I'll be there. Taking the daughter to see Lights the night before.

And the Summerfest lineup came out today. Went ahead and pickep up a ticket to that as well.

Highlights include:
Snoop Dogg
Willie
Primus
Flaming Lips (doing Dark Side of the Moon)
Morris Day & The Time (this was my "holy shit" that made me buy a ticket... I mean, come on...)

Some bonuses for me include:
What Made Milwaukee famous
Robert Ellis

Wow. When did Edward Sharpe get a name? $35 + half again in service fees for his show on a Tuesday night. I guess I get to check him off the acts I'd like to see. It's too bad too because he was a cheap show less than a year ago that I missed out on.

On the other hand, has anyone seen Sleigh Bells? They're a Wednesday night show, and I'm trying to figure out if I can warrant the weeknight out. Stupid weeknight shows and being all old. It gets annoying.

While I'm at it, is bearing a large crowd worth it for Mindless Self Indulgence? Normally, I'd just show up and figure out if I'm going to have a good time and leave if I don't, but I hate the venue with a passion, so giving them my money and then leaving early is not an option.

That's actually a ringing endorsement as you and I tend to be pretty close musically on a lot of things... At least on the noiser end of the music spectrum. You gonna catch any of the Clutch shows coming up? We're in for the St Andy's show.

I think I have a review in this thread for Sleigh Bells from 2 years ago. Loud and sounding like the album at that time.

And there we go. I suppose next time I do a search.

"Awesome and loud" sounds good to me though I don't dig on short sets. :D I don't know enough about their albums to know how much I'd dig on them in general. They've been playing "Comeback Kid" on the radio and it didn't grab me at first but the more it played in the background the more I realized the music is really early 90s pseudo industrial masked by a poppy sounding singer. The more I heard the music and accepted her voice as a juxtaposition to what I'm used to, the more I dig on it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiwcUdX7XMw&ob=av2e" target="_blank

I just hope they actually play instruments. Standing on a stage with no theatrics, no playing, and no presence, behind Loops and Imacs for a live performance is something I'm too old to relate to.

I also need to remember that I'm old and growing deaf and I need to get ear plugs if I want to continue seeing shows.

If the show doesn't sell out, I think I'll be in.

And I will be attending the Dave Matthews Band Concert in May with the gf. She's a fan as well, has been in the Dallas area about as long as I have, yet has never been to one of their concerts.

There's almost always some reason to dislike a venue. However, you don't pay attention until a bunch of things stack up and then one thing reminds you of another.

For me the worst venue around (which I've been to twice this year :x ) is the Fillmore.

1) They are owned by LiveNation. I despise LiveNation, who have now expanded not just to take over Ticket Master but now are also associated with TicketWeb (who suddenly raised their fees. Go figure.) where very little value is added by the promoter/ticket distrubutor but the usually charge half again the price of the ticket for this small value addition of providing web based ticket distribution for the venue.
2) Their ticket pricing is too high. Why? See point one. They are owned by LiveNation and feel entitled to a larger take, which is then increased again by 50% in fees.
3) Beer Prices are too high. After double dipping on the ticket prices, they now feel the need to overcharge for beer.
4) I have to pay for parking. This is not nickel and diming to see a show here. All of these don't slowly add up, they nail you fast and hard.
5) The sound is crappy. For all of the money I am paying get me a better sound system.
6) The venue tends to attract a douchey crowd.
7) You have to show your ticket to move from one area to another, so different kinds of GA and non GA tickets don't get access to each other's areas.

But for me it all starts at the price level. I don't think the venue is providing value addition for the price they are commanding. If all that money was directed at the artist, then I'd make the decision about whether the artist was worth it. Now I just decide that venue/promoter isn't worth it, and I lament losing an artist to that promoter and hope they go on to do well without me.

Right now, our best local venue is almost an hour drive, in Pontiac. They're called the CroFoot. They used to drive TicketWeb in this area. They charged for beer like a regular bar. They're ticket pricing was about right. Parking was cheap. They didn't rape you for convenience/promoter fees. They brought in a lot of national and local acts that exist outside of traditional promotion. And the best part is that they easily have the best sound system in Southeast Michigan with a well organized stage for maximum viewing angles. However, I fear that TicketWeb's selling their soul to LiveNation may ruin the CroFoot.

