90% of the panic over "depopulation" is about white Western populations. More generous immigration solves most of the projected problems, but it would have the effect of making America and Europe somewhat less pale.GreenGoo wrote: Fri Jan 24, 2025 6:38 pm I just want to mention that the only valid reason that I am aware of for increasing population is economic. Even if global population (yes, I realize the tweet was Chile specifically) were in decline, we are not in danger of running out of human beings any time soon.

TBH, the SF was based on food production issues, which managed to get dramatically better in the 60s, but famine had been on the increase.GreenGoo wrote:I just want to mention that the only valid reason that I am aware of for increasing population is economic. Science fiction from the 60's often speak about the outrageous over population of Earth at 6 billion people. Which I find fascinating.

Most of the 8 billion people alive today enjoy a higher standard of living than did most of the 3 billion alive in 1960. The poverty and food shortages that still plague so many today have social/political/religious origins, rather than real resource scarcity.Pyperkub wrote: Fri Jan 24, 2025 10:49 pmTBH, the SF was based on food production issues, which managed to get dramatically better in the 60s, but famine had been on the increase.GreenGoo wrote:I just want to mention that the only valid reason that I am aware of for increasing population is economic. I'm not arguing in favor of ever-increasing population, btw.

You can't have more people! You're not taking care of the ones you have at home!
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Per the article, we also have some other associated issues with how food production changed. Specifically, obesity and nutrition issues. (as well as the ones you mentioned).Kraken wrote:Most of the 8 billion people alive today enjoy a higher standard of living than did most of the 3 billion alive in 1960.
