Brennan struggled with drugs and alcohol throughout his life, last being arrested in 2020 on a second-degree trespassing charge after refusing to leave a hotel while intoxicated. A 2010 car crash left Brennan with brain trauma.

The week before mothers' day we were down at my mom's house, watching some game show from the early 1980s that included the St Elsewhere cast. I looked up Norman on IMDB and said "holy shit, that dude's 106 now and still kicking".

Silver, a chemist from Texas, created the adhesive that gives Post-it Notes their stickiness. It took years for his colleague Art Fry to realize the specific genius of Silver's invention. Silver, who earned 37 patents while at 3M and was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for his achievements, died this month at age 80, 3M confirmed. He's survived by his wife, Linda, his daughter, Jennifer, his two grandchildren and the sticky notes that litter our lives.

Veteran space journalist Jay Barbree, who covered more than 160 missions, dies at 87

Space journalist Jay Barbree died Friday in Florida. The veteran NBC News correspondent was 87.

Barbree began covering NASA in 1957 when the space agency was struggling with a series of humiliating rocket explosions.

In 1958, Barbree joined NBC News and began a storied career that would span 61 years.

He went on to cover every human space mission to leave U.S. soil, beginning with Alan Shepherd’s Freedom 7 flight in 1961, until the last space shuttle mission in 2011.

In all, Barbree reported on 166 human spaceflight missions.

Kid reporter who interviewed Obama at White House dies at 23

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The student reporter who gained national acclaim when he interviewed President Barack Obama at the White House in 2009 has died of natural causes, his family says.

Damon Weaver was 23 when he died May 1, his sister, Candace Hardy, told the Palm Beach Post. Further details were not released. He had been studying communications at Albany State University in Georgia.

Weaver was 11 when he interviewed Obama for 10 minutes in the Diplomatic Room on Aug. 13, 2009, asking questions that focused primarily on education. He covered school lunches, bullying, conflict resolution and how to succeed.

Weaver then asked Obama to be his “homeboy,” saying then-Vice President Joe Biden had already accepted.

“Absolutely,” a smiling Obama said, shaking the boy's hand.

He used that meeting to later interview Oprah Winfrey and athletes like Dwyane Wade.

“He was just a nice person, genuine, very intelligent,” Hardy said. “Very outspoken, outgoing. He never said no to anybody.”

I don't know anything about this particular guy, but a lot of people who defend criminals do so because they believe in justice and know that it is vital - despite the hatred they get, and despite the emotional toll of trying to keep terrible people out of jail.

Some also game the system to get guilty people off on technicalities. Which... may also be necessary? Or may just be scummy? I don't know. I'm glad it isn't my job to decide how far to go.

But that's the point of his question. If a guilty person doesn't get representation, then the American legal system falls apart. Criminals have human rights, too. If you value things like freedom from unreasonable search and seizure, then you should value criminal defense lawyers who defend the guilty. If you think that someone arrested for (and yes, guilty of) minor possession should not by default get the maximum sentence, then you should value criminal defense lawyers who defend the guilty. What about someone who killed another person and the prosecution is going for premeditated murder, but the crime wasn't actually premeditated? The accused in that case is guilty of something, but not necessarily what he's been charged with. You need a criminal defense lawyer who is willing to defend the guilty to advocate for that person.

I have zero issue with someone defending the worst of the worst. That's how the legal system works and the ability to protect even the guilty is good for us all. Everyone deserves a defense. Everyone.
