Re: Video Games Randomness - Prioritize specific game threads!
The time distortion caused by playing some games versus others is very weird to me.
When I was playing BG3, I would simply lose multiple hours at a time without realizing it. If you would have asked me how much time I had spent with it in Act 1, my guess would have been around 25-30 hours...when in reality it was closer to 50. MMO's are the same way. I can sit down in front of one and time simply melts away.
Other games are the exact opposite. I bounced off Tales of Arise originally, but gave i another look this week and am quite enjoying it. I guesstimated how much time I had put in and felt like it was probably around 20 hours over the past 4 days. Checked my save file and it turns out I'm barely at 12 hours. Diablo 4 was much the same way. It felt like I had played it for ages, but barely hit around 40 hours in total.
It's just strange to me how that perception works sometimes.

I think I am suffering from some sort of PC game burnout. I have a dozen games I can try, NOT counting the various bundle subscription games I haven't even activated yet. Yet I don't feel like running ANY of them.

I simply do not have the fine motor skills for today’s platformers. Tried the most recent Crash game tonight and could barely get past the first few levels. The twitch skills have just disappeared completely.

I know what you mean. I was playing the remake of the first Ratchet and Clank last year and I made it I think as far as the final boss, but I couldn't do it.

I championed Tower of Time, and was eagerly anticipating Dark Envoy but the early reviews are fair-to-middling and the intro does not inspire confidence. As always, your experience may be completely different so posted to get the word out.

Steam got completely screwed up. Wouldn't finish downloading. Games wouldn't play. Couldn't do anything with it even tho I looked up possible solutions so I nuked it from orbit. Took all night to get everything uninstalled. Installed it again this morning and everything looks kool. Download at 378 Mbps. Everything downloads promptly now. Yeah!

Congrats dbt. Sometimes you have to nuke stuff. I did that to my Kindle Fire tablet thats made me hate it for years because it was so slow always telling me it was out of memory and storage even though Id deleted everything and put in a huge sd card. It would take 2 minutes to open a radio player or bring up youtube. Sometimes it would give up and put me back at the menu. I was ready to shoot it. I factory reset it the other day and its been pretty snappy now. Lots new ads though. Be glad when I can get a real android tablet like a Samsung and ditch this Amazon semi android faker. Cant even get apps off google play..have to use amazon apps. Ugh.
xwraith that video is beautiful. As a child of the 1970s the F4 Phantom was my favorite fighter jet until well into the 80s. Loved its look with dual engines, turned up wing tips and down turned tail fins. She looked like she was hunched and speeding to her prey. Wasn't until the 90s I found out how hard the pilots had to fight to get a gun put on it. Brass thought missiles were the wave of the future back then and she didn't even have a gun for up close personal time with the enemy. Pilots were welding on gun pods and such to take down Migs close up in.
Jolor Im not sure on what reviews you mentioned. From what I see its getting mostly positive ranking on Steam. Looks like a fun game. Would have made a cool mp co op shooter like left 4 dead drop in drop out type thing. But Single player only is fine if they make the story cool and deep with lots of nice cutscenes and graphics. I love a good single player story like that. May try to grab it on sale sometime.

they didn't put a gun on it but then the ROE over Nam for pilots was that they had to positively ID an aircraft as hostile and that put them inside effective missile range. There were many many lessons learned about effective ROE that are promptly forgottenDaehawk wrote: Wed Nov 01, 2023 8:39 pm Congrats dbt. Sometimes you have to nuke stuff. Geeze, to me that seems nightmarish. I like lights, and I like color, but I hate glare, and I definitely don't want direct line-of-sight to the lights!

That reminds me of this asshole optometrist who was selling my wife glasses that had already subtotaled up to $600 when he offered the anti-glare coating and she said no. He said, "Wow, I've never met anyone who loved glare before."Blackhawk wrote: Fri Nov 10, 2023 1:04 am Geeze, to me that seems nightmarish. Re: Video Games Randomness - Prioritize specific game threads!
This is how my computer room / bedroom looks at night when Im playing games and feeling good. Theres a few more lights but I want to one day redo this entire room. Its the same as its been for about 63 years. It was my wife's room as a child then as an adult before me. Then it was our room for a long while. Since she has been gone its just my room and little Buster of course. Its where I basically live. Im here all day and night. I use the pc here and sleep here. The rest of the house is storage or the kitchen or the bathroom. I go to those rooms but come back here. Been here 33 years in this room really. Unless we were out doing our life thing shopping movies eating traveling. I come home I come in here.Anonymous Bosch wrote: Sun Nov 12, 2023 8:57 pmDaehawk wrote: Thu Nov 09, 2023 9:56 pm One day Ill turn my pc room into a glowing bunker lol.

But Im thinking when I have the money soon Ill redo it all. Get a real computer desk. Ill have to get used to that lol. New window shades. New paint. New rugs. Open it up some. New bed and mattress. That kinda stuff. And when I do Im gonna really add lots of this mood lighting to make it glow. I find it calming and nice. When Im playing my games at night and Im a little buzzed and Im deep in a underground city in say ESO I want my room room to glow like whats on my screen and match the colors im seeing in game as if they are reflected on the walls all around me .
I mean this is MY life now. Ive never had MY life all to my own the way I want it to be. And this room will be that for me. Its been enough time now since Donna and Im in my 50s. If not now then it may be never. No time like the present
So instead of a man cave Im going to have me a man room. With big comfy bed of my choosing, big tv, big curved monitor, glowy PC, soft flooring, and lights to shine to Venus...if I want them.
In this pic you have to imagine all that stuff moving up there.

