Wavves looks like it might sell out before the doors open and I'm not feeling like paying service fees much less service fees and DoS prices.

This however inspired me to pick up my Lord Huron tickets to make sure they don't sell out before I get mine.

The Loft's promoter charges $0.00 in service charges. They get some killer shows there too. Why do they have to be a hour drive? I'd potentially have a new favorite venue. (I won't know until June what sound, visibility, and beer prices are like)

(LM didn't like Wintersleep. )

Lucero was on Monday night. Took Tuesday off so as to not worry about being out late. They've done very little touring in Canada, and were really impressed to see the kind of turnout they got in a city where they've never been. They played a surprising number of songs off their 2003 release (That Much Further West), especially considering they're touring in support of their latest, but nothing older except one cover. I passed up a note asking if they might play a couple of their oldest, and got a "nope, maybe, possibly", but it didn't happen. Ben said he talked too much and they ran out of time. Brian said it's always really nice to see requests like that.

It was a really good show, better than seeing them as an opening act with Social Distortion (I was the one that travelled for that, obviously).

They're one of those bands that is here four times a year in different venues and get rave reviews and I just never seem to be able to catch them. I can't even remember who initially recommended them on OO.

Vegatable man in 2004.

Whose recommendation I still don't remember. :(

It was tswright in 2005. So that's nearly 8 years that I've managed to miss them.

I didn't get a chance to ask them if the name of the guy who first put me onto them in the early 2000s rang any bells, but I was under the impression he was a friend of theirs, at least back when he lived in Memphis.

Hey Chicagoans, this Saturday if you are near The Township, you can see the best Ypsitucky has to offer. Black Jake and the Carnies are one of the most fun shows you will ever see. If you go and for unfathomable reasons don't like them I'll get you your $7 back at a future OctoCon and a beer on me.

It's walking distance from my house (it's across the street from where we got on the El, if you can remember back that far), but my wife and I have made a solemn vow never to return to Township. Worst. Service. Ever.

I can remember that far but all I remember is the breakfast place with the polka dots.

Too bad. It looks like it'd be a late show but worth the night out.

I have a couple of great seats to see Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers with Edie Brickell at the Chicago Theater in July.

I just recently discovered that the Cub Scout troop chose that week to do Webelos Camp in Michigan.

I'm trying to decide if I want to drive the 5 hours back from camp to see the show and then drive back the next day to pick up the kids to come home. There'll be other leaders with them, so it's feasable. But, that would be like 15 hours in a car in 2 days.

I'm too old for that shit. If you have the fortitude for it and it's what you enjoy, great. Otherwise it takes an emergency to make that sort of stuff happen and I'll be miserable for it. In short, I wouldn't enjoy myself and if I wouldn't enjoy myself then there's no point in doing it.

Going to see Heart with Jason Bonham for their Led Zep tour. Should be a killer show. I'm not a huge Heart fan but I do think those ladies kick ass, and the Led Zeppelin tribute is just icing on the cake. Go check out the YouTube of Heart doing a Stairway to Heaven cover and all doubts should be erased. :D

I remember their cover of "Rock and Roll (Been a Long Time)" was pretty good back in the day. I don't think think I could sit through mid 80s heart though. I hated it then and I'd imagine it would make me blanche or wince even now, like if you made me sit through a Corey Hart show or something. If you made them promise not to play anything after say 1981 or 1982, I think we could talk. Looking at their single chronology, I'd say "What About Love" is line in the sand. Anything before that song is OK. Anything "What About Love" and after is a no go for an evening.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. Hell, I don't think I even KNOW any Heart songs recorded after 1982. I'm mainly going for Jason Bonham. I figure it's the closest I'm ever going to get to a Led Zeppelin concert.

And the cucumber water. Don't forget the cucumber water.

Sadly, that place closed. It then became a BBQ place, but it suddenly "closed for renovations", and I have a feeling it's never going to reopen.

I saw Page and Plant back when they toured and Page with the Black Crowes in the 90s. I picked up Celebration Day on a whim which is Zep doing a tribute concert in 2007 with Bonham on drums. Nice set of songs. Some they have never played live. It was much much better than I expected. Haven't seen the film yet though.

I also have the album but not the film...yet...after watching this clip I decided I gotta get it. I don't think I bought the package with the DVD but I better check to be certain...

Anyway, after watching the clip I decided it's time for my wife to figure out she doesn't need to be scared of Led Zep. Anymore. And I aim to help her with that...

You see, Jack White lured her in and got her to understand a guitar solo and not be afraid of it. Now she just needs to dig a little deeper and get that same understanding of Delta Blues. And Led Zep is gonna help her with that...

The point I'm tryin' to make here is that the opening bars of this song sound so much like a White Stripes song she has to see it our way.

Oh yeah, we watched it. She dug it...loved the part where Jack hammered together a guitar from a board, bottle, string and pickup...

It's just the whole Zeppelin thing she hasn't been exposed to. But she's home now so it's on...

Going to see Rush on May 3. I don't know how many times I've seen Rush, but the number is nearing 20. This show is an Arena show, and I'm stoked because every time I've seen them in the last 20 years, it has been an amphitheater show. I'm looking forward to getting the full effect of the light show for the entire concert!! Also making this an event is that I'm going with several friends that I haven't seen in a few years! (filed under: getting old sucks!!)

On June 21, my wife and I are going to see the Zac Brown Band. I've been wanting to catch this band for a few years now. Zac Brown has assembled a top notch group of musicians, and I hope they get to spread their wings a bit in the live show.

