I only get 1 colonist, right?

I'll put my new colonist in my indigo plantation.

If I understand correctly:

I craftsman for + 1 dubloon:

LordMortis: +1 Corn +1 Indigo
Qantaga: +1 Sugar
El Guapo: +1 Indigo
Newcastle: +1 Tobacco
Chaosraven: +1 Corn +1 Sugar
LordMortis: +1 Indigo

If we need to actually go around for this that's fine too. Either way the action is on Qantaga, to take is sugar or to choose his role.

No, I have my indigo plantation but not mill manned, so I wouldn't get indigo (or any other resource). I have my two dudes on the plantation and on the quarry. Thought about manning up the indigo production, but decided to have the quarry available instead.

If I can't get through then I suppose we just to the full go around (remembering that I will get last action and the only real choice for the role)

I craftsman for + 1 dubloon +1 Corn +1 Indigo

craftsman to qantaga

On to El Guapo.

You should get Sugar for 2 Doubloons +1 for Trader Role +1 for the coin sitting on the role.

It's still a good play. Just don't short yourself a coin. :D

I have nothing to sell, I believe. El Guapo sells his tasteful jewelry to tourists, earning no doubloons.

Yep.

And while we wait to find out if chaosraven sells his corn for 0 I will also sell Indigo for 1.

Thinking...

While I'm doing so, here's another question:

Grund's "Gentle Introduction" thread says, "Short Beige Buildings (two of each on the Bank Board)." By two of each on the Bank Board, I'm surmising that means that there are no more small warehouses available, correct?

Qantaga wrote:I'm surmising that means that there are no more small warehouses available, correct?
Correct.

And only one hospice
And only one Tabbaco Storage.

The rest are the same as in Grund's last update.

http://octopusoverlords.com/forum/viewt ... 1#p1867071" target="_blank

Bearing in mind that you are comparatively rich at 6 doubloons, you may want to wait for Grund's update to buy. For instance if a bunch of Coffee shows up you may want to go for the roaster, being the only person in a position to actively pursue coffee. Feel free to ignore the kibbitz. But thinking is good right now. With money in hand now is the time start choosing the direction you want to actively pursue.

That's good advice. Thanks.

I'm trying to think through it, but not having played before, I'm not sure if I'm looking at the shiniest buildings or the more practical ones.

I think I will wait for Grund to show the new plantations before deciding.

A peer into my brain with your position says:

Strategically, you're looking at us and trying to figure out what we are doing while trying to make that work in to your plan. Essentially there are two paths to victory. Getting to both is the big bonus but rarely works. 1) Start shipping and collecting victory chits. 2) Start building a source of income and build your way to victory. Buying a coffee roaster is making a statement that you intend to buy your victory. It says that you will be seeking to trade to build cash. This would be reinforced later by building something like a hacienda to start settling with quarries before concentrating more regularly on the larger buildings. Otherwise, I'm taking my money and trying to find a way to store goods. With the small warehouses gone I probably go for the large warehouse. Then I start looking for corn or indigo whenever I can find it.

Again feel free to ignore the way I see things. That's just how I think and I think it's got to be hard to see an abstract game through further abstraction of a forum.

The strategic thoughts are helpful to me too as a new player - it is as you say a bit odd to try to figure this out through a forum. So any strategic thoughts (or a "just FYI, that move is pretty dumb") are appreciated. :D

I'm too sloppy to pay attention. :( Otherwise I would have warned Q to put colonist on Corn and you to start producing indigo or (even if your producing indigo would have cost me the trade that I got to make.)

From my seat:

This is largely a learning a game for every one but CR and myself and CR is sitting in the "Lordmortis, I can fuck you at every turn and I intend to" seat, so it's going to be even more of learning game, even for me. That is to say the person who goes before you largely holds your destiny in his hands. I can tell you strategically exactly how he's crippling but he would call it whining. ;)

Looking at how raven cripples me and how I react to it is you should look to the person who goes before you. It is strategically my job to screw Qantaga... which I am already unable to begin to do as chaosraven has been too effective in screwing me. OTOH, I had the windfall of EG lack of production. That extra doubloon allowed me to get a hospice. However, the hospice tips my hand and suggests the I will seeking a victory based on shipping and I will never Mayor.

I was thinking about the indigo production, but then I knew almost for sure that I wanted to build, and without knowing whether we'd produce and sell this turn, I basically could get 1 guaranteed doubloon by manning my quarry, vs. maybe 1 doubloon via producing and selling indigo. Though I would've wounded up denying you the 1 doubloon, as you note.

If it doesn't hurt your forward movement, as a rule of thumb, I personally would want to have the same resources as the guy who goes after you. It gives you the best chance at trading and allows you to fill ships before the other guy. As corollary to this I actively avoid taking the same resources as the guy who goes before me. Much in the way supreme nozzle, chaosraven took my sugar and avoided your tobacco and then next turn took my corn.
