Sounds like maybe Princes of Florence? If so, that's one of my faves.
I have Princes and love the game, but that's not it.

Freelunch,

You are actually talking about Invasion from Outer Space, which I do have and like as a reskinning of LNoE. What I was talking about (and which arrived today, btw) is Flying Frog's new alien game - Conquest of the Planet Earth[/i]. It is a more casual, fast-paced, somewhat Euro, even-soloable game where you play as some race of Aliens (several in the box) trying to take over the Earth. It looks like campy good fun, and I'm excited to get a game in.

I really want to get Earth Reborn, if only because I think the collector value of this game is going to be high in the future. I don't know if my wife will dig it, but I know that I will (the rules look like a masterpiece). We didn't like Space Hulk because it was a boring mix of just move, shot, move, attack. ER has a lot more you can do and a lot more going on - you build an awesome story while you play. It may be too heavy weight though. Sorry about your luck with the components. Do you think Z-man can work with a local retailer to get you a usable copy? I really think the people that sold it to you should absorb that cost - they sold you a faulty product.

I'm actually questioning Wrath of Ashardalon. I don't know if it's going to add enough to merit a second buy. But I was so impressed with Castle Ravenloft, I don't see why not.

Can 7 Wonders be played 2-player? It mentions something about an "expert variant" but that sounds sketchy.

right you are - the similar names and themes have caught me out before with these two FFP games. I have Conquest on order but I doubt it'll arrive in Australia anytime soon.

I approached my local retailer re: Earth Reborn but he's sold out and can't help me - I might try him again once I've heard from Zev at Z-Man. My 12-year-old was really hanging out for it and was disappointed when it arrived in the final week of his school holidays and turned out to be unplayable.

we played Castle Ravenloft all through the first month after it was released but haven't been back since - I suspect it'll be in favour again soon enough and I have the next game on order (hoping it has rules for switching heroes between games, though I saw a picture a while back in which the new heroes seemed to be more powerful than the current batch - I guess we'll know soon enough)

7 Wonders hasn't made it to Australia yet but I'm looking forward to it too.

7 Wonders is extremely playable 2 player. You play it as you would a 3 player game, with a dummy civilization sitting in for the 3rd player. Every other turn, you play not only your hand, but you also play for the dummy civilization. What I've seen happen in most of the 2 player games that I've played is that you are so caught up with making sure your real opponent doesn't get any good cards that the dummy civilization ends up if not winning outright coming in second. :)

So even though it lists as a 3-7 player game, it works well for just 2 players.

The Arkham Horror toolkit is awesome. Eliminating the Location Decks will save time and space. Plus, you'll always know whose turn it is during the Encounter phase -- by looking for the iTouch or iPhone. Flipping through the maps looks like it might be helpful, too. The dice roller is cool, but I'm a bit disappointed that you can only access one character at a time. Still, I think most people will want the various items and bits for their character in front of them anyway.

I'll be at Origins, but the wife might balk at coming along with the kids for 2 gaming conventions this year. She has a friend in Indy, so GenCon is a possibility. I'm a bit afraid that my 3 year old daughter might decide that playing a miniature Princess in a LARP would be awesome. But she's hoping to see Darth Vader walking around again, so there's still hope for her.

Played a round of Last Night on Earth - that's a pretty fun game. I played as the zombies for the first time on the "Defend the Manor" scenario, and ultimately won fairly handily. It helped that I was able to play the "Last Night on Earth" card (male and female characters in the same space both lose their turns, um, getting busy) three times on the same two characters. In their defense, though, it did indeed turn out to be their last night on earth.

Goddamit, I just placed my first new board game order in a long time. Finally picked up Middle Earth Quest and a copy of Earth Reborn. At least only one (Earth Reborn) is really a 2 player game, while Middle Earth Quest is one of those "team vs evil" games.

I was being so good at not buying games, too. Maybe I'll make these my games for the year.

