I enjoyed this. It's kind of the opposite of the typical Youtube geek nitpick/tear down video. (Though it still occasionally de-evolves into its own smugness.) It illustrates the negative effects of an obsessive adherence to canon. Generations is an ultra-sentimentalist film and I've always loved it.

I don't think Smoove has issues with spiders. He (she? when did that stop being a thing? ;) ) doesn't like octopi. I believe Keri is the one that that hated spiders.

Ah. I thought it was KeriKitKat. At least I was close.

I realized you can go on YouTube and watch pretty much any NFL playoff game without commercials. First I checked out the Bills greatest comeback against the Oilers. Now I am watching the Chargers playoff run in 1994. It's been long enough that I don't really remember those games, for example that they beat Marino late in his career. I do remember the great stop against the Steelers.

I wouldn't mind seeing one of the stomps the Steelers handed Dallas in the 70s.

Wife happened across some random list of the best/worst Star Trek characters of all time and asked me to guess the top 5. I said Garak is my #1. Nope, not even on the list. Turned out that Wife didn't even remember Garak (even when I described him, she was thinking of Gul Dukat). So I took her to school with this:

That's just about my favorite ST scene ever.

When the series first came on I thought Bashir was going to be my favorite character. But once Garak showed up he was it from then on easy. Every ep I just hoped he would have a part. And when he had a story it was always amazing.

Who's the best character in each series? Hot takes only.

Main Cast | Recurring/Minor/Guest

TOS: Spock | Sarek?
TNG: Data | Q
DS9: Odo... Quark? Why choose, ship them. Quodo!| Garak
Voyager: I dunno, is there a plant in Janeway's office or something I can vote for? I guess Chakotay or The Doctor were occasionally more interesting than annoying.
Enterprise: Phlox (bite me) | Shran... the rest of the main cast are bland as hell.
Discovery: I've only seen the first season (and have forgotten half of it). You know what? Despite my problems with the series, I actually find almost everyone interesting and well-rounded. If I had to pick someone, I'd probably follow the introvert trend and say Saru.

Main Cast | Recurring/Minor/Guest

TOS: Spock | Mudd (TOS didn't have many recurring minors)
TNG: Data | Q
DS9: Quark| Garak
Voyager: Was that the one with the holo-doctor? I liked him. The rest of the cast, not so much.
Enterprise: I dropped out after S1 and don't remember the characters. They had the hot Vulcan, right? Her.
Discovery: Despite having just binged S1, IDK most of the characters' names. Guess I'll go with Saru | (Michelle Yeoh).

To me it sounds a lot like some German mixed with Scandinavian or something.

You should watch DS9. It eventually became as thought provoking as TNG. In some ways, more so. They dealt with the aftermath of war and the human aspects of such an event. They also created a big bad that was sympathetic and understandable.

And it had Garak. The most complex and fun ST character ever. He could take out an entire squad of Starfleet soldiers, yet also knew how to hem pants.

If you need evidence of how well written DS9 was, and how multilayered Garak was, look no further than the episode In the Pale Moonlight. It’s routinely cited as one of the best episodes in all of the Star Trek franchise.

Still my favorite Garak moment.

Also, I think one of the reasons I love Garak so much is that you just know he is constantly feigning interest and enthusiasm for everything others say.

Forgotten chapter of Bruce Lee, a fight no one talks about that lead to a reformation of his fighting system...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BG-E7SuNT1o

TL;DW -- When Bruce Lee moved from Seattle to San Francisco, his constant criticism of the existing two long-standing kungfu schools and the Wushu they teach lead to him basically black-listed from Chinatown. Nobody will fight him, unlike in Seattle, and his criticism only get louder. When Bruce did it one too many times, the two heads sent the third guy, probably the best kungfu guy in Chinatown, to take-on Bruce Lee in a one-on-one match in Oakland, Lee's school, basically for bragging rights and to shut the upstart once and for all. As you can probably guess, Bruce Lee won that match, but he also learned that he was not as invincible as he believed, and that lead to his mellowing of his criticism and his formation of jeet-kuan-do. This incident was either completely rewritten or left out of the various "biographical" movies of Bruce Lee.

That fight is covered pretty extensively in Matthew Polly's recent biography of Lee. I picked it up while I was in Hong Kong (seemed like the right place to buy it), and it's a wonderful read. It also goes over the circumstances of his death VERY thoroughly, covering a lot of stuff I didn't know about. Really interesting book.
