Huh. I've never played a game with that "feature" before and think I would be really annoyed if I did.
This is normally just regular game progression. You can't play chapter 2 until you have the chapter 1 achievement, etc.
I'm playing
Sweet Transit and that's how they used some achievements, they represent how you have unlocked new content by achieving some goal.

There is a third reason. Some games unlock content with achievements, a la
Into the Breach, as example.

FTL: Faster Than Light as well.

Conceptually, the "achievement" itself likely doesn't unlock the game content, it's just that doing the thing that unlocks the game content also generates an achievement.

I wonder what kind of game you'd get if you could blend the Roman Legions of old with the Warhammer Legions or future?

You'd get Warhammer 40k.
That's not snark. That was a good bit of what they did for the Imperium of Man (aka, the Empire.)

I bring to your attention two games from the Steam sales thread today that caught my own attention. Of the two I think Grime holds more promise.

I tried the demo, it was rather rough. If you ever played
The Movies video game, it is a lot like it, the setting up of buildings, hiring talent and crew and moving a script through all the steps to make a movie; pretty much a tycoon game. I didn't get all the way through the demo, but I did get my first movie released which looks very like the one above.
What I did not see was any indication of what made
The Movies so good, the ability to use strawman sequences to create a unique movie in Creative mode. Maybe later...

For those unfamiliar with The Movies video game and what could be made created using it in Creative mode, you can go to the Internet Archive and view what is probably the most famous film made using the game,
The French Democracy

I seem to remember a game like this from the 90s. Sorta in the same style at the car building game Detroit which I loved. We really could use more unique ideas in games like we had in the 80s and 90s. Companies took chances and made games with all kinds of ideas. Ive got car design and building games, treasure hunter underwater diving games, jungle warfare games, and games that let you build a starship and explore space after earth disappears. It had space ship view battles and then you could have landing party away missions on planet surfaces and a third part that let you collect and design your ship back at moonbase.
Hell Id LOVE a Space 1999 game where Im commander of Moonbase Alpha and design new Eagle ships and go on space missions to try and get Luna back home. Why does no one take chances these days? Theres no innovation.
Heres those games I mentioned. I own them all mint in box still...
1993's Detroit
1992's Sea Rogue
1993's Seal Team
1992's Planet's Edge - this is one of my favorite games ever. The box art used to make my dream about the game a couple years before I could buy it and get a pc.

Looks like this is permanently free now? A very well done tower defence game. Buy your supplies and lay out traps during the day. Spring those traps at night to banish waves of werewolves. A good variety of traps are available, as are weapons, tonics, etc.

Gameplay looks fun and unique. There is a demo, as well. I will likely fire this (the demo) up after playing through a few games from my backlog first.

Does anyone else play games like this?
I turn off the in-game music and play my own soundtrack. Where there is dialogue that goes on forever I will progress it with my left hand while browsing OO or the inter web with my mouse.

It depends on the game. If it's a game that's laid back and doesn't require a great deal of focus (like Satisfactory type game, or MMOs when doing dailies), then yeah - I'll turn on my own music or a podcast. I'll usually stick with something that matches the theme (lots of Star Talk alongside Planet Crafter for instance) and isn't too obtrusive. If it's a game that has lots of atmosphere (say, System Shock), I'll just cut the music entirely and enjoy the ambience built in to the game. Otherwise I generally stick with what's built in.
I generally pay attention during dialogue, though.

I always turn all music off and Ive never used my own ever. I used to leave music on when i first stated pc gaming. Some games had great music liek DOOMs and C&C. Sometimes they have the best music around and Ive played some simply as music. I ever now and then leave music on if it in non shooter or something and is nice but I turn is waaaay down. Below 50%. But in shooters and most others its off.

My standard starting volume settings, depending on what's available:
Master Volume: Whatever
Ambient Volume: 90%
Music Volume: 50%
Effects Volume: 65%
Speech Volume: 100%
Tweaked once I've played and see how they mixed them. Given developers' habits of giving important mission/objective/story information in the middle of gun battles, it's often the only way to hear what's being said.

I can’t even imagine playing most games like this. Skipping dialog and turning off music would be eliminating so much of what makes a game interesting to me.

I usually play with the music off unless it adds to the enjoyment of the game, thematically or something similar.

The problem isn't the music. The problem is when a game has a limited score and you've heard the same song 20 times, or when the music just isn't very good. That's the point at which I replace the music with my own.
And some games are so atmospheric that I find that the music actually gets in the way. Sneaking through an old enemy ship, hearing the splash of the waves on the hull, hearing the creak of the metal, dripping pipes, and the pouring rain outside... sometimes I just want that atmosphere without the additional music meant to add drama.

That seems like a very specific case. And not what was presented above.
"I turn off the in-game music and play my own soundtrack. Where there is dialogue that goes on forever I will progress it with my left hand while browsing OO or the inter web with my mouse."
The implication was that this is done every time. Immediately. You seem to be responding to a different situation entirely.

Okay. It just seemed like you were responding to the people that said they couldn't understand why someone would turn the music off immediately with the logic that you get tired of it after repetitive listening. To me it didn't come across as evolution; it seemed like a direct response.
But I don't have a dog in this race and I'm not going to get in an argument.

i will definitely do this - tends to usually happen with some game i've (re)played a ton already or where the music just isn't important, and i then dedicate my ears to whatever new album i recently acquired.

Continuing to "evolve" the discussion ...
I generally turn the music way down (10%) so it really is in the background. The very few exceptions included: Frostpunk and Painkiller. The music very strongly contributed to the nature of the game in both cases.
When I do listen to an OST, it is on its own either at work or when puttering.
