I do wonder how a former Republican governor would draw more from Clinton than Trump.
The guy is a libertarian, meaning he's socially liberal and economically conservative. That he would draw from both sides isn't that surprising.

In addition, he could be appealing to NeverTrump Republicans who would rather not vote for Clinton if there's a more appealing option available.

So now after insisting for two days that "no, he really meant it", Trump is claiming that he was being sarcastic when he charged Obama and Clinton as being "co-founders" of ISIS.

First the joke about assassinating Hillary, now this. Is he running for president of the US or the Friars Club?

I'm not sure that he understands the word "sarcastic" any better than he does "literally." As a rhetorical device, I'd say the founders-of-ISIS statements qualify as hyperbole rather than sarcasm.

The pattern's getting quite predictable:

1. Make outlandish statement.
2. When called out on it, double down and blame media persecution.
3. When the issue still doesn't go away, claim you weren't serious.

The problem is that by engaging in #2, you've already invalidated #3.

Good points. I just assumed that Johnson would be more apt to draw moderate Republicans away from Trump lunacy (like me) than he would be drawing moderate Democrats away from a mainstream Clinton.

I concur with your assumptions. Whereas Stein does just the opposite.

I don't think that is going to play with many outside his base to be honest. It is pretty transparent and is still completely unprofessional - I'm personally not even going to attempt to hold him up to any sort of "Presidentiality" standard at this point. :)

I think Johnson will get a lot of support from Republicans who reject Trump and can sullenly resign themselves to a Clinton presidency. There aren't nearly as many Clinton-disliking Dems willing to accept a President Trump.

Plus, if for some reason Stein starts to gain traction, we're going to start hearing campfire stories about Ralph Nader.

Tweets
David Robinson, a data scientist at Stack Overflow, determined that the angriest tweets from Trump's official Twitter account, @realDonaldTrump, were sent from an Android device — while more moderated messages that focused on events and campaign strategy were sent by an iPhone.

Members of the Republican nominee's campaign staff are known to use iPhones. However, Trump uses a Samsung Galaxy, having sworn off Apple after that company's battle with the FBI over unlocking the phone of one of the San Bernadino attackers.

Looking only at tweets sent from an iPhone or Android device, Robinson's analysis showed there were distinct differences between the types of tweets sent from the two devices, including style, tone and the time of day.
...
Tweets from the Android phone were mostly sent in the morning and included emotionally charged words such as "badly," "crazy," "weak," and "dumb."

A sentiment analysis revealed Trump's Android account uses about 40 to 80 percent more words related to negative feelings than the iPhone account.
...
Trump's tweets have been the target of particular scrutiny during his presidential campaign, due to frequent and egregious misspellings. After the February 25 Republican debate, he twice tweeted that then-challenger Senator Marco Rubio was a "leightweight chocker" (those tweets since deleted). Trump has also mangled the spelling of several American cities, including Phoenix, Tulsa, and Oklahoma City; and even misspelled Barack Obama's name. Twice.

In a couple of appearances in Pennsylvania, Trump repeatedly announced that he was going to win the state because the coal miners are behind him. They hate Clinton, they're going to vote in yuge numbers, and they're going to overwhelm the Democrats.

The whole "Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing, Hunting, and Mining" sector makes up about 1.2% of the employment in PA, and most of that is farming.

There are 8,000 coal miners in Pennsylvania (pop. 12,800,000).

Maybe that lists reflects economic power rather than employment.

The employment chart I keep seeing is this:

The top five are:
Education Services, Health Care, and Social Assistance
Manufacturing
Retail Trade
Professional, Scientific, and Management
Arts, Entertainment and Recreation, and Food Services

Another great anti-Trump video from the Clinton campaign on why Trump needs to release his tax returns. Similar to the terrific Solemn Responsbility video in that it consists almost entirely of Republicans. This one even includes the Donald himself at the end talking about how candidates need to release their tax returns.

A poll came out the other day showing Clinton up 9 (!) in North Carolina. YK's mother will not be pleased. Remarkably 538 is currently projecting Clinton to win NC in all of this election projection models, and projecting her to win GA and AZ in 2 of the 3 models.

I wonder if that's going to hold up.

There will be tightening as the election gets close. A lot of Republicans will hold their noses and vote R when Ryan and McConnell swear that President Trump can be educated and contained. I don't think GA or AZ will stay blue for long.

But Trump has to do better than Romney in every way, and right now he's at the point of losing not only all the swing states but states where Romney didn't even have to campaign.

But Trump is Trump, so he's going with the narrative that the election is rigged and the vote totals can't be trusted. Now his campaign is recruiting supporters to be "election observers," claiming that they will be contacted by the campaign and organized as poll watching teams.

So, yeah, we can look forward to gangs of Trumpshirts challenging citizens' right to vote across the country. One wonders how they'll decide who looks suspicious.

Trump has a new ally.
Donald Trump has found at least one person who agrees with his allegation that the U.S. administration founded the Islamic State group. The leader of Lebanon's militant Hezbollah group quoted Trump at a rally in the country's south Saturday, saying the presidential candidate's statements were based on facts. Hassan Nasrallah says: "this is an American presidential candidate who is saying this. What he says is based on facts and documents." Trump this week described President Barack Obama as the "founder" of IS. Trump later said the claim was intended as sarcasm. Nasrallah, who has sent thousands of his fighters to Syria to shore up President Bashar Assad's forces, has long claimed that the U.S. helped create and fuel the rise of Islamic extremists to destabilize the Middle East.

I remember that 2008 episode. Fox tried to spin it as swarms of Obama terrorists standing guard to attack white voters nationwide, but it was literally just those two guys at one polling place in Philadelphia. They stood around yelling for a while until the cops arrived to send them away.

Those two were part of the New Black Panther Party, which probably has no more than a couple hundred members and which is despised by everyone, regardless of political orientation.

Trump's voter intimidation effort is being organized through his campaign website.

Trump's campaigning in Connecticut, which hasn't voted Republican since 1988, at a time when he's having trouble holding red states. It's almost as if the campaign says, "What's the absolute best thing we could do to save this campaign? Ok, now let's do the exact opposite."

The more he does stupid shit like this the more convinced I am he's in the tank for Hillary.

There was a guest editorial in this morning's paper written by the former COO of Trump Plaza in Atlantic City, now living in Tucson. No real new revelations other than he (Trump) was just as big a douche 30 years ago, and people expecting a "different" Trump are delusional.

Apparently Trump has walked back his walking back on the whole ISIS-founder thing, among other things.
Trump visiting Connecticut, a heavily Democratic state, raised eyebrows among many Republicans. "It's asinine that he would be in Connecticut holding a public rally less than 90 days before the election," said Republican strategist Matt Mackowiak. "You don't see Hillary publicly campaigning in Idaho and Mississippi. I have to think this proves the candidate is running the campaign, which explains why it's such a disaster of biblical proportions." At several points the crowd chanted "lock her up," a frequent campaign rally chant in reference to Trump's Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. Trump told the crowd that normally he responds by saying he intends instead to defeat her in the Nov. 8 election, but this time added, "You know what? You have a point!" Trump also dropped his recent efforts to say he was not being serious when he said Obama was the "founder" of the Islamic State militant group. "It's the opinion of myself and a lot of people that he was the founder," Trump told the crowd.

Has anyone tried to measure the length of time that his handlers can control his speech? Unless they can actually change his mind (very unlikely), it seems like they can only get him to recant or act sane for a short period of time. Perhaps they need more handlers? Or do they only have limited access to Kilgrave?
