Running around a planet, scanning flora and fauna to get rewards while looking for rare minerals...

...and muscle memory keeps kicking in and I try to melee boost.

Also, Bethesda still can't figure out how flashlights work. A flashlight in a dark area will light up the entire area due to reflected light, but the flashlight here creates a small circle of bright light in a field of pure black.

I had a ship hail me, wanted to talk. I won't even talk about what he said, but it had me laughing a lot.

I wish it was more like FO4 where the junk you picked up was made of stuff you could use for crafting. Like if you needed adhesive and had a roll of tape, you'd be good. I need some adhesive in Starfield so picked up some tape. Nope, I need something specifically called adhesive and I've yet to find any.

You'll soon get the knack of knowing which items are useful and which are junk. Probably the workbench that most folks will try first is the weapons bench. Go to it and bring up some of your weapons and see which materials you'll need for the upgrades. And you can also use a button noted at the bottom of the page to track those particular items needed for a mod. That will make it easier to detect which things you come across are useful.

Note that some mods require certain items to be researched and guess what, those need materials too . Again, you can figured them out. It might not hurt to maintain a scratch paper list as well.

Also note that certain research and mods require a skill from the skill page. Skill points are hard to come by so those research and mod items will probably be something you'll do down the road.

Finally, you don't really need to do research or mods anytime early on. I've got in over forty hours and I'm just now starting to mod some of my favorite weapons. As I think I said before, if you find yourself doing something that's not fun, stop doing it. There are plenty of other things to do.

Add me to the list of people who wish that one thing they'd carried over from the Fallout games is the ability to convert junk into crafting materials. I still haven't found a source of adhesive, but I've seen countless rolls of tape that Fallout has conditioned me to expect to be a rich source of adhesive.

Is there a way to review the aggregate results of planetary surveys? Since a lot of crafting materials are sourced by harvesting flora/fauna, it would be nice to have a database where you can see what you've discovered and where it is.

You should be able to go to places like Jameson Mercantile or Outland in New Atlantis and find most of the stuff you need. And check out the stores in other locations.

You can also get adhesive from plants, but I haven't tried that.

This game is so weird. Sometimes it looks absolutely stunning. Other times it looks like I'm playing something straight out of the PS3 era. Granted, I don't have a system that can run all the graphics bells and whistles (it defaulted to "High") but I'm kinda surprised how just...bland so much of it looks. Especially in the cities, which are remarkably dull. At least the two I've been to (New Atlantis and Cydonia? The one on Mars.)

The janky and stiff character models don't help that impression any, but I'll admit that part of that may just be me being spoiled from the excellent character work in BG3 and Final Fantasy XVI.

Anything plot related I would not consider “light”. It has to do with some unique random events in space.

I'm perfectly happy with the graphics, but then I've never been all that critical, it's really more the gameplay for me. Here's my graphics settings, which are the ones the game defaulted to. Honestly I never usually tinker with the settings at all on any game unless I'm really hurting in the frame rate department.

I'm disappointed as only about ten hours or so in the game I came across an Eclipse(sp?) ship on the ground in the middle of nowhere and captured it. Since it wasn't as good as mine I sold it for some profit, but now I realize I could have used that free ship as a basis to build my own new ship :(. And in the next 30+ hours I've yet to come across I ship I can steal or just fly away with. And I've even landed on planets hoping to come across one but no luck.

By the way, being a little tired of getting my ass handed to me on random encounters as I take off into space, I'm now setting game difficulty to Very Easy each time before I go into space and when going to other worlds, then switching it back to Normal when I land

Upgrade the Frontier. That's what I used the entire game despite getting all kinds of bigger, supposedly more powerful ships. The worst thing about it is the weak ass weapons it comes with. That's easy to fix.

Anytime you're on a planet or moon and you hear another ship landing (it happens a lot), look for it and if you find it you can steal it. At this point I'm 20 hours in and have 4 ships. None of which I've stolen, but there have been plenty I could have stolen if I wanted to.

Also, the Mantis mission should show up early in the game and it gives you a really good starter ship at the end of it. In addition completing the Ranger questline and becoming a ranger unlocks a really good ship with lots of storage and room for 5 crewmates.

I've been upgrading but I'm still a bit overwhelmed in combat if there are multiple opponents. I think my next step is to go with a strong particle beam as my only weapon so I don't have to keep smacking three keys over and over.

Thanks for that info, I didn't associate the noise with a landing. I'll look for them now.

I looked at the Mantis mission but haven't done it yet. Glad to know about the Ranger quest unlock. As Coop said a while back, there doesn't seem to be any reason to ever buy a ship

I hate when I do this...