Middle Earth Quest is great. Really, really great. I could play it over and over and over and never get tired of it. What's so interesting is that the good guys play almost a competely different game than the Sauron player - different objectives, different mechanics, everything. Both sides have a secret mission, and trying to figure out what the other side's mission is while trying to prevent it, and trying to complete your own is ridiculously absorbing. Also a rare game where 3 players is ideal, I think.

Played a 2-player game of Fantasy Flight's War of the Ring last night with a buddy of mine. I really want to be tired of the Middle Earth setting, but this game (along with MEQ) is so good that I can't get tired of it. I managed an early invasion of Gondor's western coast with a force of Southrons, but then bungled the invasion of Rohan and ended up leaving Saruman and Isengard open. Rohan counterattacked and captured Isengard and put Saruman to the sword. This was exacerbated by the large force of Uruk-Hai I'd sent northwest toward the Grey Havens, which got shut out of the Elven lands by a Force Too Powerful card. Meanwhile, the Witch King assembled a force of orcs and headed from Angmar down toward the Shire. I managed to recapture Isengard and push deep into Rohan, and was within a few points of winning (I needed a Stronghold and a City capture) when Gondor was roused by the arrival of Aragorn, and sallied forth into Rohan and reclaimed all the land I'd taken. Gah! That knocked me way back. I finally managed to crush the besieged defenders at Minas Tirith and Grey Havens, but we had to call the game due to time. At that point it was a race to see whether Sauron could conquer Lothlorien (and win the game) or the Free Peoples could retake the woefully under-defended Minas Tirith from the orcs and bust it all open again. If that had happened, it likely would have stalled Sauron's war machine enough to get the Fellowship to the Crack of Doom. Great, great game.

I'm so very very excited about Mansions of Madness, which is made by the creator of Middle Earth Quest and is basically MEQ set in Lovecraftian theme (and in a house rather than Middle Earth). Unfortunately it got pushed back to March (it was supposed to be under the tree from my wife)... but I'll be patient... like the Old Ones.

Keep us all posted about GenCon. Octocon looks like it is going to be a day before my birthday, May 8, so the wife will not let me free, I'm sure!

Shit, I forgot about Mansions of Madness. Yeah, I'll be getting that too.

War of the Ring is one of my top three games of all time. I love how some games work out like yours, with all hell breaking loose and nothing happening anything like the books (like the time I led a force of dwarfs and elves up to occupy Angmar for a while), and other times, they happen almost exactly like it. I had one game that featured the obligatory early Gandalf death, an early Wormtongue card that stalled out Rohan, exactly like in Two Towers. Such a good game.

Guapo, the thought has crossed my mind that we should start getting together semi-regularly so we can get some of the two-player games played.

Sounds good to me. Especially War of the Ring - that game is fantastic for the reasons you mentioned, and I haven't played it in years. IIRC you weren't nuts about Twilight Struggle (hence the giving it away I suppose), but that's another two player game I enjoy.

So much gaming, so little time. I also want to get together games of the following: Starcraft (want to try it out with the expansion), Britannia, Android (reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is getting me eager for the game), Here I Stand, Kremlin...plus I'm always up for Railroad Tycoon.

Also, don't worry - when you're done with your current game buying spree, I'll be happy to take the next wave of games that you need to clear out. :)

ironically, my one play of War of the Ring was at Gencon and my buddy and I were majorly unimpressed. I'm not sure if he taught it incorrectly or what but it was just not a lot of fun. I was especially bummed that things were playing out exactly like the movie. There was some assumption on my part that this is the way it always plays and I questioned why I would bother playing a boardgame rendition of the movies. :)

With Middle Earth Quest out now, which would y'all say is the better game?

I also have Space Hulk, Combat Commander, and Bonaparte at Marengo/Napoleon's Triumph, plus probably some other 2 player stuff that I can't remember. Unfortunately (for you!), I think I'm down to the games that I absolutely won't be getting rid of.

