But I'm assuming it wasn't a Seal Team Six operation.

Sheesh, you far right folks are so easily scared that everyone's out to get you that you've probably hired someone to make sure there's no Ginsburg or Ocasio-Cortez under your bed or in your closet at night. Do you sleep with a Rush Limbaugh night light? You know, the one that's viagra blue?

In regards to the Governor's troubles, I'm thinking he mixed up his blackface appearances and that's why you had the change in apologies. And with a nickname like "Coonman" it may have been a running theme with this guy.

Part of the reason why Democrats are so universally calling for Northam to resign is that there's every political incentive for that. Northam would just get replaced by the Democratic Lt. Governor, and they'd rather have a governor running for reelection without a racism scandal than one running with one. It would be more divisive if he was going to be replaced by a Republican.

Yup, he really needs to do the "greatest good for the people of Virginia" thing and fall on his sword. Politics is optics and his mind-boggling reverse on day two kind of sealed his fate.

The Lt. Gov has his own issues to deal with.
RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax has “never assaulted anyone — ever — in any way, shape, or form,” his Chief of Staff and Communications Director wrote in a statement issued at about 3 a.m. Monday.

The statement was issued following the publication of a woman’s Facebook post about a sexual assault 15 years ago.

Bigleaguepolitics.com, the same website that broke the story about a racist photo appearing on Virginia Governor Ralph Northan’s medical school yearbook page, also published the story about the claim.
Fun times.

Yeah, we came *so close* to potentially having an interesting discussion topic on this. Like, if he'd stuck with his initial apology (which was pretty good, as political apologies go), I think it would have been interesting to discuss whether (given his contrition) he ought to resign or not. But his ridiculous about-face on this stuff I think makes it pretty much impossible to defend him.

Apparently the Washington Post had that story around the time of the inauguration last year, but after months of research, they couldn't verify it as true, so they didn't run it.

Of course, a far right wing blog site is gonna push out there anyway. Because why not.

Makes sense to uncork this now, insofar as Fairfax is reasonably likely to be governor soon, and it helps paint a picture of broader dysfunction / wrongdoing among Democrats.

Hopefully it's not true. The unequivocal denial combined with the Post declining to run with it are good signs in that respect.

I just used the post to highlight the concerns of the alt-right over their right to use shoe polish, cut holes in their pillow cases and I probably should add the use of tiki torches outside the usual use at an evening outdoors dinner party. They certainly have a hard time with all their worries.

As an aside, I think the alt right needs to work smarter, not harder. For example: if you're buying your tiki torch for a march on your right to keep racist monuments in public places, go the extra mile and buy torch fuel with citronella. That way, you're fighting for racist beliefs while fending off biting and stinging insects.

If Fairfax becomes Governor of Virginia because Northam decides to resign, he can run again in 2021 because he was not elected to the position originally.

But if Northam does not resign and serves out his term then he can not run again so the Dems would still be running a candidate without the scandal.

Yeah, I didn't know about the one consecutive term limit. But still, the Democrats don't have much reason to prefer having Northam as governor to Fairfax (unless the assault allegations against Fairfax get more legs, I suppose).

This also means that Northam doesn't have much incentive to resign, though. He couldn't run for reelection anyway, and if he resigns now he'll be more or less permanently in disgrace, whereas if he stays he can make more news to put this more in the rearview mirror.

He couldn't run again in 2021, but he could run again in 2025 if he really wanted (but why would he?).

Barring something strange, there will probably be quite the battle between Justin Fairfax (whether he's actually Governor or still Lt. Governor) and current Attorney General Mark Herring (who beat Fairfax for the Democratic AG nomination in 2013) for the 2021 Democratic nomination.

Post is calling bullshit, but not in the way Fairfax would like:
“The Post did not find ‘significant red flags and inconsistencies within the allegations,’ as the Fairfax statement incorrectly said,” the Washington Post said in a story published Monday, sharply disputing the lieutenant governor's statement.

Well, the two-party system is not so much due to team spirit (which exists in every country) and more that we have first past the post / plurality wins electoral rules, which make a third party run virtually impossible, and make the most likely outcome of any such run a win for the major party most opposed to the third party.

Yeah, the national electoral system broken as well but the two-party dynamic exists at all levels. You have rural races for county spots divided by party. I'm talking denominators in the hundreds or less. You're either blue, red, or non-voting.

It really took hold here and once it's in place it's almost impossible to get rid of. Much of that is due to how we fund campaigns as well.

State and local election systems almost all use first past the post / plurality voting systems as well.

You're never going to eliminate partisanship, but it's possible to change voting rules so that third parties can succeed.
