Some of the venues here do this for at least some shows, I think more generally to maintain their own scheduling when they have a lot of acts going on, but I'm not complaining.

If the masses will mosh to Lee Rocker doing a swing set, they will mosh to anything. But this tour, he's doing the casino circuit, so maybe not.

Lee Rocker has a big wrecking pit kind of following and plays at venues that attract that crowd. While I'd shake my head at it, I can totally see it.

I'd love to see him live. The stars never align.

Probably both. Although I can't really do them anymore (at least, if I want to be able to walk the next day), this is my idea of a good mosh pit. (starts at :50, NSFW language)

My favorite pit ever was for the Dead Milkmen touring for Beelzebubba. Man that night was fun. Someone ran up my leg. I bit off a chunk of my tongue and was spitting blood for a day or more and I still had so much fun it was unreal. That was literally a half a lifetime ago. Nowadays I can't imagine getting near that sort of action and I wouldn't know what makes for fun.

Saw Roger Waters "The Wall" last night at the Rose Garden:

Had a much more pleasant experience than at the Tacoma Dome last year. Nicer venue, better seats and a much better view of the spectacle.

What an amazing show.

Ohhh, getting excited at our lineup for our summer music festival. They have Stephen Page one night, and Daniel Lanoie another night, and then Joel Plaskett on the 3rd night. Daniel Lanoie is a big producer, having produced albums for big artists such as U2 and Emmylou Harris, and in fact he produced Joshua Tree, which is arguably the best U2 album.

Jolie Louise

The Messenger. The Tea Party made that one famous when they covered it.

The Maker. This one's been covered by many such as by Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson.

Yeah, Im pretty pumped to see this myself. One week from today at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. While the ticket prices are expensive, this is one show where you get your moneys worth. I once again advise any one who hasnt seen this and has a chance, to do so. You will be amazed.

Caught Gogol Bordello on Saturday. They were better than they've been in years and I'm glad. It's seemed I was going to the show more out of habit than out of actual desire to see them again.

1) They had a DJ open for them. I'm getting really sick of DJs as opening acts. But then, I'm old.
2) Eugene Hutz literally treats vodka like Lux Interior used to treat red wine. That's just crazy.
3) Once they start on all of the Transcontinental Hustle stuff forward, you can step away from the show. Sadly that's probably twenty minutes or more of meh for the evening.

Danzig is this Saturday. Should be an excellent time. If nothing else I know people from four different social groups coming out that night. Getting people out of the house is normally worse than pulling teeth. But for some reason the Danzig show is getting people out for the evening whom I may only see once a year.

Roger Waters in next Tuesday. I'm pretty stoked for that too.

Peter Gabriel tickets went on "presale" this morning. I was heavily tempted but just didn't commit. If I shopped around for someone to go with, I'd have probably bought tickets, but I just couldn't be bothered. I just couldn't warrant finding someone to go with and paying $250 for two reasonably good seats to start the expense for the evening. Add in $20 for parking. $20 for gas. $100+ for dinner and drinks and I just can't do it.

I just got tickets for the Peter Gabriel show. I got lower bowl for about $75 per ticket. Not too bad for todays prices. Since Gabriel is one of the main acts my girlfriend has always wanted to see, there was no way I was going to miss out. Ive seen him 3 times before and hes a fantastic entertainer. He will be doing the entire So album with the original band he toured with when it was released. So this is gonna be like deja vu.

Bought tickets to see Silversun Pickups play an outdoor show at Pioneer Courthouse Square in September. They don't seem to be playing a lot of dates this year and I'm excited to see them again.

So far this summer all I've got is:

June 21 Jonathan Coulton
August 10 Dead Can Dance
September 9 Silversun Pickups

That' probably about all the childcare I can arrange anyway.

They changed prices (or should I say availability) since what they announced yesterday. The cheapest "presale" seats they had advertised yesterday were $125 seats. Now they've got $35 seats, which I would go for but even then service charges and the expense for the rest of the evening so I can sit 100 yards from the performer off to the side isn't going to do it for me. I'd still get caught on wanting $125 seats because I'd still get caught on wanting to be close enough to experience the show.

...

Actually it doesn't look like they changed availability. It looks like different presales options are open to different people. I'm guessing you are part of the PG fanclub. I'm just on the LiveNation mailing list, so the $125 (plus service charge) are the only ones available to me.

Danzig was solid. I got to see a lot of people I never see as a bonus. Danzig looks like shit but he performs well. The Misfits set was waaaaay too short. They did like six songs, which seems like a lot until you remember it's the Misfits. That was like about 8 minutes of the show. :(

Roger Waters was amazing. His opening almost brought me tears. I'd not pay $120 to see him perform The Wall again but I can understand why people would. You just can't pay enough attention to the music, the visuals, and technical nature of the show all at the same time. You end up missing stuff you really want to appreciate.

Dear Tick is this Sunday, which is awesome, really. I've hit one great show after another after another after another after another after a fairly long drought where I felt like I was beginning to see shows out of habit more than out of enjoyment of the experience. So my hopes are back up high.

But the real reason for the post is Neon Trees has announced that Walk the Moon is their opening band and I've been interested in hearing more from Walk the Moon for some time. Any one familiar with them? Are they worth checking out? For that matter are Neon Trees any better live than they are recorded? What sets them apart? They're asking for $20 at a $10 venue and they've never grabbed me long enough to give them a chance but something about Walk the Moon just pulls me in.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDVW81bXo0s&ob=av2e" target="_blank

And not to mention I missed the last wuss rock bands I was going to see (Gotye and Kimbra and Grouplove) and I sort of regret them both, even if I need to turn the station every time Gotye comes on now and they're choosing really crappy Kimbra songs to air.