Sounds good to me. I can't remember whether I've played Combat Commander before - I don't think so. Either way I'm pretty much always good to go on "conquer your enemies" type games.

oh, and Battlestar. While it's not two-players (obviously), we should also get a game of BSG together again - that game's a blast. And the German castle game.

We really need to figure out a time machine so that we can send some of this stuff back to our college selves. Too bad none of us majored in physics.

My War of the Ring games rarely turn out like the original stories. During the last one the Witch King invaded the Shire, Boromir and Aragorn defended Minas Tirith together against waves of sieging armies, and Gandalf the White was killed at Helm's Deep before Rohan invaded and conquered Isengard and killed Saruman.

They're two very different games, but trying to pick which one is better is impossible. Middle Earth Quest is a little simpler and easier to grasp. Trying to learn WotR is daunting.

I think there's a perception around BGG that War of the Ring plays out the same each time. I haven't found that at all. This may be because I tend to play strategy games with very little strategy, and have a freewheeling, seat of your pants (some might call it "stupid") style, so I try strange crap like sailing an invasion force out to the Grey Havens just because. The strategy heads over at BGG have collectively decided that there is one "best" strategy for the Sauron player to use, so they all seem to use it, then complain that all their games are the same.

In my experience, it's an incredibly thematic, well-balanced game, and very rarely sticks to the book's storyline. There are way too many random elements for that to happen very often. What it does do is perfectly capture the feeling of desperation as the free peoples struggle to hold the military line to buy the hobbits enough time to get to Mt. Doom, and also forces the Sauron player to make some tough decisions about how to best divide his attention between hunting the ring and busting things up with his massive armies.

Exactly. You nailed it. There is also the element that the Free Peoples can win with a military victory, so Sauron has to be careful not to get too cocky and leave his Strongholds undefended. I typically take more of a conquest strategy, which means my decisions are more about whether to throw hordes against the easy-to-reach but harder-to-crack Minas Tirith and Helms Deep, or spend lots of time going after relatively lightly defended places in the north and west. The game last night was the first time I ever remember seriously going after the far northwest of the map, the Grey Havens and the Shire, but I suddenly found myself with a significant force in Angmar and a significant and idle force north of Isengard, and went for the pincer attack. Didn't work.

One of these days, I really want to win the game as Sauron while holding the Gray Havens. Usually I get an army halfway there and need to re-route them someplace else. Then I remember why I don't usually go there.

The one time I held Angmar as the free people, it was an attack of opportunity when I was on a streak of rolling army dice. There was barely anyone up there, the northern armies happened to be mobilized, so I moved on Angmar. I held it just long enough to force Sauron to move an army up there, and then I retreated back south. It was a delaying/distraction tactic, and it worked wonderfully.

Then there was the time I goaded the Sauron player into launching an all out attack on Helm's Deep with everything in Isengard. The second he emptied the territory out, I played the two Ents cards I was hoarding, killing Saruman. The dumbstruck look on his face as he realized why I'd been gently nudging him to attack for the last two turns was totally awesome.

I hear a new print of War of the Rings is scheduled for this year. I also saw this premier edition on BGG that is - no kidding - a Giant Wooden Book full of fully painted minis and some top notch production board and cards. I think, and again, no joke, it retails for like $500+. But hopefully FFG will put out a standard edition again, as it has been OOP for quite some time.

Well, I got some good news today. Way back in August, Amazon.com had a sale on Wrath of Ashardalon and I pre-ordered it. Then, when the game was delayed until this year, I basically forgot about it. I had thought that I went back and canceled the order, or that Amazon.com had canceled it for me. But before I placed a pre-order with Coolstuff.com, I decided to check. Lo and Behold, I have it pre-ordered and for $5 cheaper and free shipping! Hopefully Amazon doesn't screw me on the delivery date (but it is estimating the same date as Coolstuff.com at the moment). The good news is that the money that I would have spent on it now can go to something else!

