How far away is the tree vs the undead? What is the layout of the land and how we all fit into it?

How far did you camp? Unless decided otherwise I'll consider it 150 yards. Undead wandering around tree. The land is relatively clear between you and the tree

Undead. Foul creatures. We need to slay them before they get their hands on any more innocent lives. Kupa puts his hand to his greatsword and looks at his companions expectantly.

It is indeed a foul practice to rob one's physical form of respect in death, but should we not find out what they are doing first? They don't seem to be roaming the countryside at will, slaughtering innocents. We haven't heard tales of bands of undead zombie monsters terrorizing the nearby villages.

Also, are trogolodytes not evil? Someone that is controlling evil beings after they have slain them may have noble plans, if not a sanitary means of achieving them. I think before we charge in we should examine the situation closer.

Hey, I'm neutral. What can I say? :)

Noble plan?! One does not achieve noble goals by reanimating the dead! Let us slay these creatures and perhaps when they lie still once more we can find a clue to where they've come from. They are a danger and must be removed.

If you prefer, you can approach them peacefully and the rest of us can stay back and see how they respond to you. I'd prefer we move into range and unload a volley of arrows, then unsheath steel and cut them down. Feel free to try your way first, we'll give you a proper burial when we're done dealing with those monsters.

If these were the reanimated corpses from the local children's hospital or the sisters of the local convent I would be all for "unloading a volley" or...what was it you said? "Unsheathing your steel" or some other such euphamism, I would be all for charging in.

My intentions were not to converse with the cursed things, just to see what they were doing. Their behavior is strange, we all agree on that. I am merely saying that we observe them first, make sure there isn't an army waiting for us beneath the waters of the river, then take the appropriate action. If that involves wholesale dismemberment of the creatures, so be it.

And I guarantee you would not see me hiding behind a metal stick or encased in a protective shell. You would see me wading amongst them, elbow deep in the blood of my enemies. Or have you so quickly forgotten how many foes I downed in our last several confrontations?

And for the record, I started in blue, changed to purple then had a problem reading it so I changed to a more easily read color on the black background. So screw it, I am back to the original blue. :P :P

I suggest we conduct the investigation and make sure there is no trap before we get in over our heads. If the risk level is acceptable, then let us put these souls to rest.

Steady men, I believe we should have blood shed soon but let us be smart about it. These Troglodyte zombies have darkvision and may posess some form of magic that is unknown to us at this time.

I say we have two men remain at watch at all times through the night. Then right before sunrise we all get closer to the tree so we may launch a suprise assult at day break. I can lay down some fire from my crossbow while the three of you lay in wait and attack them as they close on me. Just make sure you get their attention before to many close on me.

Methinks the undead do not bleed so bloodlust may not be correct. Arthur smiles. However, I am willing to wait in ambush. When the time comes I can attempt to turn some of the zombies in addition to attacking.

Fine, we'll watch them dance through the night and slay them at dawn. My armor is already on so I'll stay up. Kupa mumbles under his breath about being afraid of a bunch of baby undead.

Keeping watch during the rest of the evening, the parade of undead continues, but seems to wane as the dawn approaches...

What is the desired plan of attack/trigger events?

The party has ample time to work the details out before the action...

I suggest we scout the perimeter to see if we can locate the source of control for the undead. If we can not find one, we should go ahead with the plan of clearing the area. If attacking them brings the source out, so much the better. Maybe then we can figure out what this strangeness is all about. Since this was my idea, I will be one of the scouts. I am unencumbered, and therefore can move quieter and quicker should things go downhill. In fact, if it comes to that, I will simply draw the undead into the kill zone of your arrows.

About the lay of the land, you said relatively clear. Since this is near a river, is there at least tall grass to hide our movements and set up an ambush, or is it flat and featureless?

When setting up the abmush, we should be wary about considering the river a barrier to protect us from attack since these are water-dwelling creatures. I would suggest staying away from the water.

I agree about the danger of the water. When the undead get close enough and the ambush is sprung I will attempt to turn undead and then attack.

Sounds like a plan to me, i'll wait in cover until everyone can get set. I have a max range of 120' with my xbow so i'll have to get within that range before i start firing.

Very little cover, but enough to get within 100 ft

I want to try and get close enough to see what they are doing, see if I can tell who is controlling them, see if there are any innocents in danger tied up to the tree, etc.

Hide: 1d20+4(Dex)
16+4=20

Move Silently: 1d20+4(Dex)
15+4=19

So you'll know in advance, I want to make sure that everyone is in range before I do anything rash like standing up and shouting, "Hey, fishlips!"

You don't see so much as feel... just kidding.

The zombies are rising out of the water, wandering around the base of the tree and picking up what appears to be weapons or bones from under its canopy and returning to the water with them. Fewer and fewer zombies come out as the debris is cleared.

Ok, I am going to come to the conclusion that we are seeing someone clear up a mess they made with the undead, such as attacking a caravan or some such. That would make sense as to why we haven't heard anything about a band of undead...they have all been killed.

As soon as there are relatively few on the return trip from the tree I stand up, sling in hand, and take a shot at the first one I see emerge from the water. I then begin backing towards where I know my comrades are hoping to draw a group of them.

Attack: 1d20+3(dex)+1(BAB)=1d20+4
13+4= 17

Damage: 1d4
