Re: concerts....who you seeing?
If you've never been there, it's even smaller than you think, called Small's for a reason. It's an old bank converted in to a bar. The audience, sound board, stage, green room, and bathrooms are all contained in the area that used to be a vault. If they get 200 people, it will be packed. I was surprised the capacity was that high.Z-Corn wrote:That's a small joint...

It will be... intimate...
Eddie Spaghetti played here solo last year and only played to maybe fifty people. It was a good time.

Been meaning to see them for years and never have. Nowadays my back is in pain nearly constantly so I rarely go out, especially to places that don't have any seating at all.Fretmute wrote:Pinback is tonight. I love those guys.
Which reminds me. Saw Ra Ra Riot on Tuesday and live they may as well be a generic bar band. I couldn't hear the cellist at all of harmony and everything you hear from their recordings is drowned in generic electric sound. They had chairs, so that was alright. I have to figure out what I'm doing for Frightened Rabbit on the 30th. They have no seats at St Andrews Hall. Had the Blind Pig not had chairs, I'd have done before Ra Ra Riot took the stage.

Monday night is going to be Lindsay Stirling up at the Turner Hall in Milwaukee. My 13 year old daughter doesn't know we're going to be taking her. Her head is going to explode.

Gwar will be coming through in a couple weeks. I'm trying to decide if my interest in their stage antics can overcome my lack of interest in their actual music.

Re: concerts....who you seeing?
Did the Lindsay Stirling concert. That was a lot of fun. But I'm feeling the effects this morning. I'm too old to be standing around for 3 hours straight. And the DJ before hand? No thanks.
But Lindsay herself was great. I wasn't overly familiar with her, but thoroughly enjoyed the concert. Looked like she had a lot of fun, and was very energetic, and got the audience involved with the whole show. But I think my biggest enjoyment was watching my 13 year old daughter and her friend "air violin" through the whole show.

Re: concerts....who you seeing?
That's becoming more and more common and I've never had a good experience with it. I was speaking to someone who does sound engineering for live shows recently and he tells me they like booking DJs because DJs are compared to musicians. No equipment. No needs. No crew to support. Venues/promoters would do DJs all of the time if they could.hentzau wrote:And the DJ before hand? No thanks.
Really wanted to go this weekend. I just can't spend three or four hours standing any more and in a sold out venue it's be even worse on me. She seems to be rising star. I'm told she's fairly huge in belly dancing music circles now. So she's getting the tibal fan backing, the dubstep fan backing, and the kid backing going for her. I'm thinking this is her last bar tour and she moves on to small arenas and amphitheaters her next pass through. But Lindsay herself was great. I refuse to stand for three hours. I buy seats that make airline seats seem cushy, but at least in not having to stand the entire night. Also makes it easier to show up fashionably late, as I have no idea if there was an opening act for Stirling at my show.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Well, I didn't know that there were no seats when I purchased the tickets. I still rate the experience a very positive one, even though I'm paying for it today. Getting old sucks.Isgrimnur wrote:I refuse to stand for three hours. I buy seats that make airline seats seem cushy, but at least in not having to stand the entire night. Re: concerts....who you seeing?
I didn't know Stirling was Mormon. She's going to be here on the 29th, but there's no way I'm going to fight the insane crowd that I'm sure will turn out for her. (Mormon artists tend to get a little more attention than usual here in Salt Lake ) Especially since the venue she's at is pretty small to begin with.hentzau wrote:Did the Lindsay Stirling concert. I haven't. Thought about it a few times, but I'm not a fan of their music at all. I'd be going for the stage show only and can't decide if that would be worth the price of admission.Have you seen GWAR live skinypupy?

People who are becoming more interested in sitting down than they used to be also seem to tend to be less interested in being drenched in fake blood than they used to be.

I've seen GWAR on several occasions and the price of admission was always around $25. Stage show is worth that much.
I've never done the pit either, it's just massive and nuts. I try and hit their shows when I'm around.
Always a good night out.

Saw them Saturday night in Houston. This was my 13-year-old's first concert. You know bands like Pinback have to dig it when they see my 13-year-old and 15-year-old singing along with at least 10 years of their material. Pinback is an institution in my house.Fretmute wrote:Pinback is tonight. I love those guys.
I drove to see them in Austin a couple of years ago on a one-off concert. Those guys played for 2 hours straight that night. Saturday night was at least an hour forty.
edit: Checked the date. I guess we were at the same show.

Did you hate JP Inc as much as I did? That was, by far, the worst opening act I have ever seen.

If he would have been a week earlier, maybe. But last week I received Rodeo tickets (luxury box) to see Austin Mahone/Demi Lovato. Demi was an auteur, pure genius compared to that Mahone wank. I wanted to scratch my eardrums out.Fretmute wrote:

JP Inc was the worst opening act I've ever seen in a concert I bought tickets to though.

I need to be younger and healthier. They Might be Giants is tonight for under twenty dollars and it's 19:00 show, so I wouldn't even need to take tomorrow off to see it tonight but I just can't stay on my feet for three to five hours any more. Sucks bad.
On deck
3/22, Reverend Peyton. We'll see how I feel
3/30, Frightened Rabbit. No seats. I think I'm going to show up late and hope for the best for the evening.
4/4, Wavves. No idea what it will be like but I figure show up, there's limited seating at the bar in the back. If I'm miserable, go home.

Nope. It's not.Fretmute wrote:It's no seats and sold out here. Not a good combination.
I'm stunned it's not sold out here. $14 show. Weekend. They sold out a $10 show at a smaller venue about three years ago. They had crazy good word of mouth opening for Death Cab for Cutie not that long ago. Their new album is getting rave reviews. This town really is dead and now only ever goes for hip hop, Blue Collar metalish music, and Dub Step (or whatever the current electronic DJ fad is).
On the other hand, good for me. I hate crowds.

Don't say that. No seating and my back is in chronic pain. I am currently planning on skipping Wintersleep. I can't do five hours on my feet.Fretmute wrote:I'm mainly going for Wintersleep anyway.
Maybe it will be warm enough next for me to spend all time when performers aren't performing, sitting outside on a step in the smoking area.
I suggest listening FR enough ahead of time to formulate an opinion and be familiar enough with their work enough to see if you can get lost in it. They're performance is not the great positive feedback loop that makes live music the best and, IMO, if you don't already enjoy their music, you'll not be thrilled by their live performance, which is much more gruff, less refined, and not very first time listener friendly.

Woot! Lord Huron is coming to Lansing in June. These guys have me hooked. Buy their album and relax. You won't regret it. They come together like magic. I think there are two songs on the album that are near misses but the rest is gold.

I'm so terribly torn on seeing M&S. I'd love to see them but they're playing the Rose Garden. A basketball arena is way too big a venue for this sort of show.Isgrimnur wrote:Mumford and Sons tickets ordered. I should know the specifics on the Dave Matthews Band tickets on Friday.
On the other end of the spectrum Prince is doing two shows at The Roseland a very very (very!) small venue. Of course that decision is out of my hand because it sold out pretty much instantly.

I just got tix to see Bjork in Richmond (CA). $90 a ticket after fees , but I promised my wife when/if she came back through we wouldn't miss her. It's a fairly small venue, so it should be interesting.

Frightened Rabbit was great last weekend in spite of my back. I'm sorry Wintersleep didn't really do it for me so maybe FR won't do it for you.
Wavves, tonight. The Magic Stick has limited stools and a deck that may or may not be open tonight. No idea what their show is like but the Wings will be on in the back ground and the Stick has $3 beers, so even if I don't care for Wavves, a $10 cover won't seem abusive.
