It isn't so much that they sold us stuff that was coming a year later that bugs me, it is that they sold us stuff as backers, told us they couldn't afford to ship it to us, and then sold the items they promised us at retail. That seems like "hey, thanks for investing in us... um, you didn't expect a return on your investment did you?"

I just got a copy of Shadows of Malice and the expansion. I can't believe nobody here is talking about this game. I have yet to play it, but it looks like it is going to scratch a D&D itch like no other. And it is easily soloable!

Hepcat talked up Shadow of Malice last year and we played at GenCon. Fun but fiddly co-op.

I must have missed it! So far it looks interesting. I can see where there might be a little fiddly elements, but in comparison to - since we are talking about it - SoB, it seems downright straightforward!

I love Shadows of Malice. It's a minimalist approach to an RPG board game that manages to be thematic and at the same time abstract. There are a few rules' tweaks you can find on bgg that will help with some of the fiddly aspects of combat. My favorite is a one time roll for effects that would normally require a roll for every combat phase. You'll see what I mean the first time you have to fight a baddie.

The best conceit of the game is that monsters are built from scratch each time they're encountered. Put on your old D&D hat and imagine what you're fighting based on the description. Not that you have a choice though. The game has very little art.

Shit ton of Magic tonight at kenetickids.

We did a cube draft, played a couple games.
Did a cube draft with Vanguard cards, played a couple games.
Played half a dozen Commander games.
Finished out by playing Modern decks with Planechase a few times.

I've played it and own it. For me... It isn't my favorite. The moats are ok, but they kind of break the synergy of the rooms. Outdoor rooms no longer really give a bonus with them. The secret passages are a cool idea, but hard for new players to grasp and they can really swing the game. The swans are even weaker. They just seem like such a random addition. If you're into set collection then they're ok.

Now I've only played the expansion a couple of times and I wasn't bored of the base game yet. So for me at this point I won't be adding the expansion to games, not even one of the modules. Maybe if I'm eventually bored of the base game I will, but I'm not there yet.

It has another issue too. It add complexity to the set up. I like to limit set up in games (I even have the broken token organizer for castles to limit set up) and expansions that require special set up every time are not my favorite.

So the modules don't add anything terribly interesting in my opinion while unnecessarily complicating the game. If you're getting bored of the base game the variety might be nice, but if you're not, it doesn't add much in my opinion. Now my friend I played it with really enjoyed it so it could just be my opinion.

I like expansions but I like expansions that don't detract from the base, add interesting variety, and don't heavily complicate set up.
Thanks for the impressions. Castles is still pretty new for my group, so I'll hold off on the expansion. We can always get it later if we're getting better bored with the base game.

Thanks to an early birthday present from my sister, I now own Castles the Mad King Ludwig. After a couple of 2-player games and couple of games playing the solo variant, I like-but-don't-love it. The building and overall systems are great, I just wish that the rules allowed for more turns and thus larger, crazier castles. I may try increasing the size of the starting room deck and seeing how that goes.

Well I should let you know I tried the expansion again today. After writing my impressions I wanted to give it another try. And my conclusion is- it still isn't necessary. That being said I have decided to use the new room pieces. But rather than do the variant set-up I'm going to instead just mix the pieces in and use them. The thing is the different set-up is only important if you are using the swan collection pieces. That for me is by far the weakest part of the new expansion. It is mostly pointless, and it adds an extra layer of complexity to set-up that just doesn't pay off in terms of fun. But if you get rid of the swans, the expansion isn't any harder to set up, and it isn't really that much more complicated. So I will say it can be used without needing to have it be more complicated. The problem is that you simply don't need it for the game to be any more fun. Now since I own it I'll probably leave the moats in most of the time and occasionally add the secret passages, but otherwise it is missable. Some games just don't really need expansions.

Yeah I've done that a few times. It doesn't make the game any worse, just longer with higher scores and bigger castles, so if that's your thing I say go for it.
I just put together the broken token insert for it. Makes set up a bit quicker. I'm a big fan of broken token inserts. Also picked up the insert for Lords of Waterdeep which is fantastic.

I haven't tried the game solo or with just 2 players yet, but, not surprisingly, I think the more players you have the more fun the game is. The Master Builder aspect especially requires more strategy/contemplation when two or three people get to choose rooms before you go.