I might have a lack of quality venues that I frequent, then. Most of my concerts have been at HoB or the amphitheater at the fairgrounds, which keeps getting renamed. The fees, I can do nothing about. If I want to see the act, I get to pay the vig on top of the ticket prices. And paying to park is a symptom of any large city. Having grown to adulthood in a small one, it does chap. I don't drink much, if at all, on these nights, as I know that beer prices are outrageous.

I dunno. Perhaps my tolerance is just higher, as I don't attend a lot of shows.

This makes me laugh because the show was at El Corazón, which hitbyambulance really has no love for. He'd have to give you the specifics, but basically it's a crummy dive.

The things you feel powerless against, we are all powerless against, which is why I hate certain venues (and promoters) and my hatred for them dissuades me from seeing a performer there, especially when there are so many acts I want to see. I recommend you find some good local talent at small clubs, to get the less expensive, small club experience. If you get turned on by it, then you'll start to wonder what you get for taking a date out on a $200 or more evening to a "smaller show" like Flogging Molly.

Example: so I miss the Black Keys in their slow build to immense popularity. Missing them will allow me to do a Black Jake show, an evening with Lez Zeppelin, see if I like Cymbals Eat guitars, and check out Chairlift, and possibly make squeak in Black Skulls for a just a hair more in ticket costs, all at much more intimate venues. The beer at Black Keys will be the cost of beer for two to three other shows, depending on which one's we're talking.

And the biggest beauty is I can walk out of any of the shows I listed early if I'm not feeling the band and not feel like I got ripped off. That's never going to happen a venue like Fillmore. (or JLA, as is the case for the Black Keys whom I never had the opportunity to see on their rise)

Flogging Molly for 2 was under $100 at HoB here. It's the 21.5% extras on the DMB tickets that kinda chap my hide, figure an even $200 after parking just to get in the door.

There is a good venue nearby that I've never gone to, but my thing is overcoming the hurdle of paying for tickets for a band I've never heard of, and might never see or hear from again.

I dunno, I'll have to ponder. I've spent much more than I need to on concerts lately to worry about going looking for more for the next few months.

mainly

- they don't seem to bother turning the heat on in the venue space in winter. it gets c-c-c-cold in there for less-attended shows;

- the venue space roof leaks when it rains;

- sub-par sound/acoustics;

- unoptimal performance space layout - the audience space is much longer 'horizontally' than the stage is, so if you're off to the side, good luck seeing anything. it's practically cavernous on the very edges and just feels weird.

i could also mention the powertrippy bouncers and below-average bathrooms, but that is not uncommon at any small venue. they also seem to book embarassing openers that clearly were not chosen by the headliners themselves. it's too bad, as there are usually a number of bands i want to see there (interspersed amongst all the screamo and xReachForTheDyingShadowsOfABurningTwoHornedUnicornx acts they seem to seek out).

Just got my tickets to see Ian Anderson perform Thick as a Brick in its entirety. 5th row center stage seats at the Fox in Detroit. Ian Anderson is an incredible musician and Ive always wanted to see Thick as a Brick done. Should be an awesome show. Its Saturday Nov 3rd and tickets went on sale today for those who may be interested.
Well do you ever get the feeling that the story's too damn real and in the present tense?
Or that everybody's on the stage and it seems like you're the only person sitting in the audience?

Gogol Bordello just announced for a show in May. It's the first time they've been town since they debuted their last album in Detroit a few years ago. It's at the Fillmore and I never even bought their last album... And yet I haven't missed them in nearly a decade. I have to make a (pre price level discovery) decision today because tickets go on sale tomorrow, they will sell out quick.

I kickstarted my way into a live studio recording and meet and drink... um meet and greet by Black Jake and the Carnies on Friday, so I'll be cancelling both Lez Zeppelin and the Motorcity Vaudeville Review. There is something about the Magic Bag. Every time I try to see a show there, something comes up. They probably do a half dozen shows there a year that I really want to see and I've yet I've never set foot in the building. Maybe if I'm not too wiped, I'll head up on Saturday to see local cover band MEGA 80s... just so I can step foot in the bar.

I'm also debating whether I want to go out on a Tuesday to see Cymbals Eat Guitars... I know nothing about them but somewhere along the line, for some reason, I scribbled a note down that told me to see them live. It's cryptic or my dementia is getting bad. Either way, I'm curious about what I was thinking about to make a reminder to myself to see a band I've never heard of.

