I legitimately don't understand why more people aren't doing it. The idea of getting in my car to drive somewhere that might have a long line or that there could be crazy weather or I could have car problems the actual day of the election? What if I get sick? What if a family member gets sick and I need to help them? So many potential variables to juggle on a single day. It just feels like it's so much easier to color in some dots with a pen and drop it off in a ballot box or (gasp) in the mail.
I love mail in voting. Took me 5 minutes to mark every Dem on the ballot and drop it off in a ballot box. Easy peasy.

I've never understood the conservative view that voting needs to be difficult or require a sacrifice in order to be valid. Had a co-worker tell me he thinks everyone should be forced to stand in line on Election Day so they can "prove" their commitment to voting. That's just stupid. We should make it as easy as possible so everyone - every liberal, every MAGA, everyone - is able to cast their vote.
My 12-yo daughter was in the car with me when I dropped my ballot off on Monday. She was flabbergasted when I told her that Colorado is an anomaly in how well-run and easy our voting process is. (Everyone gets an automatic ballot by mail, you get texts confirming you're registered, as well as when your ballot is sent/received/counted, you can drop off at any number of locations or mail it in over the course of a couple of weeks). She genuinely did not understand why most states would require people to go somewhere at a specific day/time and stand in line to do exactly what I did.

My ballot has 15 state ballot measure and 8 county measures. That's in addition to president, US Congress rep, state rep, DA, a couple more state offices, and 12 judges. I shudder to think how long the lines would have been with a ballot that long if Colorado didn't have universal mail-in vote.

I like to tell those people passing a citizenship test should be required to vote.

Indiana has early voting, but it isn't advertised. You have to go searching for it yourself, and you end up finding that you have to call your local county by phone to set it up. It exists, but it is intentionally convoluted.

I tend to agree with this. So many questions that we have absolutely no idea on how to answer.

Are there enough pissed off women to bury Trump? Will MAGA been even more inspired to turn out because they feel they're in a literal holy war? Is there a subset of hidden Harris voters among registered GOP or are there more secret Trump voters that are too embarrassed to respond to admit it to pollsters? Will the youth vote actually make a difference this time? Is this increased early voting turnout better for Dems or GOP? Will a third of the country get off their collective asses and actually decide to have a say in all this? How much fuckery and chaos will GOP legislatures introduce into the process?

I truly don't know any of these answers. it's gonna be a long couple weeks.

I live only a few blocks from the early voting site near me. I work late today so I went and voted around 9:35. I was back home at 9:53. There wasn’t really a line and if I hadn’t brought my 29 year old daughter with me I would have been the youngest one there at 56.

My wife acts as a Republican voting judge so our neighborhood has a full voting over at the park 2 blocks north. Her personal politics makes mine look like Rip, and she gets to vote against Trump twice while preventing voter suppression.

It's important to remember that the Trump campaign (and dark money surrogates) has aired more forced teen trans surgery ads in the last month than there are teen trans surgeries in an entire year in the US (less than 300/year)

Likely? He's not going to win, and I don't think it's even going to be all that close.
“Republicans seem to be responding. In North Carolina, where Democrats had an edge of more than 30 percentage points in early voting at this point in 2022, they are ahead by just 1 percentage point this year.”
Every R who votes early is a R who won’t show up on election day, when they traditionally dominate. Ultimately what matters is how many cast ballots, not when they do it. It’s not a trend we want to see, but I don’t read too much into it.

Saw this about NC this morning.

North Carolina has completed one week of early in-person voting, and we have a new party leader in overall turnout.

🔴Republicans - 686,624
🔵Democrats - 683,301
🟡Others - 638,268

This marks our third "flip" since Democrats opened early voting with a slight lead; Republicans were able to net nearly 15,000 raw votes yesterday and look primed to build on their lead over the next two days.

It's the same story here in NC as in other states (and specifically Georgia). Compared to the last handful of general elections, this early-vote electorate is more Republican and white.

Two million votes have been banked, representing just over 35% of the expected vote. Ten days of early voting and same-day registration remain.
So no one has a clue what's going to happen, basically.

Maybe. But also worth noting that women seem to be voting in significantly larger numbers than men in early voting, which would seem to favor Harris pretty significantly (and track with what we saw in the midterms when Dems overperformed).

I only have gender statistics for six states, but if this is what is happening elsewhere -- and the polling is right about the big gender gap -- Trump is going to need the world's largest sausage party on Election Day
But again, who the hell knows.

Also unenrolled, and the last R presidential candidate I voted for was Gerald Ford. I was leaning strongly toward John McCain before he made his Palin blunder. OK, so the US hasn't had a good R president since Eisenhower; I still like to keep my options open. 8-)

Here is Aaron Rupar's long thread covering Trump's ongoing rally at Madison Square Garden, essentially his closing argument in the campaign.

There's a long lineup of MAGA speakers, and Trump hasn't appeared yet. Needless to say, it has been unhinged, just a series of loons trying to one-up each other in spittle-flecked reactionary xenophobia. It's an hours-long Two Minutes Hate.

I think I've mentioned this, but I taught an Eisenhower a few years back. I believe she was Ike's brother's granddaughter.

She went on to be an aide to Senator Hillary Clinton, and then to a career in the State Department. According to her, the entire Eisenhower family are Democrats now.

A “comedian” speaking at the rally literally said immigrants (he didn’t even specify those here illegally) were not welcome here to massive cheers and laughs. Meanwhile, J.D. Vance and his wife, whose parents are immigrants, are sitting back stage. I hope when Vance looks in the eyes of his children, he sees the betrayal he is committing. I hope he realizes that his children, if left alone in that crowd, would quite likely be unsafe.

I probably need to walk back my statement. CNN and Time correctly called it out, but rags like USA Today, CBS News, and others are completely glossing over the racism in their headlines to talk about the crowd size or Trump focusing on the economy and immigration. It remains to be seen what side of the story seeps into the public consciousness.

I'm appalled at the racism that was on display here, even though I shouldn't be surprised. But this is a new level of just blatant saying it out in the open. They are doubling down on just appealing to racist America and going full Hitler. It's absolutely reprehensible.

Oof

In other news, the Trump campaign grabbed the first person they could find with an Hispanic sounding name and had them issue a statement that the comedian’s joke about Puerto Rico doesn’t reflect Trump’s views.
The Trump campaign responds:

“This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign.” -Danielle Alvarez, Senior Advisor
