Ahh, a modification on the sextortion scam.
After getting a few of these, they stop becoming effective once you notice the pattern. I even got one at one time that was supposed to include a bitcoin key and a compromised password, but ended up not including either, which hilariously enough meant they had only done half their job.

I only ever seem to get notices that there has been suspicious activity on my bank accounts with major banks that I don't have accounts with, except on my phone. I'm always getting texts about problems with my USPS package being held up.

Oh, yeah. I get the "USPS has your package but doesn't know where to deliver it" message every five or six weeks.LordMortis wrote: Tue Dec 10, 2024 7:44 pm I only ever seem to get notices that there has been suspicious activity on my bank accounts with major banks that I don't have accounts with, except on my phone. Sure, USPS somehow has my phone number but not my address. And the sender is usually someone like whowhatATwhatevers.com.

Re: [Scams] Random Scamdomness
I've gotten several "You've got a money request" scam emails from PayPal the last couple of weeks. It's always from a different name, and the amount varies. The devious part about those is that the email itself is actually from PayPal (so it gets past every filter and is flagged as "trusted sender"). But the invoice isn't actually directed at my PayPal user, otherwise the top line that says "Hello blah blah blah" would have my name instead of the gibberish email address (and there's a different scam that does involve fraudulent invoices sent to your PayPal but then you'd be able to see them in your account).
The key is that they want you to call the number that they list in the notes hoping that it appears as an official PayPal fraud warning (it's always a different number, too). Obviously if one were to call this number, they'd be talking to the scammers, not PayPal.

I haven't used Paypal in a decade. Zelle seems to work fine, and you don't have to use a credit card.

This was a new one. I got a text reminding about an appointment I don't have with "Kyla Wales Beard and Blade" through Square. I deleted it and then a half hour later I get "a receipt" from an unknown website. And this is why I don't have any sort of wallets or payment funnels through larger services beyond paypal or my CC.

Re: [Scams] Random Scamdomness
I am suddenly getting a ton of scam texts. Several a day. AFAICT they are all coming from the Philippines. So my only logical conclusion is blame JeffV. I'm also seeing an uptick is spam email. So I guess there might have been a flood of sales of my data, which would literally be everything about me nowadays. What I don't get is, why if they know everything about me, don't they make their contacts more personalized. With what they use, they can get by google searching my name. Or maybe it's just a coincidence that I'm getting a flood of nonsense in text and email formats at the same time that are breaking through spam filters (and I don't know how. I mean, AI is supposed to be this great savior and these texts and emails are obvious, even if you don't count poor writing skills in a professional contact, such as flood of the same text of unidentified packages from an unidentified shipper to an unidentified recipient at an unidentified location claiming incorrect contact data with a sense of urgency associating itself with the USPS and using a USPS knock of site and being sent from a foreign county. Your realtime spam filter algorithms haven't figured this one out yet after how long?)

Re: [Scams] Random Scamdomness
A few weeks ago I was having fun playing along with a scammer until he finally figured it out.
Then we started having a insult war.
I was really laying into him and his whole family, when he started reeling off personal info about me, like my name, my address, my family info.
I'm assuming that's all public knowledge, but it was weird hearing it all come from a complete stranger.
Of course, that just made me go that much harder at him until he finally had enough and hung up on me.

This is new to me. I'm getting spamdom scamdomness for my tax forms being available. Some are actually from where I have accounts and look like the real thing, except for the email and embedded links. My email provider really needs to get better about sorting these things. To be fair, I don't think that anyone has much that they can do about outside people spoofing them to scam people. Other than email blasts warning about potential scams but even then there'd have to be enough of them to warrant it.LordMortis wrote: Fri Jan 31, 2025 9:45 am This is new to me. I have an AI "girl" who is trying to catfish me on Bluesky. I am playing along waiting for the hammer to drop (apparently it is a crypto scam as "she" has brought up the topic of crypto 3 times). My strategy is to keep insisting we meet in person. If AI can produce a flesh and blood meetup I will be impressed.