Made a pretty big trade and my stuff arrived Friday.

I got Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn, Dawn of the Zeds 2nd Edition, Serpent's Tongue (85 dollar KS version), and the one I am most excited about, Doomtown : Reloaded (the Premium Edition, plus all the expansions).

My oldest son and I played a game of Doomtown using just the core sets. Love the game. I can really see how much fun this game will be. Love the art, theme, mechanics....made me watch Rio Bravo this morning....

Ashes is such a great, great game. There are very few games I look forward to playing after a half dozen or so games. That's definitely one of them.

I wish Doomtown had been better received with the Chicago gang. But I can understand why it's not a favorite. It's a pretty deep game that has some confusing rules. But when you're playing it and you're invested in the deck building, it can be very rewarding.

Hep, in your opinion, what sets Ashes apart? I have not really gotten to it yet. I do love the art. Gorgeous looking game. Great components. I am really looking forward to getting into it.

Right now, though, I can't get Doomtown off my mind. Ricky Royal put out a solo variant that I think I will be checking out.

Dawn of the Zeds is a game I have been wanting. I had the chance to get it (it is also fully sleeved and has a Plano storage), so I jumped on it.

Serpent's Tongue just simply fascinates me. I may never actually be able to play it....but the game just looks so interesting.

Ashes is a fantastic combination of hand management and resource management. I thought it would be gimmicky, but the dice/resource pool really does add another factor to the decision making process...especially when trying to determine the best time to to end your round. It's a significant addition that feels organic to the mechanics, not shoe horned in.

Give it a go and I guarantee you'll end up loving it. :D

The only downside to Doomtown that I find distracting is that it usually ends up being a rush to the town square, then a shootout. Especially for the first half dozen or so games. You REALLY need to dedicate a significant chunk of time to learning the nuances if you want it to have any depth beyond that.

OO Boardgamers, what did you play this weekend?

Post by Zarathud »

Ashes has easy deck building with well designed cards. Quick build up of your tableau of spells. While you still need a good roll on the dice mana for maximum options, you can also control some randomness with spells and abilities so you don't get totally screwed.

It's also quick enough so you often get that itch for "just one more game."

Talon, the Starfleet Battles-like tactical game of starship battles from GMT, is currently number one on the BGG hotness list. I know that list is a bit suspect, but climbing all the way to the top still surprised me. It really is a fantastic game though. I highly recommend it.

Now a couple of life things are hitting (I am starting a new job on Monday). So we are now targeting beginning of May, probably the 3rd. Thank you all for your patience and support while we figure this out. Want to do it right!

Yeah, I don't think I would back a KS where the developer/publisher can't even get the logistics right to start the KS. I'll wait until retail.

I'd rather him get the logistics right before committing to a kickstarter. Given some of the kickstarter horror stories on here, I'm still willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Broke out my copy of Castles of Mad King Ludwig last night, and played a 2 player learn the rules game. I got demolished. I wasn't overly impressed with the 2 player version, but I can see how it would be a lot more fun with 3-4 players. Want to try it again with more.

And then we sat around and looked at my new Deep Cuts gaming mat and tried to figure out how we're going to get roads on it for Zenda. We settled on cork roads cut out of cork shelf liner. I'm going to get some tonight and see how it works.

Got all kinds of SFB rule books (2 versions even). Only actually played once with another human being, kept trying to set something up with my cousin, but we never really got passed picking out ships and setting up (spent too much time doing that rather than just trying a basic duel scenario). Also got the Federation and Empire campaign game (actually, got the first one they had that I forget the name of now, F&E, and F&E deluxe).

Eventually got into Starfire and the campaign system for that for 3rd edition and started looking some more.

Then I got married and didn't play any of these sort of games again since then.

Talon looks kinda cool from what I read on BGG. Good bit less detailed than SFB (which is probably good). Hope to find out someday.

Yeah, anniversary's that weekend. While coming the first time would probably result me being much freer to come in the future, the financial impact of the divorce would probably prevent it then.

But, I did talk to the spousal unit and she has agreed me coming sometime is not an unreasonable request. If I'm not on call for work when the fall one comes around and financial situation doesn't get any majorly huge setbacks, will shoot for that one this year. Shall keep an eye out for that. :horse:

Dadgum!