I have it in my mind that I would like to start over with a couple of other choices for character creation.

I've hardly gotten anywhere in the story, as I've truly been just checking out things absurdly slowly (I've not even gone into the lodge yet) - So I won't really have lost all that much.

Question about crew mates...

Would it be safe to say that one is NOT going to play this game as a lone wolf? I sorta had that image stuck in my mind for things, and yet I'm getting the impression I shouldn't try that route for various reasons.

You could play it as a lone wolf if you really wanted to. HOWEVER, some of the main missions require NPCs to assist you. BUT, having a crew is actually a really good thing because their assigned skills get added to yours while you're in your ship.

I think by far my favorite thing about this game are the side quests and side stories. Most of them playout a little differently than you would expect and it keeps things interesting. I have found myself doing nothing but side quests for the past 10 hours or so and it's been a blast.

One of my favorites so far involved a ship in orbit over Paradiso. I won't ruin the story but it was pretty unique and it gave you several different options on how to handle the situation.

I just started last night and so far I'm having a blast with it. I do wish it had found a way to get rid of the loading screens and fly straight off planet like No Man's Sky, but it's a minor quibble. The times haven't been that bad from an SSD.

I did get brave and took all 3 optional Traits. I'm not reading any tips on the game, just trying to straight roleplay this one.

So if you were lone wolfing it…. what would you do when you run against the parts where you need NPC to help if you have zero crew?

That’s me as well. I’m totally blind to the game.

And I already think I should do something different.

Usually the NPCs don't become available to be in your crew until you finish their mission where they are required to help you. So technically they won't be a part of your crew when they are forced on you and your lone wolf play through would still be intact.

So far, there's been little (if any) difference in outcomes based on the decisions I make. I did one quest that involved helping an engineer and ultimately had to decide to side with her or the trade authority. I ran into this last night. I was yelling at the monitor, "IT WASN'T MINE! I WAS JUST HOLDING IT AFTER I KILLED THEM! I STOPPED A CRIMINAL!"

So I just paid the 800 credit fine and walked out a free man, then sold the ship.

Thanks for the tip! Even though I have 2x the creds to "build the perfect starter ship" a la the link from jztemple2 I didn't want to commit that much money - and plus I haven't captured another ship yet. So I just upgraded the Frontier to replace the lasers with particle beam weapons, removed the ballistics weapon (to save on energy) and upgraded the shields and engines. Plus I gave the Frontier a new paint job. I haven't run into any baddies yet with my upgraded Frontier but hopefully the new upgrades will let me take them down faster.

There will be times that the choice you make in a dialogue screen will make a difference. I've been quick saving before a dialogue and reloading to try the other approach. Many times there isn't a difference but crucially some times it makes a significant difference.

At 46 hours in I'm finally tired of the EPCOT music  so I've turned it off.

I just arrived at Akila and as I walk past the security guard, who I've walked past a dozen times before, he turns to me and starts talking about a couple of people and suddenly I have a new activity to complete some time.

I love this game :D

My limited experience with side quests has been similar, however
Spoiler:
So far, there's been little (if any) difference in outcomes based on the decisions I make. I did one quest that involved helping an engineer and ultimately had to decide to side with her or the trade authority. After I finished, I looked up the quest to see how it would have played out if I went in a different direction, and there was no difference at all. Nothing changed - the reward, the XP, the story impact - nothing. The idea that choices matter might just be an illusion and only important to your brain, not the actual game.
There will be times that the choice you make in a dialogue screen will make a difference. I've been quick saving before a dialogue and reloading to try the other approach. Many times there isn't a difference but crucially some times it makes a significant difference.
Also, if you have a companion, they may dislike some dialogue choices. If they dislike enough of them they might quit you, although I haven't seen that myself. Personally, I play my character as I was when I was working in real life. I try to be pleasant, helpful and give others credit. Of course, I do expect some credit(s) in return

Sorry, I seem to be chatty today

I'm at Akila and ran into a realtor. I did a save and bought a property and checked it out. Aside from having some place to decorate, is there some advantage to having an owned property? I didn't find any, but maybe I'm misunderstanding something.

This what you are looking for?

I lifted off from Akila and once in orbit I just started hailing each ship I saw and asked if they wanted to trade. This was actually the cargo offered from the very first ship.

Minor spoiler regarding a non-mission location in New Atlantis that's pretty cool...
Spoiler:
There's an elevator on the side of the Jemison Mercantile building, going around to the right of the front doors. You can go to The Well from there (which means it's pretty convenient from the spaceport). Also you can go up to promenade that take you to a great view of the waterfall :D

Unfortunately it doesn't lead anywhere, so it's a "one and done" place to visit.
