All of your security and privacy issues can be solved by simply uninstalling your browser, too.

More importantly, redirecting the links to an X alternative site which is still accessing X to pull the content doesn't achieve the original goal of not giving X any traffic or attention. I get your position, AB, but there is no alternative that will achieve the goal of 'not loading any X content from OO unless the user takes explicit action to do so' other than... not auto-parsing links.Blackhawk wrote: Fri Jan 31, 2025 2:25 pm All of your security and privacy issues can be solved by simply uninstalling your browser, too.

No, that may be your particular goal, but the premise that I was specifically addressing and responding to was as follows:Zaxxon wrote: Fri Jan 31, 2025 2:37 pmMore importantly, redirecting the links to an X alternative site which is still accessing X to pull the content doesn't achieve the original goal of not giving X any traffic or attention.Blackhawk wrote: Fri Jan 31, 2025 2:25 pm All of your security and privacy issues can be solved by simply uninstalling your browser, too.
…which my recommendations unequivocally do achieve, and hardly equate to "simply uninstalling your browser."Anonymous Bosch wrote: Fri Jan 31, 2025 1:11 pmNot necessarily; for anyone genuinely concerned over this, I would again recommend using either the Xcancel.com Redirector (Chrome) or X Cancelled (Firefox) add-on, which allow you to view everything on Twitter or X.com without an X.com account or ever directly engaging with the original platform at all. If you're super-paranoid, it's effortless to block anything and everything to do with Twitter or X.com using uBlock Origin (or whatever equivalent adblocker you have installed) without impeding upon the ability of others to post and share relevant information from a customary platform.Blackhawk wrote: Fri Jan 31, 2025 12:52 pm I'm supporting the idea, not as censorship, not as change for the sake of change, but because I want to cut as many ties between myself and X as possible. Just automatically embedding links adds all sorts of ties - tracking, traffic, data collection, etc.

Re: New media handler
If the solution results in people continuing to build discussions around content that becomes invisible, the results are still excessive. I already have plenty of privacy tools (some of which you mentioned, others of which you did not.) I could completely block X. The problem is, doing so would break many conversations.
I admire you knowledge of privacy and security options, but I still find a lot of them to be excessive for most people.

At the end of the day, though, it's not a world-ending issue. I'd prefer to encourage people to look for better, less compromised, more reliable sources for information, while at the same time weakening the link between OO and Musk. Verbally encouraging people has been tried, but at the end of the day, a lot of people are simply lazy, and will continue to do the easy thing as long as it's a one-step process.

At least we now have Bluesky on even footing, forum software-wise, so for those who want to switch over their sourcing, it's no longer kneecapped here specifically.Blackhawk wrote: Fri Jan 31, 2025 3:21 pm At the end of the day, though, it's not a world-ending issue. Re: New media handler
What is up with Izzy's posts like this one? I see an entire screen of emptiness under his signature before the next post. I've seen it a few times before too - but only on his account. Does it have something to do with Bluesky quotes (although I haven't seen anyone else similarly afflicted)?

I do not see anything weird with the post you linked.stessier wrote: Mon Feb 03, 2025 1:19 pm What is up with Izzy's posts like this one? Re: New media handler
Are you having other Bluesky posts blocked, or just the one's he's posting? While I can see Bluesky (and Twitter) posts, I miss a lot of images posted because my work firewall blocks Imgur, Facebook, and Instagram.

This, except not work related. Sometimes I suspect my ad blockers are unfriendly to the way thing are embedded. Usually it's a specific way imgur stuff is linked. I know some links cause adblocker ulitmate to say it blocked 20 references or more just by virtue of being embedding. I take the tradeoff.ImLawBoy wrote: Mon Feb 03, 2025 1:47 pm Are you having other Bluesky posts blocked, or just the one's he's posting? Since the bluesky addition, I always see BS embeds, although sometimes it takes like a microsecond to load, which as we all know, is forever in Internet webpage time.

I had this earlier on a few posts, but going back to that page shows them all normal now.

Re: New media handler
Yes - that. I went to get a screenshot but couldn't get it all on one page because I'm old and use 150% zoom in Chrome. When I returned to 100% to get the screenshot, the gap disappeared. I tried going back to 150% and the gap did not return until I reloaded the page at 150%. Weird.

Re: New media handler
Can confirm that changing zoom on Chrome gets rid of it until reload. And I'm fighting the need to increase zoom from 100%.

It's almost as if people are the problem.

It's broken for me in Firefox too. Using dark mode. Zoom change didn't fix.stessier wrote: Mon Feb 03, 2025 1:19 pm What is up with Izzy's posts like this one?