Just got a package out of the blue from my brother full of games he'd decided they'd already played enough at his house. The box contains:

Lords of Waterdeep
Othello
Eldritch Horror
Alvin and Dexter (Ticket to Ride expansion)
Flash Point Fire Rescue
Pandemic: The Cure
Splendor
Gravity Maze
Battle Line (I think he forgot he gave this one to us for Xmas a while back)
Slamwich
Rat-A-Tat-Cat
There's a Moose in the House

My kids will love these. Wish I had a bit more time to play with them.
No sig, must scream, etc.

We actually discussed that possibility, her coming/her and kid coming. But she's not a gamer and kid will play, but not "all day and all day". She figured she would run out of stuff to do long before I finished for the day and then be stuck sitting in the hotel room with nothing to do besides watch TV. She decided that would not work. I concurred (esp since she would likely just do a ton of shopping and probably find things to do that cost money (besides shopping) - would likely more than triple the cost, possibly quite a bit more).

Besides, would probably only get money/permission to go once per year (assuming after I come and meet you all once, you are willing to let me come back  ), much easier to do it in October than fight over doing it on anniversary.

OctoCon is nowhere near the heart of the City. It's out past the airport. My experience she would tool around and take in the city on down Lake Michigan ways and you either need to be native using mass transit or stay in one place, so I wouldn't recommend doing your own thing separately on opposite sides of the city. But that's me and my :x at taking 2 hours to get from one side of the city to the other during non peak traffic times.

I got to play two rounds of 4-player Cthulhu Wars yesterday. It really is a fun game that "fixes" some of my problems with CitOW. Best yet, it can be played in 2 hours or less, which is a huge bonus. The end of the game comes pretty quickly, once people have around 20-23 points and several elder signs, the end it pretty much going to happen. I got to play Cthulhu, who is not at all subtle and almost completely combat oriented (although I did not get the chance to fight as much as I wanted, due to learning curve) and then the Opener of the Way faction (Yog-Sothoth). I loved the Opener, because it was all about trickery and irritating the other players (he can summon to enemy controlled gates, can "bomb" enemies from afar, and he can abduct gates and move them around the map). It is quite a good game, with the feeling of Twilight Imperium in about 10% of the time it takes to play TI.

I broke out the buildings and got in about 8 hours of Dead Man's Hand. It was great, especially the second game, which was a stagecoach tearing through town trying to get to the train station before the train left the station. But some of the WORST die rolls I have ever seen. Absolutely need new dice for the game, I would estimate 85% of the rolls were below an 11 (number needed to hit). Makes for some long games.

Talon looks kinda cool from what I read on BGG. Good bit less detailed than SFB (which is probably good). Hope to find out someday.
Octocon in April. I'll bring my copy. :D

:horse:
Catch a ride with us or ThatSteveGuy. You can convince others along the 94 passage as well.
Zenn7 wrote:We actually discussed that possibility, her coming/her and kid coming.

Not sure where you all are, but I'd probably be more able to pick you up - I'm in northern Oakland county (by I75 between Flint and Pontiac. When it gets closer to then, maybe we can work something out, split some costs, let someone off the hook for driving.

We drive through Chicago on I94 every year (wife is from WI, all the in-laws are there). We are VERY familiar with that stretch of the drive and just how "fun" it is.

I got you confused with... I'm not sure who... I thought you were somewhere on that long stretch between Jackson and Grand Rapids. So yeah, come pick me up on the way. :D

Got to try out two of our new games this weekend.

Pandemic: The Cure felt pretty much like Pandemic, despite the completely different layout and play style. It was nice not having to deal with all the city cards, though the city cards I think had a bit of educational value for the kids. Good to know where major cities are around the world.

We also got to try out Lord of Waterdeep. What a great game. I was worried it would be another one where you spend two hours poring over the rules and two more figuring out where all the pieces go, but it really plays so easily and even my eight year old had no trouble keeping up with everything. I think we'll get plenty more play out of that one.
No sig, must scream, etc.

LoW is one of my all time favorite games. I don't get to play it nearly enough though. Might have to try and get it on the table at Octocon.

Out of curiosity, how is the iPad adaptation?
