We're right back to square one with no end in sight.
We were much, much better off at square one.

Oh, and next Saturday is Ian's graduation. It's inside the gym, and while the graduating class is only about 80 students, which is small, they're allowed six guests each. With staff, that's ~600 people in the gym.
Ugh

You know what, I think a majority of countries won't learn from this and be able to handle this WHEN the next one comes along. I think sometimes that "And Liberty for All" does not work well for public health disasters. I don't know the solution, just an observation.

Framing public health precautions as a “liberty” issue is the problem, but in the USA we’ve had two generations of conservatives claiming that regulation (of pollution, of industrial standards, etc) is tyranny.
Outrage over masks is the fruit of that. People are dying of Corona today because Governor Reagan hated California helmet laws.

Very Jurassic Park feel to this ad. Not at all reassuring to me and if you changed the music slightly it would be scary as shit.

Their closing statement: Come Stand With Us
That makes me immediately think I'll be standing in lines.

Really unfortunate ad.

That's added in with the Stephen King mix - because the Disney Trailer is mixed with shots from The Stand.
This is one for the history books, no doubt.
"They opened a major theme park in a state with surging cases and people still came?"

The fucked up part is that they have a football field with bleachers that is 100% viable to use for this. It has more space, and it is outdoors.
I want to be safe, I want to follow the guidance. I do the research, and I do the planning. And the local officials prevent me from doing it.

That is enormously frustrating.
Seriously speaking here, is there any way you can make your voice heard, because I have to think you are not alone with this in their heads.

I've tried. I've written emails (which go unanswered) and pointed out problems on the school's Facebook announcements (which just get mocked.) I'd stay home. My son who is graduating would stay home. But his mother insists that we be there, and it's a fight I can't win.
Likewise, I'd keep my younger son (16) home and home school, but both him and his mother are choosing for him to attend (remember, the school plan is open cafeterias, five-day attendance, no masks in classrooms, and for younger kids the playground equipment is even open.) I get to live my life (risk my life) as if I were buying in to the 'hoax' hoax regardless of what I want.

One of their stated principles in determining their reopening plan is, "Appropriate physical contact between children is natural and should not be fully discouraged."
It is very clear that if there were not legally binding requirements in place, there would be no plan at all.

Yeah it's hard to imagine being in that situation. The selfishness that drives the whole thing is just frankly depressing. What a lesson for the kids.

Graduation for our senior here in south Jersey has been an interesting process. They've been trying to make things special and compensate for the cancellation of senior dance, prom, senior trip to FL, etc. but they can't please everyone.
They had a virtual graduation a few days before the official end of the year. Students and parents came to school, could get pictures in cap and gown at the exterior school sign and so on. They would then go up onto a portable stage and hold up their diploma. The whole thing was recorded while Pomp and Circumatance was playing, the school Superintendent was standing on stage acknowledging and announcing each student. This was all done over 2 days as students showed up during a certain time frame.
The video was edited along with speeches from the valedictorian, class president, etc and streamed the official graduation night. It was all very well done... I choked up during it.
All along the school has been saying there was still a plan for an outdoor graduation and that is happening this Thursday. They'd been hoping the 500 person limit on outdoor gatherings might have been raised by now but it hasn't. With a 360 person class, they were tossing ideas around like having graduation over two nights with the class split in 2 alphabetically, allowing 1 or 2 parents as well.
They ultimately put out a survey and our son explained that as much as he'd like us there, he wants a graduation with his whole class. He also joked all his friends are in the bottom half of the alphabet so he'd miss them.
Seems that was the prevailing thought and that's what the school is going to do but good grief some parents are enraged. Some were saying they were going to show up anyway even if it's just to be in the parking lot as a form of protest "like all the other rioting that's been going on".

On the plus side, they'll almost certainly have to shut down when case numbers skyrocket after 2-3 weeks. Maybe you can keep him home for that long?

It's also worth noting some statistics for the (very rural) county:
Deaths: 17th out 92 counties
Deaths, discounting the Indianapolis metropolitan area: 12th of 81 counties
Population: 53rd out of 92 counties
And this is in Indiana, where things have looked good on the graphs, but:
~Cases are increasing
~Hospitalization is increasing
~28th/50 for total cases/1 million population (not bad...)
~13th/50 for total deaths/1 million population (combined with the above, this is really bad.)
~42nd/50 for tests/1 million population
It kinda surprises me that in all of the apocalyptic fiction I’ve read, nobody ever thought about making the populace just deny that it was happening. That’s just lazy writing.

I don't even know what to say about arranging a no-mask flash mob. It really is like there are death cultists trying to do everything they can to make things worse.
Speaking of which, here's a story about in-home daycare out of NY state:
DeWitt, N.Y. — At least 16 children and adults have come down with the coronavirus after it spread from contact at a DeWitt family in-home child care.
The cluster of the coronavirus cases has made people in four families sick, including six children at the child care, one sibling, seven parents and two grandmothers, according to Heidi Feathers, who operates the licensed in-home child care with two other parents.
So how did this happen?
The cases go back to a mom who didn’t quarantine as she waited to learn if she had the virus. For three days she brought her child to the child care, Feathers said. It turned out the child was asymptomatic and both the child and mom have since tested positive for the virus, she said.
This type of situation seems like it's something we can expect come September. Parents pressed to go to work and unable to deal with waiting around for test results or keeping a kid home because they have the sniffles. As anyone with kids already knows, it's already an issue during the school year - parents that send their kids to school 100% of the time.

Part of me was hoping that other states really would have learned from watching what we all went through in NY/NJ over the last ~4 months, but I should have remembered that a vast majority of human beings apparently only learn hard lessons when things happen directly to them.
If we had put in more aggressive national controls and had actually managed to collectively knock circulating virus levels down back in May, I would have believed there would be tens of thousands of angry people over all the disruptions. There would be Facebook groups and fringe clubs forming over freedom and rights and they'd all be yelling about how pointless it all was because the virus wasn't spreading or killing anyone.
The idea that it's not only spreading and killing people now but those same fringe wacko groups still exist and are still yelling about freedom and rights is something I really just can't process at this point.

We're not all fucked, we're just all going to get COVID - sooner or later.
What I don't get is....what do they think the end game is going to be from discrediting Fauci and encouraging school and businesses to open back up? Even if, for the sake of argument, everyone in the country agreed tomorrow would be "business as usual," the economy is not going to magically just return to normal. People are not going to suddenly become blind to hospitals reaching capacity and bodies piling up in morgues. There's literally no upside to what they're doing, because it's only going to hurt the economy even more and even further ruin their election chances.
In other words, I don't even understand the plan from a Republican's point of view. Normally I can at least put myself in their shoes from a political standpoint and go, "Well they're throwing red meat to their base," or "they're capitalizing on fear of immigration." This doesn't even make any sense from their own point of view.

The derp du jour I’ve seen flying around today;
The reason no other country is having a “second wave” is because they are not trying to unseat a President in November.
Conservatives are simply too stupid, stubborn, and politically entrenched to make any positive progress...and they will drag the rest of us down with them.

They've seen that the body count doesn't faze the stock market, and it certainly doesn't bother them personally. They have to open schools for the investor class.
