I made it about 2/3rds of the way through that article before I realized it was a joke, for what that's worth.

But then, following through a link indicates that a bill like this came close to passing in Indiana back in 1897.

Romney is running! He formed an exploratory committee today that officially enables him to start fundraising.

Meanwhile, MA officials are holding 5th-anniversary celebrations for our health reform law (Romneycare), and making a great show of thanking Mitt for his role.

This is going to be a fun campaign season.

In another minor news item, DNC officials asked MA to delay its primary by a month in order to let the ultraconservative Republicans run in the most conservative states early on. By delaying states that will prefer moderate candidates like Romney, they might have a better chance to see Gingrich or Palin or Bachman or Trump run against Obama.

Sounds dubious to me, and the idea got a cool reception.

By cool reception you mean people didn't like it? I hope so. Because that is a really stupid idea. The parties will split the vote in the long run, gotta support the most reasonable people wherever you can.

And anyone in an election has a chance, crazy things happen all the time that cause people to drop out or suddenly lose support.

And our country would end up with these brilliant foreign policy chops:
DONALD TRUMP:
Let me just say something. There’s nobody more militaristic than me, but it’s also called attack the right target. Iran is going to take over Iraq, because we have de-neutered Iraq, you know that, in terms of their military. They’re gonna take them over very quickly as soon as we leave. If that’s gonna happen, they’re gonna take over the oil fields. The second biggest oil fields in the world. And if that’s gonna happen, I say we take over the oil fields…I would take over the oil fields, because otherwise, Iran is gonna take over the second biggest oil fields in the world. I would absolutely, without question, not leave that section of that country. I would take the oil. To the victor belong the spoils. You know, in the old days, you’d have a war. And you’d be in there. And you’d win. And you’d take over the country. Whether it’s oil or gold or whatever. You take over the country.

MEREDITH VIEIRA:
Okay. Are you saying if you were President, you would take us out of Afghanistan?

DONALD TRUMP:
Well, nothing’s simple. Because I don’t believe in foot soldiers. They get blown up on streets. But I do believe in airplanes that are 50,000 feet up. And when we see through intelligence what’s going on, knock the hell out. Oh, by the way, I’m much more militaristic than Obama. He got the Nobel Peace Prize, but, you know, I think they’re probably rethinking that one, every time he seizes a country. The problem is he seizes countries, but he doesn’t win….I’m not gonna have soldiers walking down on the street and get blown up and get shot at by snipers and killed, so we have to call the parents and say, "Your son was just killed on a street in Afghanistan." But those people will have a lot more problems with me than they’re having right now. But I do it through the air and we’re not gonna have casualties.
Gambling with the future of the country is a bad idea guys. Cut it out.

You probably don't care much for this either:
PPP's newest national poll finds that after a little more than 3 months in charge House Republicans have fallen so far out of favor with the American public that it's entirely possible Democrats could take control of the House back next year.
But they do make the point that the 2010 redistricting will probably preserve the gains R's made...

I'm kind of torn, actually. I prefer a divided Presidency/Congress, to reduce the amount of things they do. But the Republicans have started to push the social issues a bit much for my taste. They might need a bitch-slap.

The question is where it will be in a year and a half.
We're still fighting all over the place,
This is true. OTOH, especially with Libya, Obama is showing differences from his predecessor - less involvement, but also more muddled articulation of why we're fighting and what our goal is.
spending money like drunken sailors.
Yes. While I approved the original spending to help the economy recover under Bush, IIRC, the problem was less critical when Obama entered office, and IIRC a lot of spending didn't go to what was promised (eg, infrastructure). Though, IIRC, some of the money spent was paid back.

OTOH, I trust the Republicans even less with the purse strings.
Obamacare is highly unpopular.
IIRC, when you took apart those who didn't support Obamacare because it didn't go far enough, with the people who supported it, there was a slight edge for those who supported it and those who didn't think it went far enough to those who opposed it.

Personally, as someone who wasn't very supportive of healthcare reform, I'm currently in an undecided wait-and-see state, myself.

Most of his domestic agenda has been incoherent or stalled. He's broken most of his promises about transparency, about civil liberties, about the War on Terror, etc.
Yes I've got a number of issues with him (some where he's too far to the left for my tastes, and others where he's too far to the right.)
He's increasingly unpopular.
Eh? His approval rating has been steady at about 50/50 for the last year or so (which is higher than some two termers and lower than some one termers according to an article I linked a while back)

Real estate mogul Donald Trump suggested in an interview Monday that President Barack Obama had been a poor student who did not deserve to be admitted to the Ivy League universities he attended. Trump, who is mulling a bid for the Republican presidential nomination, offered no proof for his claim but said he would continue to press the matter as he has the legitimacy of the president's birth certificate.

"I heard he was a terrible student, terrible. How does a bad student go to Columbia and then to Harvard?" Trump said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I'm thinking about it, I'm certainly looking into it. Let him show his records."

Seeing as how Obama is a moderate Republican (see also Ezra Klein's article), this isn't surprising...

As said earlier though, I don't see Trump running. He's in it for the publicity.

Yeah, though the 'Moderate Republican' from the early 90's has been washed away with Fox News, IMHO. I believe Fox has had that large of an effect on the Political spectrum.
