Used to enjoy all their stuff but lost track of them after my wife passed and this is the first one Ive came across since then....like going on 3 years....or more.

EDIT: I looked it up. Mike “Beard Guy” Taylor died Dec 30 2018 but I didn't know it until later. My wife had her stroke 3 days before that and was in the hospital when he died. I remember finding out about his death later in 2019. So yep was right there when I lost touch with them and most everything else. They are a fun group though. Glad to see they are still together. Their kid must be like almost 10 now lol. Wow.

Wouldn't know that around here. Stores have always stocked Red Delicious . Along with Yellow Delicious, Fuji, Granny Smith, some of the Crisp types and many others. My wife loved Red and Yellow Delicious the most and thats what she bought. Me Ive always been a fan of Winesap.

We have a famous orchard near us we went to this time of year all the time called Apple Valley. They had many varieties as well. Make the best cider too. Now they have a bakery. But not gone in at least 6 years. I dont have an interest in driving that far down the road without my wife. Our apple festival was Sat here in town at the courthouse square and I didn't even look at it on the news.

Edit: Thinking back, I may be mistaken. I do see the delicious apples but it might be the Macintosh that were better for baking. It's been a long time since I cooked with an apple and I tend to by Granny Smith for eating.

I love McIntosh apples. But I've never found any worth eating outside of New England. The ones in the stores, if they ever show up, are generally soft and mushy. And lose their tartness too. But fresh from the orchard? I can eat them non-stop.

We had 7 apple trees (and a pear tree) growing up. McIntosh and Delicious. I wonder if they are still on the property. Things were yellow jacket magnets. They weren't ever soft and mushy unless you let them fall off the tree and sit too long, which we rarely did. Again, let them sit on the ground and you were doing nothing but feeding yellow jackets.

Loved me homemade apple butter every year on toast. I'd go through a jar a week for breakfast.

Wife used to eat nothing but Macs until I introduced her to Honey Crisps. Now she's all about the crisps. We went apple picking a couple of weeks too early this year because reasons, and brought home underripe apples. HCs are an early variety, but not before-Labor Day early. We ate a few anyway, she made some apple butter, and we still ended up composting almost half of what we picked.

You're right about Macs right from the orchard, though. Unfortunately they're a later apple. One must choose between Macs and HCs because they don't overlap much.

Apples - Pink lady (aka pink crisp aka lady crisp) - ever since I ate these a few years ago in the office (Wednesdays was breakfast day, the admin would get some poptarts, fruits and stuff), they are by far and away my favorite. Sweet and crisp, the very best!

Look for them to be pinkish for perfect taste.

Apples really depend on the orchard (meaning the health of the tree and the soil and etc).

I usually love the Honeycrisps and the Granny Smiths I get from our local grocery, but a lot depends on their freshness and the days since they were brought in. On the other hand, when we make the effort to get out and pick from the local orchards, we can really make a difference just right there at the source.

Lately we've been getting our weekly fruits and vegetables through a farm-share where the pickers know their stuff.
