I've held off on buying Mage Knight. I like Friday, but it's HARD. I am really looking forward to Hostage Negotiator this spring. It's along the lines of Friday, built 100% as a solo game.

Mage Knight solo is the ONLY way I play it. That is probably my favorite solo game...although Navajo Wars and Cuba Libre come in a close second.
I just like to set up a game on a Sunday afternoon and play it throughout the week whenever I get home and I have the time. Grab a beer, sit down for an hour...it's quite relaxing.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
I said it last summer, but I really need to learn how to play Mage Knight. I've decided that I need to plan on gaming at least one night a week for 3+ hours starting in May-August. Twice a month just isn't cutting it anymore. Between games that need figures assembled and painted and new games sitting untouched, I've managed to switch my PC gaming backlog to a board gaming one.

Maybe next year, maybe no go

For solo gaming, you have to get Robinson Crusoe.
A serious consideration for most of my recent purchases has been solo suitability. It's one of the reasons I can convince myself that I need more than one COIN game.

Yeah, I've played it with two and three people and found it to be quite enjoyable. I can totally see how you can play it solo, but I can tell from playing it half a dozen times it's something I'd enjoy most with others. I guess I'm into table talk.Chaz wrote:For solo gaming, you have to get Robinson Crusoe.

Anyone even slightly interested in solo gaming needs to grab the new edition of Nemo's War when Victory Point Games releases it.
My favorite solo games would be:
1) Mage Knight
2) Navajo Wars
3) Cuba Libre
4) Dawn of the Zeds 2nd edition
5) Robinson Crusoe (with HMS Beagle expansion)
6) Darkest Night
7) Friday
8) Pathfinder Adventure Card Game
9) Eldritch Horror
10) Firefly
Although I reserve the right to add 20 more to my top 10 list.

I think he owns about half of those, which isn't surprising. He's also been playing D-Day at Omaha Beach for the last few months. Did I also mention he printed out an updated version of Magic Realm and made me a copy? All I had to do was give him the cardboard stock and he crafted all the tiles and chits over a few weeks. He's insane.hepcat wrote:Solo games

You don't have table talk when you play solo? That's weird, I'm talking pretty much constantly. My solo partner is kind of an asshole rules lawyer.Smoove_B wrote:Yeah, I've played it with two and three people and found it to be quite enjoyable. I really need to pick up Cuba Libre, Navajo Wars, and Dawn of the Zeds 2nd. I'm still sad that Cuba Libre won't be reprinted until sometime around the third quarter this year, if I remember right.

For me, I think Shadows of Brimstone makes a pretty decent solo game. I agree with Eldritch Horror, probably putting it near the top of the list. Navajo Wars is a game I constantly want to pull out and play, but it takes some learning of the system before you can actually effectively play it (which means I will have to play the tutorial game again). You remind me that I need to pull out Dawn of the Zeds again as well. Nemo should be great, once that gold version finally gets finished (they seem to have hit a snag on the for some reason).
I've been staring at my copy of Fief 1429 and wishing I had 3-6 players readily available to try it out. There is a lot going on for such a streamlined ruleset.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
I haven't had a chance to play Shadows of Brimstone solo yet. The thought of setting it up and breaking it down makes me break out in hives. I love the game, but good lord...the set up time.
The AI for Navajo Wars is, in my opinion, almost revolutionary in the realm of solo boardgaming. If they were to apply that mechanic to a series of games, I'd probably buy them all.

I thought the same thing, but the rules for the game are so well put together that you can just follow along. They're laid out almost like a flow chart.baelthazar wrote: Navajo Wars is a game I constantly want to pull out and play, but it takes some learning of the system before you can actually effectively play it (which means I will have to play the tutorial game again).

I am hoping Broken Token or another game insert company makes an organizer for Shadows of Brimstone.

We've got the setup time for SoB down to about 10 minutes. We've played often enough that it goes pretty quick now, we all know what we need to lay out.

Played a few games of 7 Wonders with the Leaders and Cities expansions. I like both of them a lot, although it makes the game a bit longer and more complicated for the people that haven't played before.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
I picked up some bead storage containers at Michaels. They were on clearance. The colors are terrible, but so far they appear to be getting the job done. They help immensely with SoB. I still have to deal with the cards, but I've got the figures in one and the tokens in another. Makes it a lot quicker.

With the recent FFG de-listings of some games, I'm starting to think that Chaos in the Old World is probably going to become officially out of print soon. Makes me think I should get around to picking up a copy of it again, along with the expansion. A guy on BGG is selling both for $58+shipping, and I'm kind of thinking about it. Talk me down!

Kemet is a very similar-feeling game imo, and gives you cool custom powers that you choose yourself. You just don't chuck any dice in that one, unlike CitOW. I like CitOW, but *love* Kemet.Chaz wrote:With the recent FFG de-listings of some games, I'm starting to think that Chaos in the Old World is probably going to become officially out of print soon. I've got Kemet, but I kind of like the slightly more abstract area-control nature of CitOW.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
I have played many games of CitOW. I actually think it’s deeper than Cthulhu Wars but that depth comes with the price of some finicky rules and the possibility of just getting screwed by random setup conditions and card draw.Chaz wrote:And a hilariously large price! While both games cater to aggressiveness, CitOW takes that a bit further and gives you the option to absolutely destroy your opponents with little chance of them recovering. The Horned Rat expansion goes even further and pretty much requires that players work together to beat down Khorne in the early game so that he doesn’t just sweep through and get an easy win from killing the rat player’s horde of cheap units.
All that said, I would still recommend both games, just know what you’re buying and have a group of players who will appreciate the game styles.
Chaos in the Old World: Brutal, “take that” gameplay with a large amount of depth and randomness.
Cthulhu Wars: Surprisingly simple base rules with a relatively fast play time and randomness restricted to battles.

Yeah, I like the idea of Cthulhu Wars, but the hilariously high price they have to charge because of all that plastic means that I'm absolutely never going to buy it. There's a limit to the premium I'm willing to pay for pretty bits.

Don't forget that some of us here have, so far, failed to get the copy of Cthulhu Wars they ordered. I got another copy shipped to me by the Petersens, but it is coming the same weird ass logistics company as the first one. Hopefully, I have this by the end of next week.

Just a quick heads up that Tabletop Simulator is on sale on Bundle Star for 10 bucks until Feb. 2nd. It activates on Steam and has full workshop integration.
I picked it up during the last holiday sale and have been amazed at the community support. There are hundreds of great board game conversions available in the workshop. I've been messing with Twilight Struggle this evening and am about to try to convince Seppe or Zarathud to play a game with me online.
Oh, and my kickstarter for Omen: Reign of War's new edition just arrived today. I've bought the game twice now, but this new printing is so damn gorgeous I don't regret it one bit. Plus, metal coins!

OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
My Alien Frontiers kickstarter finally arrived, and I broke down to get the 6 player expansion delivered yesterday. The utility of adding another player just barely offset my aggravation at the badly managed project.

Re: OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?
played another game of Fallen. This time, I was Krogarn the Ogre King, and my son was Cael Oathbringer the Priest....the Final Battle came down to him winning, 3 - 1. Close game, and I felt I was going into the Final Battle pretty strong. He had gotten 4 treasures (a weapon, armor and two items), which helped him take the win. The last challenge really was a close one, as I had him beat (which would have tied us at 2-2, with the 5th and final challenge determining the winner of the game). He used his gear to great effect, helping him to manipulate my dice that I rolled, giving him the win.
This makes him 3 wins against me to my 1 win against him.