We'll be at that show as well, RLMullen. I was going to do Heart/Jason Bonham on the 22nd, but my wife isn't into either of them. She LOVES Zac Brown, however, so for our anniversary I switched our plans.

Got Black Sabbath tickets for August. They are coming out with a new record, their first in 30-40 years with Ozzy.

I paid $146 for row 25. Most I've ever paid for a concert.

Some of this may be repeat:

Saw Pinback in March
Saw Anthrax/Exodus/High on Fire/Municipal Waste/Holy Grail in April
Saw Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in April (one of my top 5 of all time)
Saw Alkaline Trio in April
Saw the might King's X on Saturday night (fuck the Scout Bar sound guy but they were still good)

Coming up:
The Neighbourhood (my daughter's favorite band)
Holy Grail (this time headlining downstairs at Fitzgeralds)
Fitz and the Tantrums (Fitz at Fitz, I saw these guys at last year's Summerfest and I couldn't wait to see them in a smaller venue)

Favorite moment of the last couple of months; left Anthrax early to get a jump on the valet situation at HoB Houston, ran into Matt Pike outside the show. When I told him that HoF was the reason that I was there that night he said "Sorry, it was only a 30-minute set".

Feeling crappier and crappier nowadays. I got free tickets to Peter Murphy doing a night of Bauhaus, so I went and it just didn't feel right. There was no energy, nothing to be energized about and I can't tell if it was him or me. On top of it all, I was really surprised he didn't play "Bela Lugosi's Dead" or "Stigmata Martyr". About the only satisfying song for the night was "Boys".

Still I'm planning on seeing a couple of shows in June. Hopefully, I'll have a better attitude and energy level by then. So right now the June plan is Lord Huron (which I have tickets for) and Supersuckers (which I do not yet have tickets for)

I missed The Joy Formidable when they came around in March (was on vacation with Elise) so I'm thrilled to see they're returning in September as part of MFNW.

Tickets acquired.

This may be the first show I bring earplugs. I expect them to be damn loud.

Murphy seems to be very hit and miss. He was incredible last time I saw him, but I've heard that he can also come across incredibly flat and bored.

Maybe he found a good meth dealer around here. ;)

I have to confess this publicly. The first time I saw a full Matisyahu show, it ranked as my favorite live show that wasn't U2. The second time, he must have been ill. He was royally mediocre, dropped lots of lyrics (as in skipped words), and couldn't seem to decide what style to deliver after shaving his beard. Plus the opener was less of a good fit and I got in an argument with two twits in the GA crowd. It seriously damaged my enjoyment of what was shaping up to be one of my favorite current artists. I hate it.

Tonight was a reunion show for beloved local band Jr. Gone Wild, who were doing cowpunk in the 80s before it was a genre. They broke up in 1995, which means they were basically getting out of the scene just as I was getting into it. It was unusual to be at a show and not feel like one of the oldest people there.

-Too Subtle For You-
Why did you always treat me so unkind
When all I did was try to speak my mind
I never thought you didn't care
You always thought I wasn't fair
I guess I was just too subtle for you sometimes
So please won't you tell me why a retroactive anger still surrounds you
It seems you always pushed me apart somehow
I often wonder what you think about me now
You never thought you never dreamed
I never planned I never schemed
I guess I was just too subtle for you sometimes
(Chorus)
Ideals meant nothing to me still I wasn't how you wanted me
I got my ideals back and this is how it's gonna be
You never thought you never dreamed
I never planned I never schemed
I guess I was just too subtle for you sometimes
(Chorus)

I guess I don't need to fight my way across Dallas in rush hour traffic tonight:
Our friend and bandmate Ted has been feeling unwell for a few days, and yesterday he was taken to a hospital to receive emergency treatment. The scans revealed a blood clot on the surface of his brain that requires an operation. Ted is receiving excellent care and we are being assured that he will recover quickly from surgery.

Sadly we have to postpone three upcoming headline shows planned for this week in Dallas on Tuesday 6/11, Woodlands on Wednesday 6/12, and New Orleans on Thursday 6/13. All dates will be rescheduled and will be announced as soon as we can; all tickets for this week’s events will be honoured at their rescheduled dates. We have no plans to cancel or postpone any other appearances along this current tour.

We’re all wishing Ted a speedy recovery.
Much love,
Mumford & Sons

Nine Inch Nails announced tour dates and they're playing the Rose Garden in November.

The presale is next Monday. I'm torn.

I've seen them several times (including at 3 PM, outside, in 90F heat, at Lollapalooza I). I haven't really paid much attention to the last several albums. And a band has to put on a hell of a stage show (ie. Muse) for me to bother seeing a show in a basketball arena.

On the other hand, Nine Inch Nails!

I'm sure I'll go with redrun. Historically, Trent does put on a lot of technology in his shows. That's the main reason I'll end up going.

I just hope he doesn't perform anything from the album he and his wife put out. The two songs I heard were horrible.

I'm supposed to see Supersuckers on Friday and Lord Huron on Tuesday but I have a kidney stone and kidney infection. I'm thinking stone will pass before Friday but I'm afraid the antibiotics are going to keep me feeling like death (and one doesn't drink on antibiotics if one knows what is right) and the course is a week long.

Wife bought tickets to see Fun. Ugh.

I felt compelled to agree to go since I had already used up two consecutive "Pass!" responses, and she was starting to get frustrated.

Maybe they won't use autotune live. :D

Some of their songs are ok, I guess, but I predict being surrounded by a decidedly young crowd, wondering what the grumpy, frowning oldster is doing here.
