Don't know if this has been posted in this thread yet (it's a little old), but it made me laugh hard enough to get a little tear in each eye.

From the comfort of my chair, I did consider that option. I wondered whether she would take the opportunity of me bending down to attack. I think at the end he is bending down for something and that's when it runs off.

It does appear that the cat is protecting cubs, so maybe appearing as non-threatening as possible is the way to go.

And yeah. I was also thinking that he could easily try and scoop up some stones, or even just give a really good kick of stones at her too.

Although, I imagine 'in the moment' there is a strong desire to not actually raise the aggression level of the fight.

I'd be worried that it would try to pounce me when I crouched to pick one up, but probably still the best option available.

Coulda been worse. As in both attack and animal type.

Also it wasn't a Honey Badger or there'd not even be a video.

If you're ever out in the wilds with someone and you hear them say "Oh look a baby animal lets go pet it" turn and head the other way while that person acts as a distraction.

I'm afraid my instinct might be turn my back and run and turning your back is probably a bad bad idea. The presence of mind to throw rocks, not likely. Look for something I could wield aka big stick, would be more likely, and again probably a worse idea.

I think about this sort of thing far more than I should as I always seem to be in the proximity of viscous dogs barely contained and wonder how/if I could fend one off, knowing the force of the jaws to be obscene. Usually something to wield, aka big stick, is the first thing my mind goes to and starts looking for. Of course dogs don't have claws and I'd imagine fending off the force of a tearing bite is different than fending off a weaker puncture bite but with two primary flesh shredders.

I've heard that the old lion-tamer trick of holding up a chair in the ring works because big cats get confused when they have to track too many points of interest (such as four chair legs). Confusion works against their attack instinct.

So maybe pick up three or four big sticks and wave them around as you back away swiftly?

I'd guess he passed out of her territory (or at least her threat zone), and she needed to get back to her kittens.

About a minute before she broke off, she also seemed to hear some other sounds in the woods. I’m guessing the combination of those other sounds, the growing distance between her cubs, and perhaps the guy’s move to grab a rock all combined into her totally backing off and running back to her cubs.

But yeah, clearly just guessing.

Also, check out how damn fast she is when she does take off. She literally throws up a trail of dust.

Would like to turn you onto this mans videos....David Hoffman. He is a film maker who did a lot of interviews and vids in the 70s and such. From 1979 a 9 year old computer kid and then in another video catches up with him and his dad these days to an elderly lady relating how life was before the 1900s.
