Ashamed and saddened that part of the Jewish community has fallen into the death cult idiocy.

Hundreds of members of Brooklyn's Orthodox community stormed the streets and synagogues of Borough Park on Tuesday night to protest new coronavirus restrictions imposed by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Pledging "war" on officials and public health guidance, demonstrators clad in black religious garb set fires along 13th Avenue and tossed masks into the flames. They chased away NYC Sheriff's Deputies while shouting "Jewish Lives Matter," video shows, and attacked a photojournalist attempting to capture the scene.

Another Orthodox man, who'd opposed the anti-mask crowd, was deemed a "snitch" and reportedly hospitalized after a mob of protesters beat him with rocks. His brother, Mordy Getz, told Gothamist that he was "severely" injured and knocked unconscious, but was doing better as of Wednesday morning.

That community in particular doesn't surprise me. They are good people but insular. The same thing is happening in Lakewood, NJ. I think those communities are taking the restrictions personally when in reality they just have more infection because of the recent holidays.

Something similar has been happening in Israel.

Police have been using Covid lockdown regulations as a pretext for cracking down hard on anti-Netanyahu protesters. They've all but ignored huge gatherings of ultra-Orthodox protesting the lockdown itself.

That's really awesome. With a background (and skill) in epidemiology the world is her oyster. Doubly awesome that she's found a focus and a group that is looking for her skills. That's what's amazing to me about what is arguably one of the lowest points of American culture/society in the last 100+ years. Right now there are people thinking about or hearing about public health for the first time and making connections they never realized before. There are high school and college students suddenly interested in topics they'd never considered and I strongly suspect we're going to go through a public health boom when this is all over because of it. She's at a great place in history (even if it doesn't feel like it at the moment) because professionally I'm picking up on the tone that my national organizations are sending - change is coming.

I saw the NYC protests on my local news last night and it was a genuine WTF moment for me. Not so much the protesting but the waving of Trump signs. I'll fully admit ignorance on the details, but I was surprised to see support for Trump.

There are 8 million people in NYC, and more in the area. A small minority of Trump supporters in NYC is still a fairly large group.

I get that, I just didn't think the Venn diagram of Orthodox Judaism and Trump Supporter would actually overlap. I mean, I didn't expect them to be carrying Biden/Harris signs, I was more surprised to see them carrying any type of political candidate signs at all. Again, it could be my general ignorance of the tenants of their belief, but i just didn't think they'd be Trump supporters.

Fun Smoove_B fact - many moons ago I was tasked with inspecting the kitchen of a famous Rabbinical college. It was easily Top 5 worst kitchens I've ever been in. Someday when I write a book, I am pretty sure I could flesh out an entire chapter. It was horrific!

Different Orthodox Jewish sects in NYC vote differently, but the most conservative of them do a lot towards turning the red parts of Brooklyn red.

But obviously Staten Island needs to be hauled out to sea and sunk.

Ultra-Orthodox lean conservative (Modern Orthodox, by comparison, I would describe as politically moderate). They have been persuadable in the past (Clinton got support of some of the Ultraorthodox communities during her Senate and Presidential runs by reaching out to them, IIRC).

That said, while they are insular, they have been having issues with anti-vaxxer propaganda getting through to them and spreading (which caused measles outbreaks), and I wouldn't be surprised if some other right-wing/trump propaganda has gotten through too. In addition, they feel personally attacked by the lockdowns when they ignored or were ignorant of the threat the virus posed, and they blame Democrats for that.

My father's side of the family, Syrian Jews mostly living in NYC, are all big Trump supporters. Mostly, I think, because they believe Trump is super pro-Israel (see the embassy move), but also probably because a lot of them are pretty well off.

Maybe. Although many militias like to tout their "minority" members to show that all races hate the imposition of tyranny by the forced wearing of masks. Truly, this shitshow is the gift that keeps on giving!

Apparently there are some strong rumors flying around that Pence is now positive. There was some chatter after he suddenly cancelled a trip this afternoon. However, this also could just be noise around a publishing mistake. Deadline jumped without confirmation and published an article this afternoon claiming he was positive. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Unless it has specific details, that could easily just be the equivalent of preparing an obit or an election story before the fact. They do this all the time.

I once saw a collection of decades worth of partially completed "Ford/Mondale/Gore/McCain/etc Wins the Presidency" stories (along with other unrealized possibilities) that were prepared just in case but of course never ran.

Buzzfeed News says it wasn't green screen. Their evidence is the word of the WH and digital video experts who say it was compression artifacts. Plausible but how did he do this in broad daylight and no one saw it happen? There are reporters all over the place watching for movement. They have cameras trained all day on the residence and the Oval.
