Question, I had a ship damaged in a space battle. I used my ship parts to repair the shields, but several other areas still have red bars. I went to the ship technician at a spaceport but he says there's nothing he needs to fix. The red bars have slowly gone away, but I still have one hanging in there:
So am I supposed to do anything about this? Or will it just fix itself on its own?
It eventually fixed itself, so I guess it's just a matter of time passing.
Had another interesting encounter on the surface. I saw a ship come in to land but as I ran toward it, the ship lifted off again . However, I noticed that there were now five soldiers walking away from the landing area. Huh... that was interesting.
I also, on a later landing, had another ship land almost on top of me. As I watched three pirates left the ship and headed off. I went to the ship and went onboard. I got a flashed up mission dialogue that told me I had to either leave the ship or kill the crew. I choose the latter . Oddly there were only three pirates on board and I caught them in their seats. So now I have another ship, but my Crimson Fleet bounty is growing ever larger.

So what would you guys that are playing this say it is like? What other space game would you compare it to?

As I understand it, only hull damage is permanent, requiring you to repair it either by paying the tech at a spaceport or using ship repair parts. Everything else seems to be self-repairing over time, with the Starship Engineering skill speeding up the repair process.

Walking around cities and talking to people also makes me think of both The Outer Worlds and Cyberpunk 2077. This has grabbed me much more than either of those games though.
Had my first crash to desktop today after about 3 hours of play. Not the end of the world since I think I had an autosave just before it, but disappointing.
I ran across a few articles stressing to complete at least a few main missions before getting bogged down in side stuff so that's what I focused on and I can see where they're coming from. That dock issue I complained about earlier in the thread? Explained in one of the main missions. Makes me wonder how many other "tutorial" things I'm missing from not focusing on the main quests.
I've gone all in on Persuasion (Skill Rank 3 at the moment), and it's been pretty fun talking my way out of situations. Not that I don't enjoy the combat, but from a roleplay perspective fighting doesn't fit my character's background. I've been trying to play a style in which I don't shoot unless defending myself. I kind of consider myself Chaotic Good - I may engage in some shady stuff from time to time, but it's usually from a standpoint of working against greedy corporations and authority figures.

In addition the games mentioned above, I've sensed some Privateer and Mass Effect vibes while playing. And the first time I dropped a resource extractor at an outpost, I had a bit of a Star Wars Galaxies flashback.

There is one quest line where I think you would have a problem. It's a side mission, so you can save that for NG+.

I spent some time upgrading my Razerleaf in the ship builder today, and have been scratching my head about how the crew rating of the ship and crew assignments are supposed to work. I found this post on reddit, which (assuming it is accurate) goes a long way in answering my questions:
Crew Capacity (CC) and Crew Station (CS) work hand in hand. Crew Capacity is the maximum amount of crew members you can assign to your ship and Crew Station is the maximum amount of crew members that can work on your ship.
If you have 3 CC and 5 CS you'll only be able to assign 3 members because you're bottlenecked by CC. Inversely if you have 5 CC and 3 CS you'll only be able to assign 3 members. You need an equal amount of CC and CS, or at least enough of both to assign your desired members.
CC is increased through your ship systems (Reactor, weapons, engine)) while CS is increased through habs modules.
This can easily be verified by going in ship building and playing around with habs and systems, the Crew stat displays the lowest amount of crew your ship can receive.
The maximum amount of crew you can assign is 3, it can be further increased through the Ship Command perk, up to 8.
On a side note and for reasons unknown to me, Sarah seems to be free and doesn't cost any crew capacity as long as you don't assign her last. I assume it's a bug and may explain why some people were able to field more crew than they should have been able to.
Crew passanger, as far as I can tell, is just for NPCs to hanf around your ship, may be relevant for escort missions or stuff like that but I'm not sure.
It explains why I was able to assign 3 crew members to the stock Razorleaf (crew rating 2) because 1 of the 3 was Sarah, and also why I could only assign 4 crew members to the refitted Razorleaf (crew rating 5) because I haven't unlocked Ship Command and I'm at the limit of 3 plus Sarah.

Thanks. So, what is NG+ aside from replaying the game? Is it very different from the original NG?

It's my understanding that knowing details of how the NG+ works before you get there is pretty spoilerish...
If someone knows, maybe they can put it in a spoiler with an NG+ warning?

Hopefully. Some of the early reviews I scanned seemed to avoid discussing it other than implying it is unusual, so I'm guessing it has some sort of plot/story tie-in rather than simply being the run-of-the-mill kind of NG+ where you just replay the game with higher difficulty and better loot.
Based on that (which may be wildly inaccurate for all I know), I've been avoiding learning anything more about it until I get there myself.

Yeah, I know but I don't see a way to share how it changes that doesn't spoil everything. Similar to most other games, NG+ let's you keeps your levels and skills, but you lose all your stuff including ships. I've also heard it resets progress towards some of the achievements like the one to land on 100 planets. Unlike, other games, it doesn't seem to be any more difficult at least as far as I have played so far. The point of NG+ will become clear before the credits roll.
Speaking of achievements, five more to go!

I'd be ok if you put it in a major spoiler.
1. I have no idea if I'll finish one run let alone start a 2nd. Knowing whats in store may motivate me.
2. For me at least, you could tell me with absolute certainty who killed JFK and I'd probably forget by tomorrow. So even if I know right now what happens I most likely won't remember if I finish the game.

