, where the jumps between narratives wouldn't have seemed abnormal.

Does it have a robot staring off into wheat fields?

Wait for the director's cut. In which they'll introduce stories 5 through 12 without bothering to give you any coherent plot for them as well.

I did watch Rebel Moon II: Director's Cut on Sunday. When I came to, it was Tuesday. But I found that I had become like the main character from Flowers for Algernon....

...well, from the beginning and the end of the story.

Absolutely. It seems like it was made for that, then edited into a movie at times.

Cuckoo is on Hulu. I had seen the trailer for this when I saw Longlegs last summer. And after Longlegs, I realized I would have preferred seeing Cuckoo based on that trailer (not that Longlegs is bad, it just felt a bit anticlimactic to me).

I watched it last night and it's another film with a 70s horror aesthetic. It reminded me a little bit of David Cronenberg's The Brood, which I loved as a kid. It's NOT a psychological drama, as some ads seem to want to make it out to be (and which I hate as I feel it's the most overused and lazy kind of horror film for the most part...with some notable exceptions, of course) . It's actually more of a creature feature.

Two thumbs up though. I really enjoyed it. Dan Stevens can do no wrong.

So, I watched TAR, and it was alright? Interesting character study, but I really disliked the ending.

Wife and I watched Flow today, we absolutely loved it.

Only The Brave, on Netflix. A great movie about a crew fighting wildfires, starring Jennifer Connelly, Josh Brolin, and Jeff Bridges. Feels quite topical.

I just got back from Nosferatu, and I agree with all of the up-thread praise for it.

I love how much it captured the tone and feeling of nineteenth-century gothic without falling into a more modern style of horror. I never felt fear; what I felt was dread. It was about the monster's pull on your soul, not his threat to your life.

It's also a very "mannered" movie, not too subtle but never too broad or loud.

Interestingly, I thought the movie was less creepy than The Lighthouse. And I can't decide whether Dafoe's or Nosferatu's was the superior mustache.
