The important thing to remember about critics is that sometimes they agree with ordinary viewers/gamers, sometimes they disagree, and sometimes it's The Boondock Saints.
Ha ha, I love it! Very true, too.
Edit: bah, new page!

I’ve been keeping my eye on this game by the developers of Battle Brothers for a while now and this very favorable preview has me pretty excited:

Obviously combat mechanics are very important for a squad based tactical combat game, but I find the meta aspects to be more influential as to whether I am interested or not. I'll keep an eye on this one.

Terminator: Resistance.
Yay or Nay?
At all time low on Steam right now. I vaguely recall hearing good things about it.

I liked it; if you're a fan of the movies I believe you'd find it enjoyable. It's not long (only took me around 11 hours to finish) - which might be a good or bad thing for some people. It has a bit of an indie game feel - no lengthy cut scenes or revolutionary game play - but in terms of making you feel like you're fighting a war against Terminators? Absolutely.

Well that sounds good. How are the rpg-lite aspects?

Also enjoyable. Very lite. There's salvaging/crafting and picking skills in various special areas when you level up (Combat, Science, Survival). Gives you some more options in how you want to play (stealthy, hacking, etc...) but I honestly just remember lots of shooting. Being able to sneak or hack something was always a bonus, never something I could do to progress the story (but maybe I wasn't putting enough points into something).
Either way, I think all the lite RPG stuff just helped differentiate it from being a classic shooter (like DOOM). Helps you feel like you're doing something productive.

That looks fantastic! I couldn't get past the legless torsos of Battle Brothers, but this looks and sounds right up my alley.

Terminator: Resistance was awesome! Best Terminator game in ages. I felt like I was in that universe trying to survive. It made me thirst for more games like it in the Terminator franchise but there are none...yet. The new one, Survivors, looks to be a winner that I want to play when it hits. Also the rts Dark Fate looks fun as hell. Just a different style of game. I prefer the shooters with story and more open world.

Sony is taking Concord, its latest PlayStation game, offline on September 6th, following poor sales of the game. The first-person hero shooter launched exclusively on PS5 and PC on August 23rd, but estimates have put sales at under 25,000. Concord also only managed to hit an all-time peak of 697 players on Steam, lower than the launch peak of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum — widely regarded as the worst game of 2023.
...
Firewalk Studios’ mention of options “that will better reach our players” and the refunds make it seem like Concord, if it does return, will move to a free-to-play model. “We’ll keep you updated and thank you again to all the Freegunners who have joined us in the Concord galaxy,” says Ellis.

Maybe they should just make the game we saw in the cinematic trailer. I'd probably play that, just like I would've played the game we saw in the original Overwatch cinematic trailer.

It makes sense. It was intended as a direct competitor to Overwatch. But it took so long to make that the wildly popular hero shooter genre is now both overcrowded and outdated. It was replaced with battle royales, which are being replaced with extraction shooters.
The way the multiplayer trends work these days, you probably need to get a competitor on the market in two or three years, or there won't be a market. Eight years won't cut it.

I thought Concord was a Valve game. Also I never heard a thing about this game until the controversy.
Re: Video Games Randomness - Prioritize specific game threads!
Deadlock is an upcoming action game developed and published by Valve for Windows. It combines the hero shooter and MOBA genres.
Deadlock has been in playtesting since 2023, and players with access can invite their friends. As of August 2024, it had reached a concurrent player count of just above 100,000. Since May 2024, numerous leaks have occurred, and a journalist was banned from the matchmaking service after writing a preview for the technology site The Verge. Valve officially unveiled the game in August 2024.

It looks like Harebrained has at least one more game in them, post-Paradox.
The video doesn't shed much light, but there is a fair bit of info on the Steam page. Given that they're indies again, it wouldn't surprise me if this turns out to be an Early Access game on Steam, or even a Kickstarter. Do people still do game Kickstarters?
There’s an old story, so old it was old when the Arc was first built. The hero Theseus’s decaying ship is replaced, piece by piece, until none of the original parts remain. Is it still the same ship?
GRAFT splices together tense survival horror with a dark RPG experience in a thrilling new adventure from the developers of BATTLETECH and the Shadowrun Trilogy. Explore a dying world haunted by darkly fascinating characters and nightmarish monsters as you delve into the mysteries of the Arc. Tear pieces from your enemies to transform yourself into something new—something capable of surviving the horrors that prowl around you. Every Graft brings with it some piece of its previous owner’s identity, changing more than just your physical body.
You are the Ship of Theseus. Who, or what, will you be when you escape?

Not a comment on the game, but.... what the #$%^ is "post-cyberpunk"? "post"?? That threw me so completely that I can't even process the game itself.

Postcyberpunk includes newer cyberpunk works that experiment with different approaches to the genre. Oftentimes, such works will keep to central futuristic elements of cyberpunk—such as human augmentation, ubiquitous infospheres, and other advanced technology—but will forgo the assumption of a dystopia. However, like all categories discerned within science fiction, the boundaries of postcyberpunk are likely to be fluid or ill-defined.

Anyone have experience with this one? Part of the the monthly humble bundle. I'm not paying CAD$44 for it.

I have been playing a fair amount of Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor and having a good time. Easy to jump in and do a run and it has that "just one more run" allure.

Age of Mythology: Retold hit GamePass yesterday so I've been messing around with it and having a good time. I fondly remember the original which I believe I finished. It's essentially just Age of Empires with a handful of mythical units and some God powers you can use, but if you like old-school RTS games and particularly Age of Empires, it's a lot of fun.
The Retold version obviously gave it a graphical overhaul and adds a lot of quality of life improvements. I believe there are 50+ missions over three campaigns, so it's a good chunk of game.
Re: Video Games Randomness - Prioritize specific game threads!
This reminds me of Surviving the Aftermath, a little. Survival encampment management, although Surviving had a bit of a meta exploration game too. Semi-autonomous characters with their own skill sets. I did not pay full price for this one either, but I did play it a fair bit.

I am not a huge survival genre fan, but I really liked Green Hell. I loved that there was an underlying story, I loved figuring out what was going on, and I enjoyed the survival and hunting mechanics.

Based on the title I thought this was a game about surviving if the Green New Deal laws get passed.