Re: Video Games Randomness - Prioritize specific game threads!
I'm all in favor of colored lights! I like lights, and I like color (and did long before "RGB lighting" was a thing.) The one thing I would absolutely never want is to actually see the lights themselves. I'd position them where they shine on a wall and light the wall up, but having them where the bulbs are in my line of sight would be like using two flashlights for binoculars.
I also keep colored lights away from my forward cone of vision when looking at a screen - they tend to distort one's perception of the colors. I just have a natural 'daylight' backlight on my monitor (like this. It lights up the wall behind just a bit, enough to prevent eye strain in a dark room*, but not enough to 'light it up.' And since it is daylight toned, our brain doesn't take it into account when looking at the colors on the screen (our brains evolved to see that color of light as 'neutral', unlike colors, and unlike pure white, which is just a bit different.) I also don't have lights directly behind me (reflections are the enemy of good.)
*Yeah, your mom was right - watching TV in a dark room is bad for your eyes. Our eyes are evolved to see things in 3d. If we see a monitor (or TV) and a wall, our brains see the monitor as a 2d image. But if it's dark and you can't see the wall (or other objects behind it), our brains try to interpret the 2d monitor as if it were 3d, as if it had depth. That is one of the things that leads to eye strain, headaches, and fatigue. Thus the value in lighting up the wall just enough to be able to tell it's there.

Re: Video Games Randomness - Prioritize specific game threads!
Forgotten, Far Cry-style FPS game resurfaces on Steam after 18 years
Far Cry 6, Fallout 4, Rust. When you think of open-world, sandbox shooters, these are the names that immediately come to mind. Originally launched in 2004, Ubisoft’s free roaming FPS set the model for choice-based, open-ended run-and-gunners that mix vehicle and conventional combat. Crysis took the genre further; Just Cause added some anarchy and physics-driven chaos. But in the storied ancestry of sandbox FPS games, there’s one name that, until now, has been reduced to a mere footnote. Spectacular, surreal, and often so bad that it’s actually good, this forgotten page from gaming history is finally back on Steam after almost two decades.
Boiling Point Road to Hell is like Far Cry except with a little less technical polish and a lot more gall. An FPS game from a bygone era, it casts you as the deliciously named Saul Myers, who arrives in the fictional South American nation of Realia on a mission to rescue his kidnapped daughter. “Saul Myers,” the trailer promises, “is going to hit…Boiling Point.” If you weren’t around to play this back in 2005, then you’re in luck, as it’s just returned to Steam and available right now.

I dont recall it at all. Ill watch the video and see what it is about.
Edit: ok watched it. Old graphics for sure but at the time I guess they were great. Are they releasing it as it was then or are they fixing it up to modern graphics as best they can and such?

Anyone remember the Hollywood Mogul series of video games? How about The Movies by Lionhead Studios? Well, there's a new game come out in 2024 that deals with somewhat of the same subject, although unlike The Movies you will not be able to actually make your own movies. It's called
Hollywood Animal and from the official announcemen trailer it looks pretty interesting.

I loved Hollywood Mogul. Never quite got into The Movies. Thanks for the heads-up. Hadn't heard about this one.
EDIT: Wow - watched the trailer and there's a lot of cinema/film minutia to fiddle and mess around with. Looks fun. Though I haven't played any of the devs' other games. Hopefully it'll be good. Added to the wishlist.

Half-Life gets massive update for 25th anniversary, new maps and more
Half-Life is undoubtedly one of the most pivotal video games to ever release, redefining the sci-fi genre and shooters alike. Valve’s debut FPS smashed records left and right, continuing to dominate as one of the developer’s most popular games decades later. As the sci-fi shooter celebrates its 25th birthday, Valve is releasing a brand-new anniversary update with a mind-boggling amount of fresh content for fans. If you haven’t played in a while, or ever, this is your call to.

Well well. May have to replay it sometime then. Lord knows I played Half Life 2 enough times.

The technical improvements are nice. I can't say that I'm all amazed by the maps - even when it was a current game, Half-Life's multiplayer wasn't all that good. It was the mods for HL's multiplayer that made it so worthwhile (Team Fortress Classic, especially!)
Of course, I replayed it and the expansions a couple of years ago, and don't see myself trying it again any time in the near - or even moderate to long - future.

I'm looking for suggestions for a game like Satisfactory, a factory game but played in a full 3D world in first person rather than from some God's eye camera view. I was going to fire up Satisfactory again but thought I'd see if there are some fun alternatives. Thanks!

Tough one. There aren't a lot - most factory games are top down, and most first person management games aren't factories.
There are some that have some similar qualities. Medieval Dynasty, Hydroneer, and Space Engineers, for instance, but I don't know of any that are just like it.

Take a look here. You can put tags in the search field, one at a time, to filter the entire Steam store. Start with 'base building' and 'first person' as filters, then play around with the other filters listed for Satisfactory: Adventure, Automation, Base Building, Building, Co-op, Crafting, Early Access, Exploration, First-Person, Indie, Multiplayer, Open World, Open World Survival Craft, Resource Management, Sandbox, Sci-fi, Simulation, Singleplayer, Strategy, Survival