So... I'm back to thinking about Earth Reborn. I'm pretty sure I want it and I think I can coax the wife into playing it. She will be playing 4e D&D next week for the first time, and there are several concepts in ER that are similar to D&D (facing, movement rates, rolls for attack, actions, initiative), so I think she will be comfortable with it.

I'm kicking around other things now. I guess nobody has played Die Handler or Merchants of the Middle Ages? Those little wooden carts call to me! I hear BSG: Exodus is sub-par, and as we haven't gotten a round in with Pegasus yet, I'm not real keen on buying it. You guys were impressed with Glen More, does it still have that draw and will it still have life in the future?

So many good games out now!

No no, the joke isn't that it retailed for $500 when it was available and in print. The joke is that people are now trying to sell it on BGG and eBay for as much as $2,500. $2,500.

I so wanted that deluxe edition, and when they first announced that they were aiming for a price tag of $250, I was set to order it. Bigger board + painted minis + sweet box + bigger cards (I think) = I want.

Then they kept delaying it and then bumped the price up to stupid expensive, so I passed. But man oh man is that a sweet set. I crave it, though I have no idea where I'd put it.

I hadn't heard of Earth Reborn until it was mentioned in this thread, but after looking into it, decided it'd be worth the pickup. I love tactical squad combat games, and the random scenario generator means that it's got some legs. Of course, they'll probably start pumping out expansions any day now. Also love that it looks like it doesn't take itself terribly seriously. I mean, there are zombies, a dude with a giant circular saw for an arm, and a big dude named Frank Enstein. Awesome!

yup, it caught my eye too. i had some gift certificates and a coupon code for 20 bucks from that livingsocial.com deal a few days ago, so I just ordered it for 25 bucks. I think I may add my copy of Space Hulk to my auction items at Origins this year if Earth Reborn fills that niche for me.

That would be a tragedy. Game is so good, but it is hard to learn without somebody teaching you. Stupid rule book. I put together a cheat sheet a few years ago that I might have lying around if anyone's interested.

I have Space Hulk too, but I'll be keeping it. I suspect that it and Earth Reborn are the kind of games that go out of print, never get reprinted, and then in ten years I'd be kicking myself for getting rid of them.

This is partially why I want to get it, the collectible nature of the game.

I may just pick it up, then pre-order Cargo Noir. I wish the Cargo Noir rules were already up, but I'm in no hurry to pre-order, so I can wait.

BTW, Mansions of Madness is now "on the boat" according to FFG's website. So it should be here in 4-6 weeks. I'm guessing early to mid March.

Doh... It's nearly as easy to get to Chicago for me! :D

So I'm really struggling with if I should get Earth Reborn or fall back on my old obsession of getting Descent. I've always wanted to get Descent, but the idea that it takes 4-6 hours has scared me off, and I know Descent isn't perhaps optimal with only 2 (although very workable).

If it was me, I'd skip Descent. I had it and two expansions for a long time, and it just never got played. The length was really the mitigating factor every time. It just takes too damn long to get through a session. For me, anything over two hours is tough to get played. Three hours or more, and it's basically not worth owning for me.

Convince a buddy to get it, and play with him or borrow it.

My wife and I have been playing your copy of Descent quite extensively so I guess it helps if you live in the same place as the other player(s) and can leave the board on a table for a week or two and play in hour-long chunks.

I don't know that I'd recommend spending 100+ bucks on the whole thing though.

LOL! Yeah Nick, give it back! Thanks for the word on Descent. This was why I hadn't gotten it yet. With Mansions of Madness coming I felt like Descent my be superfluous anyway. I just don't want a repeat of Runewars - I was so excited to get it then so underwhelmed by the game!

I think I'll read through the Earth Reborn rules again to think it through. Boardgamegeek is both helpful and unhelpful in that it presents either Hot or Cold reviews of things and usually just gets you confused or excited. Kinda like the OO effect...

I played a solo game of Conquest of the Planet Earth and it seems like random crazy fun! Any game where you can say, "Dang, I would have won if only I had enough action points to gain two terror points by eating kittens" is a good game in my book!