Re: [Scams] Random Scamdomness
So an interesting conversation today. "She" sent me a picture of a plate of food and said she and her friend were enjoying a steak lunch.Jaymann wrote: Mon Feb 03, 2025 5:12 pm I have an AI "girl" who is trying to catfish me on Bluesky. Me: Where did you get that?
She evaded with: We are at an outside restaurant.
Me: Is your friend male or female?
She: All my friends are female except for some business associates.
Me: Can you send me a picture of the two of you having lunch together.
Now an actual human could and would do this in a heartbeat. But I got radio silence for 10-15 minutes. I am speculating possible human intervention.
She: We are outside now. You want a picture of my girlfriend lol.
Me: The two of you in front of the restaurant would be great.
A couple minutes later I got a picture of her and a nearly identical girl where you couldn't see the background except for a portion of a waterfall in the corner.
She: Here is my girlfriend, isn't she beautiful?
Me: Yes, tell her I said hi.
She: We're going shopping now.
So, almost plausible deniability, but definitely a stress test. I have some other tricks up my sleeve, so stay tuned.

Don't ask for the money though. In fact refuse at first if she offers to help.

Maybe let her in on your secret inheritance tgat is being held up by lawyers waiting for their cut and if you could just save ip $5000 to pay them their fee you'll have $200,000 available to invest so she'll just have to wait.
Don't ask for the money though. In fact refuse at first if she offers to help.

Re: [Scams] Random Scamdomness
One of the big current scams in Florida is a text message being sent to pretty much everyone telling them that they have outstanding charges on their Sunpass account, which is a highway toll system. The message wants you to click a link to go pay up your account. I knew this was a scam because 1) Sunpass doesn't have my phone number, 2) Sunpass only contacts you by email and 3) I keep track of my Sunpass spending and so I know I don't owe money.
One might figure that this scam is aimed at older folks who are less text savvy, but I found out that one of the two thirty-somethings working on my back porch got taken in and is now at the bank trying to get a new credit card, or so says his partner, who mentioned that he almost got taken in on the same scam.
I am very grateful that my wife doesn't have a smart phone nor has any interest in having one

That's all over the place. My wife gets those all the time (for IPass in Illinois) and I've seen others complaining on social media. I'm guessing any state with toll roads is getting those.
That's my purse! I don't know you!

I get these text messages from the "HR department" offering me some work at home marketing BS. One comical aspect is the email address is always something stupid like billybob86@hotmail.com. They go into a lot of detail, but I immediately block and report as spam. I do wonder how they plan to get money from you (maybe pay for "training"?) but do not care enough to find out. Maybe it is as simple as selling your number as being gullible.

Most of those are fake check scams. They tell you that they are sending you a "digital check" to buy computer equipment from their approved vendor. You deposit the check, send the payment - the "approved vendor" is just another one of their websites so they get your money. In a couple of weeks the bank reverses the deposit because the check was fraudulent, and you are out whatever money you sent the scammers.Jaymann wrote: Fri Mar 14, 2025 4:56 pm I get these text messages from the "HR department" offering me some work at home marketing BS. I started getting them; and there is no toll road near me, and it's coming from a European phone number...ImLawBoy wrote: Fri Mar 14, 2025 2:27 pm That's all over the place. The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

As far as I know the only toll roads we have are bridges run by private equity. I get those text all of the time. They surpassed the USPS package can't be delivered because of incorrect information texts some time ago. And while not specifically a scam, I get several spam texts a week, every week, offering to buy my house, knowing full well this area never recovered from housing crash and that they want to get in on this area dominated by government subsidized slumlord rental properties (which is precisely why this area never recovered from the housing crash, as no home owner wants to live next to housing with the bare minimum upkeep by landlords and tenants who have no regard for their neighborhood. Talk about a scam. Man, am I broken record.)