Here's an article, Starfield’s New Game Plus, explained. It has a non-spoiler first part and a spoiler second part. I only read the first part . I've put the text from the first part into spoiler tags below just in case you want to avoid having your eyes even glance at the second part by actually looking at the article . I think it is innocuous enough to not spoil the enjoyment of folks like Punisher who as he says, "Knowing whats in store may motivate me."
Caution for the below spoiler!! It does reveal information on how the transition into New Game + is handled and what New Game + is about. There is no story info.
Spoiler:
I'll put the first part of that article in additional spoiler quotes and just say that the switch to NG+ is handled a lot like Cyberpunk 2077. If you want to know more, continue on....
Spoiler:
Starfield’s final mission, “One Giant Leap,” will ask you to make a decision: hold off on ending the game so you can explore more or complete the main story and start a New Game Plus. If you decide to delay the ending, you’ll have the option to return to it at any point. Meanwhile, you’ll be free to just continue along like you have been.
The decision is actually baked right into “One Giant Leap” because of [SPOILERS]. For similar [SPOILERS] reasons, it’s not actually called “new game plus.” You just continue along at the same XP and level, and with the same skills and Powers. You will, however, lose all of your ships, cargo, money, weapons, and inventory, though.
In new game plus, you’ll have the option to skip the main story missions, but everything else is reset. You’ll have a fresh start with all of the factions, and every side quest will be available again. Your relationships with all of the members of Constellation will be reset as well, including any romance. You can even rush through collecting the artifacts and head straight to the ending again.
From what we can tell, the enemies are not scaled up in the new game.

Thanks gor the link. It was an interesting read.
I read the whole and I guess some people will find it super spoilerly but I didn't see a big deal.
I do like that when you get to ot the games does warn you to continue or finish. It would suck if there was no warning and you accidentally finished.
I also can see how the choice leads to NG+ and why people won't want to know about it before had.
I didn't like the last part that says you'll need to have several run throughs to see everything. I'm almost definitely not doing multiple runs so I'll have to wait for those spoilers to come around.
Bethesda has omitted a double bond in what I presume was supposed to be the caffeine molecule on various whiteboards. This fixes it.

The obvious solution, which I've seen in other games such as LotRO, is to have 3 walking speeds: a slow stroll which matches the NPC walking speed; a brisk trot that is the normal PC walking speed; and a sprint that lets you run at full speed until your endurance gives out. I'm pretty sure that LotRO included the slow walking option to cater to roleplayers, but it may not be reasonable to put extra development resources into a niche feature like that just to make escort missions slightly less annoying in a single-player game.
It turns that that Starfield does have a slower walking speed that is toggled using caps lock. I never noticed that it existed until I accidentally hit caps lock today and had to figure out why I was suddenly crippled.
Of course the walking speed is slower than the NPC walking speed, so it still isn't possible to actually match speeds with someone that you need to follow.

Maybe just something I was stuck on, but I was totally stuck at 3/4 fauna on one of the early planets. Looked online and realized there are critters in the oceans. You have to land on a biome designated as “coastal” (Mountains: Coast). Then make your way to the ocean and jump in with the scanner on. Lots of stuff in the sea!

Oh, good to know that. I finally finished the scan of Jemison which was a pain as the very last animal I was missing one in only one biome and was tiny compared to the others. Not thinking about going into the water would have driven me nuts.

The default is running. The caps lock gives you walking. Shift is sprinting.
If games actually had players move at a walking speed, people would explode.

I believe it also increases your scanner range for those cavorting beasties.

Just at about sixty-five hours played. I finished another artifact main mission but really needed a break from these big ones so I'm now running around trying to clear up some activities on New Atlantis. Funny thing is, completing some activities trigger others. One activity which had three parts triggered three more activities. I could see Starfield reaching the same levels of playtime I've put into Satisfactory, Surviving Mars and Crusader Kings III.
I've added skills so I can now carry 165kg which is good since I seem to be always adding new apparel, weapons and other things.
I might put some more effort into planetary mining since I have two missions requiring the delivery of lots of two resources. I'm already mining chlorine and now I have to do the same for aluminum. And I think it's time to go do some exploring. I've been staying in the same areas so perhaps I might try some new systems. For some reason I just can't get too excited about the main missions. Yeah, I'll get to them eventually, but I don't want to rush it.

If you weren't aware, it's literally impossible to complete every quest, as Starfield uses the Radiant Quest system. It's the same basic thing that Skyrim and Fallout 4 had - if you talk to the right person, they will randomly generate a quest for you on the spot.
Skyrim: Go kill (dragon, giant, etc) at (random location.) Go deliver these (items) to (two or three random NPCs.)
Fallout 4: Go clear out (enemy group) at (random camp.) Go rescue (random NPCs) from (random enemy group) at (random location.) Or, of course, "Another settlement needs your help."
There were scores of different templates for each game, with thousands of potential combinations. Starfield probably takes it even further. I do know that if it came from a mission board, it's probably a Radiant Quest. I'm not sure what else is.
It would help if I could get some damned free time to actually play the game!

Ship registration pro tip:
If you go to a shipyard and register your ship there, you will have a registration fee of 84% of the value of the ship, limiting sales profitability.
However, you can go into your character screen, select “Ship”and you can register the ship at a lower value, about 66% of value.
A bug, otherwise makes no sense, but that’s what it is.

I killed that very first pirate captain...
(what he dropped)
Spoiler:
(after first persuading him not to fight, of course) - and he dropped a legendary space suit:
Mechanized Ground Crew Spacesuit:
- Combat Vereran : take 15% less damage from humans
- Resource Hauler : Resources weigh 25% less
- Mechanized : +40 carry capacity
It's going to be hard to switch this suit out for one that actually is better armor.

The ships need to have a few more random safe storage boxes sitting around!
I have a ton of different medical items that I'd like to leave on my ship (zip bandages and the like) but I don't want to dump them in the captain's locker with the weapons and old books.