Next Thursday is Chairlift. Their first time coming to Detroit as far as I know.

March is a pretty good month.

April is going to suck. Too many shows, not enough time, money and energy. The first week alone opens on with having to choose between Band of Skulls or Gotye and Kimbra (and not only is Kimbra OMG smoking hot but Gotye is getting these crazy incredible reviews for his/their stage show theatrics). Also that week is Electric 6 and then the Pack AD is opening for Our Lady Peace. The second week of April has even more going on. I just don't have energy reserve any more even if I want to go, can justify the expense, and know I'd enjoy myself. How unfair. I need to become independently wealthy. If I didn't have to work, I'm pretty certain I'd still have the oomph and strong desire to go out five nights a week.

So much fun back in the day. I didn't know they were around (still? again?). I thought they hung it up when their bassist commit suicide. I have sooo many good memories of DM shows in the late 80s. More than any other they were my continued introduction to the fun that is live punk show and how great a small show audience could be when every one is on a great high energy group think right along with the band. Oh, to be young.

I'm a little bummed that it's an outdoor venue but we should be nice and close to the stage - we'd better be at that price.

This will actually be the second time I've seen them - they played Portland during their still-very-short-but-slightly-longer tour for Spiritchaser.

It's turning into an expensive summer - Roger Waters is May 22 and those tickets were even more unGodly expensive.

You're telling me. I usually commit to show the night of they're usually cheap. I've bought 4 seats to Fillmore shows and to the Joe already this year as well as picking up a few other tickets for other people. This is in addition to shows at less expensive venues.

Currently in my possession for shows I haven't seen between now and June:

Black Jake recording tonight
Chairlift
Clutch
Danzig
Gogol Bordello
Roger Waters

I much prefer to be spoiled and make my decision on if I want to go DoS.

Can't get Fun tickets because their sold out.

Tempted to pull the trigger ahead of time on:

Sleigh Bells
Band of Skulls
Spiritualized

As all three shows are close to selling out.

And then there are all of the probables and want to go tos. No time. No energy. No money. So I have to set priorities and work up my moods and energies.

I used to work with the mother of the original drummer for BDM before they were anything in the US. Outside of this area they were only known to the various Nordic cultures. I never got that style of music but it's got a pretty big following in this area. I felt old then and then that was over a decade ago.

Since moving to Denver a few years ago, I've seen countless great shows for less than $30 in small intimate type venues.

I say this because I refuse to pay $100+ for tickets for 2 bands I've always said I would see at any cost.

Iron Maiden and Kiss are both coming here in the fall and I just can't see paying those prices. In fact, the Ticketmaster fees for Kiss are $28+ dollars. Can't and wont do it. Yes I could buy cheap seats for $30 or $40 dollars, but again fees make it even more. And I can't justify cheap seats for the price I can see other bands I enjoy standing right next to the stage.

Next up for me will be Cannibal Corpse, Abysmal Dawn, and Exhumed next month.

Once you become a regular of small venue shows, you never want to go back. You really question the every thing about arena shows. But it seems like I still one arena show a year or so, either because someone else really wants to go or because there will be once in a lifetime sort of show that is you know will be a cut above the rest. This year it's Roger Waters doing the Wall (even if that is really a three times in lifetime opportunity, I guess)

Denver is probably the greatest place to be small venue music fan too. No one playing in the states skips Denver. East, West, North, and South. The only way Denver will get skipped in North America is by Canadian Bands not venturing too far south (if you don't listen to indie music from Canada, you're really missing out) or from East Coast bands that never feel like they've been established enough to venture further west than Ohio.

Given how much Detroit has turned its back on live music and live music has turned its back on Detroit, you have my envy.

Wilco is coming to St. Augustine in May. Might try to camp out on the beach with some friends that night (you can walk from the camp site to the amphitheater). But tickets are $50. Oy vay.

A group of co-workers have persuaded me to go see KISS/Motley Crue with them at the end of July. I am not a huge fan of either band, but the combination of the bands, the crowd that will be there, and these particular crazy co-workers was just too intriguing to pass up, if nothing else just to be a fly on the wall!

I did see Motley Crue a few years ago when they toured with Aerosmith. It was good times.

Just got an email and it looks like my Dead Can Dance seats are in the fourth row.

That'll do. That will do just fine. 8-)
