ImLawBoy wrote: Wed May 22, 2024 10:22 am I was reading that the GameStop thing is just more conspiracy stuff. Apparently conspiracy theorists are insisting that "globalists" are artificially keeping GameStop low and if they stopped manipulating the market the stock would take off (or something like that - I don't have the desire to explore this any further). Seems like it's more likely to siphon off Trump voters than Biden, so I'm all for it.
It's the ages old excuse about why given stock isn't making someone rich. They blame "shorts" and "market manipulators" for keeping the artificially stock low through illegal or globalist or deep state practices. For the ringleaders it's just an attempt to make money on a short squeeze (pretty much doing exactly what they're complaining about). For the sheep, it becomes a cult. And this being 2024, of course, it's a cult x 10 that brings in politics.

Wasn't the GameStop meme-stock run just a joke the participants were having?

I mean, in a world where almost no one buys physical game media any more, how could GameStop continue to be profitable? What did they think would happen when the narrative moved on?

I saw a documentary on it, and while it started as a middle finger to wall street, some people actually made out big time while some hedge funds who insisted on shorting the stock lost their shirts. It was a great illustration that monetary value of stock has nothing to do with intrinsic value.

Here is RFK Jr hanging out with deeply crazy Roseanne Barr and explaining how he staged a roadkill bear in Central Park in an effort to evade responsibility for it.

The video is filmed with filters, presumably to make everyone look less weird.

I love how he blames it on drinking too much, "but of course - not him drinking" - just all the people he was with.

Didn't we just see a few days ago RFK would drop out and join Harris if she gave him a position? Like that would ever happen for a vac skeptic. What a fuckin' set of tools. And yeah, every one has known all along you were pulling your brand of nuts from the TFG squirrelly nest.

It's understandable. Most Conservatives nowadays are essentially wanna-be influencers, content creators selling click bait for cash and attention.

This goes a bit more into it.
the mediocrities and opportunists who identified his rancid charisma as their own tickets to ride, know that they can only ever and always do more. This is the nature of this type of content-creation gig, which can never turn off or calm down, but also this is the dead end that conservative politics was steering towards long before Trump took the wheel. A politics whose most fundamental idea is Make Progress Stop Happening would inevitably find itself fetishizing the torment of having to live in a world in which other people, who are not even you, are somehow supposed to matter just as much.
There's a reason they keep trying to prop up famous people as policy-makers.

John Oliver did an RFK Jr. story a couple of weeks ago. Not that he said much of anything that we didn't already know but figured it just belongs in this thread for posterity.

And it’s carefully timed to come out as the DNC is on! It’s such a coincidence it’s as transparent as hepcats couch gags.

You have to wonder what was promised that will never be delivered. I know others saw him pulling votes from Harris (or more probably Biden) but I never saw it. Neither Biden nor Harris go in a bowl of mixed nuts.

That's certainly going to give trump a bump, but Harris was already looking good in one-on-one polls. It makes the hill a bit steeper, no doubt.

As expected, Kennedy shamed the family name by endorsing TFG. The pundits' reactions are mostly "eh, whatever." RFK drew voters who didn't like either party, and those who bother to vote at all aren't all going to flock to the fascists.

Harris should start suggesting that this means Trump is offering weirdo RFK a cabinet post or other leadership position.

RFK's reputation is bad enough that Trump will either have to deny it (diluting gains from the endorsement) or accrue additional points in Weird.

She shouldn't but one of those independent PACs sure should.