Edit, actually three wuss acts. I missed Fun too because they got huge right before they came to town and suddenly their weeknight $10, weren't going to play to anyone show sold out. :(

As LM mentioned, The Wall was awesome. This was my 2nd time and one of the best parts was seeing the expressions on the faces of the two guys with us who hadn't seen it yet. I can't wait for the blu ray release. I will own it day one.

I still have Rush, Ian Anderson and Peter Gabriel to go this summer. God I love live music!

Not my style, but Dallas is getting something that appears to be rather rare: Distant Worlds: music from Final Fantasy:
With more than 100 musicians on stage, "Distant Worlds: music from FINAL FANTASY" is the international concert phenomenon featuring composers Nobuo Uematsu's and Masashi Hamauzu's richly atmospheric music. Originally created to enhance the gaming experience of one of the best-selling video game franchises in history, the compositions have garnered legions of fans of their own. "Distant Worlds" returns to Dallas to perform with the Dallas Symphony for the first time since 2009. The concert features music from throughout the FINAL FANTASY series, including FINAL FANTASY SERIES: Prelude, FINAL FANTASY V: Clash on the Big Bridge, FINAL FANTASY X: Suteki da ne, FINAL FANTASY VIII: Eyes on Me, FINAL FANTASY X: Zanarkand, FINAL FANTASY XIII: Blinded By Light, and many other favorites!

Conducting the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Chorus is Music Director and Producer Arnie Roth, the GRAMMY Award winner and conductor of FINAL FANTASY concerts in North America, Europe, and Asia. Special Guest vocalist Susan Calloway, featured as the vocal soloist on the recently released FINAL FANTASY XIV, will perform many of the most beloved songs from FINAL FANTASY with the orchestra.

If I have the oomph this weekend, it's the Mike Hard Show on Friday and Walk the Moon on Saturday.

Caught Deer Tick on last Thursday and I give them hearty so so. I caught half one of the opening bands, Turbo Fruit, and they closed out the set really well after a so so performance. It was the first time I've ever been to the Magic Bag, and it was a fantastic venue. Great sound. Great layout. Plenty of seating for a GA show. And beer was at standard bar pricing. Deer Tick, however, just didn't have enough magic in their performance, not for a Thursday night show anyway. Maybe if it were a weekend and I had nothing better to do.

Roger Clyne, June 26. It's a Tuesday and I've already seen him so it's not happening. Too bad as he'll be playing at the Magic Bag, and like I just said, it's an excellent venue. I guess I'll just have to wait for another time for that cold black sun cracked numb inside soul of mine to come alive.

I've already been scratching weeknight shows off my potential to do list left and right. That's what made Deer Tick such a shame. I have high hopes for a band when I see them on weeknight. Even if it's a cheap night out, my week nights (and potentially vacation days after) are precious to me. Roger Clyne was a casualty of timing.

BTW. I wish I lived in your neck of the woods. This would be my show of the summer:

http://lineup.orionmusicandmore.com/" target="_blank

And I could leave just as Metallica take the stage and love the weekend.

Crappy that Suicidal overlap with Cage the Elephant and not as crappy that Sepultura and Avenged Sevenfold would have to take a back seat to Titus Andronicus

Does anyone seriously want to see Metallica perform the Black album? Seriously?

I wonder why we get no festivals like that around here? :( So many cool festivals across the whole US all summer long and they don't get any going here.

Forgot to report on the Craig Finn show. We didn't really know what to expect, and I'm not sure Craig did either. This was only his second solo show (the first being earlier that day at the Go Division street festival in Chicago). The opening act was slated to start at 10:00, but they went on at around 10:30. Craig started probably around 11:15. I have to admit, that's a bit late for this old guy.

The show ended up being Craig Finn alone on stage with an acoustic guitar and a microphone. Given the intimate bar setting, it made for a fantastic setup, and my ears weren't even ringing the next day. He played only solo stuff (except for one Lifter Puller song near the end - no Hold Steady), and even though I didn't know all the songs, it was still terrific. Highly recommended for anyone who gets the chance to see the show.

Black Jake and the Carnies tonight. Hands down my favorite local band. But no one I know ever wants to see them. :(

Thinking about doing a free show for Here Come the Mummies, whom are supposed to be a bunch of fantastic musicians from Nashville whom keep their identities secret.

July begins the slow season:

Reverend Peyton are playing at Pig and Whiskey. Sat 7/14/2012 (Free show. Which means short and crowded. Too bad. I'ma be happy to go, but might decide staying isn't worth it.)
Nekromantix and Flatfoot 56 Tue 7/17/2012 (A weeknight show maybe. The Nekromantix don't really do it for me live but I've been wanting to see a full set from Flatfoot 56 for a few years now)
Fang Island Thu 7/26/2012 (I'll probably take a chance here and take Friday off of work to see these guys on a Thursday night.)
Girl in a Coma Fri 7/27/2012 (Their shows are hit or miss, so my showing up will be hit or miss. Really it will depend on how I feel about not doing much for most of July.)
George Throroughgood Sun 7/29/2012 (Never seen him. Always wanted to. Maybe this year will be the year if I can get cheap tickets, or maybe even gamble enough to ask for comped tickets, as he is playing at a casino)

It's that time again where I need to broaden my appreciation but I'm just not finding a lot of new stuff that I'm feeling right now.

Great show, they sing with a ton of passion:
