Finished 19 games last year, which is a personal best since I've been tracking these things.

Games finished
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (PS5): B+. March 23. Absolutely loved the story and characters, but didn't really enjoy the open world aspects very much. 56 hours.
- Dragon's Dogma 2 (PS5): B+. April 1. It's a brilliant world to explore. The game as a whole is also quirky, incredibly obtuse, and janky as hell. Alternately thrilling and hair-tearingly frustrating. Story and characters are all laughably bad, but running around in the cool world mostly makes up for it. The ending felt hugely rushed and honestly pretty lame. 38 hours.
- Elder Scrolls Online: Necrom and Skyrim Expansions (PS5); B, April 15. Necrom is very, very…green. :) Pretty interesting story, but wasn’t a huge fan of the cliffhanger ending. Skyrim finally clicked after bouncing off it several times previously. Pretty good story, but the underground zone was obnoxious to navigate. ESO is def starting to show its age, but still a very solid game. 44 hours and counting.
- Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster (PS5): A. April 27. A truly wonderful retro experience. Captivating storytelling, a brilliant job system, excellent characters, and just the right amount of challenge (with the boosts on). 21 hours.
- Jedi Survivor (PS5): A-. May 1. Third time is the charm, I guess. Bounced off this hard twice, third time it clicked. Sticking to the story made all the difference, as it tells a really fantastic SW story when not getting sidetracked by all the other stuff. Slight dings for some tough platforming parkour and some confusing maps, but otherwise excellent. 20 hours.
- Vader Immortal (Meta VR): C+. May 10. A very short Star Wars VR "themepark". Was kinda interesting, but mostly just felt like a proof of concept for the much better Tales From the Galaxy's Edge. Glad I only paid $10 for it. 3 hours
- EA FC 24 (PS5): B+. May 31. A much better soccer game than the last iteration I played. The difficulty felt more balanced, with several very tight games and really thrilling moments. Could be a little bit wonky sometimes (the ball rarely went out for a throw, some stiff animations, etc), but the general flow and play of the game was excellent. Won the EPL with Man City by 3 points over Liverpool. 15 hours.
- Triangle Strategy (Switch): A-. June 3. Like Jedi Survivor, I bounced off this one twice before it really clicked. A fantastic strategy JRPG, probably only second to FF Tactics. Amazing story, looked cool, fun combat, and just the right difficulty and length for me. Thoroughly enjoyed this one. 30 hours.
- EA College Football 25 (PS5): B. July 26. A really fun football game that does an excellent job capturing the feel of college football. Was cool to see the stadium I’ve been watching games at all my life on my big screen. Won the Natty with Utah to close out a 14-2 season. Has its quirks (I didn’t fumble once all season on default settings) but it’s miles better than Madden imo. 12 hours
- Visions of Mana (PS5): B+. Sept 14. Enjoyed this one far more than I expected to. It's saccharine sweet, but is a beautiful world with a great story and characters, fun combat, and excellent music. The perfect length and difficulty for me as well. 31 hours.
- Control (PS5): A-. Sept 19. Second time through, enjoyed this time WAY more because I could adjust the difficulty and just cruise through the absolute head-trip of a story. 12 hours.
- Faerie Solitaire Remastered (PC): B. Oct 9. I'm a sucker for these, not really sure why. It's a pretty long game to get through but was never overly challenging, which I liked. A great "sit back and chill" time-waster. 10 hours.
- Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred (PS5): B. Oct 13. Decent story with a crappy ending in a cool new zone with a neat new class. Will fiddle around with a bit of the post campaign stuff, but the Seasonal grind doesn’t interest me all that much. 15 hours.
- Dragon Age Veilguard (PS5): A. Nov 19. A truly wonderful Dragon Age game. Excellent story, fantastic world, amazing characters, and a killer ending. Started a little slow, but I fell in love with it by the end.
- Life is Strange: True Colors (PS5): A-. Nov 23. An excellent story with solid writing, great characters, and a very cool locale. I do like that they didn't lean too much into Alex's powers. It didn't quite fully stick the landing (the flashback bits felt out of place) but it had me interested all the way through. 9 hours.

Currently playing
- Elder Scrolls Online: Gold Road (PS5)

Abandoned Video Games
- Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin (PS5): I tried so damn hard to like this game. It did have some cool things going for it, like fun combat, a neat job system, a retelling of FF 1, and it looked great. However, having to constantly micromanage an endless flood of inventory with tiny incremental changes combined with laughable character dialog made it impossible to keep going. 5 hours
- Guild Wars 2 (PC): I may pick at this through the year, but I typically just get to the mid levels before getting bored again. 15 hours
- Asgard's Wrath 2 (VR) - I like VR games for a while, but I tend to get massive headaches after 20-30 minutes. I also find I don't really enjoy flailing around to control combat.
- Star Wars: Tales From the Galaxy's Edge (VR) - See above. Also, it wouldn't load my save game and I didn't feel like starting over after 10'ish hours.
- Granblue Fantasy: Relink (PS5) - A pretty decent game, reminded me of a combination between the Tales series and Monster Hunter. Got sidetracked by other things, may go back to it at some point. 10 hours. EDIT: Tried it a second time, got about to the same spot and lost interest.
- Last Epoch (PC) - Was really enjoying this until I got to the boss in Chapter 8 (of 9) and he was simply impossible to beat without completely rebuilding my character (who had cruised through the entire game up to that point). I suppose I may try that at some point, but I'm so annoyed right now that I refuse. Plus, FF VII Rebirth comes out tomorrow, so... 20 hours.
- Baldurs Gate 3 (PS5) - Got pretty far into Act 2 (just got to Moonrise Towers) before wandering off. Really clicked on console, which was nice. 42 hours.
- Immortals of Aveum (PS5) - A really awesome game that sadly proved to be too difficult for my remedial FPS skills. 12 hours.
- Unicorn Overlord (PS5) - Beautiful game, but I didn't enjoy that it felt more like a single unit RTS than a tactical RPG. Never really clicked, even though I was hoping it would. 4 hours.
- KOTOR 2 (PC) - I have it an honest-to-god try, but the story just could overcome the dated graphics for me. Everything outside of dialog just looked so damn boring, especially coming from Jedi Survivor. 10 hours.
- Diablo IV (PS5) - Got to a bunch of stuff I hadn’t before during Season 4. Cleared the map 100%, hit level 50, got to World Tier 3, cleared first four season chapters, etc. Don’t much care for the endgame grind though, wandered away soon after. 32 hours.
- After Us (PS5} - A stunning beautiful artistic platformer. Similar vibe to Journey, but with way more difficult platforming and a rudimentary combat system. I wanted to fluke it but found it to be mostly frustrating. 3 hours.
- Balatro (PS5 & iPad) - Poker roguelike that's way more fun than it has any right to be.
- Monster Hunter Rise (PS5) - Bought Sunbreak, tried to progress enough to see the new stuff, I hate hate HATE Rampages so I never even got there. Seriously, Rampages are absolute garbage.
- V Rising (PS5) - Bounced off this one...HARD. Felt like a boring, slow, clunky, unfun mix of Valheim/Conan/literally any survival game and Diablo
- Lost Eidolons (PS5) - A pretty decent Fire Emblem clone. Fun for a bit, but that style of game generally wears thin pretty quickly for me. (5 hours)
- Cryptmaster (PC) - Looked like it might be an interesting typing-based dungeon crawl. Ended up not being fun at all, although the graphics looked really neat. (2 hours)
- Fell Seal (Switch) - This is a really good tactical JRPG, but I always end up wandering away from it for some reason. 10 hours.
- Grim Dawn (PC) - A decent enough Diablo II clone that ran into my dreaded "10 hour curse".
- Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak (PS5) - Good game with a great story...that could have been told in about half the time. As much as I enjoyed it, the game just dragged so badly in parts. 32 hours
- Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous (PS5) - Probably the closest I've played to the old Infinity Engine games. Fun gameplay, but the story and characters were incredibly boring. 12 hours.
- Jeanne D'Arc (PS5): Very fond memories of this one from the PSP, but the low-res graphics were distracting and TRPG gameplay has progressed in the years since. 6 hours.
- Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (Switch): Got about 12 hours into a replay of the main game, then a few hours into the xpac. Just kinda wandered away from both.
- Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (PS5) - Looked pretty but really boring gameplay. 3 hours
- Star Wars Outlaws (PS5) - Nope, still don't like the "Red Dead" formula, even if it has a Star Wars skin. May be one I come back to later though. 4 hours
- Vampire Survivors (PS5) - Didn't think much of this bullet hell shooter to begin with, but it really grew on me the longer I played. 20 hours, so far.
- Final Fantasy VI (PS5) - I've tried to get back into this one twice now, and it just hasn't clicked either time. I actually think I prefer FF V as the best of the pre-PS FF games, which I didn't think I'd be saying. 10 hours
- Throne & Liberty (PS5). A pretty but soulless Korean MMO. Story was hot garbage, combat was meh, and I didn’t find it particularly fun. 10 hours.
- New World Aeternum (PS5). Started pretty good, but got incredibly boring and grindy toward the end of the MSQ. I got to the final boss, realized I was under leveled, and simply didn’t care enough to bother grinding out so I could finish it. 45 hours.
- FF XIV: Dawnbringer (PC). It hurts me to put this one on the list, but it was simply boring as hell. I think the formula has finally just become too stale for me, and both the new zone and characters were meh. 40 hours.

- Tales from the Red Dragon Inn
- Lock Up
- Wyrmspan
- Kabuto Sumo
- Tanares Adventures Ultimate
- Skyteam

1) Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle - 20240211 - Not sure why it took this long, but a good bit of fun despite annoyances

5) Rise of the Ronin - 20240427 - Interesting mash-up of Nioh and Tsushima, a bit long.

Hello, 2024. Tell 2023 that I'm sorry - I didn't mean to ignore them and only get one game finished. I swear - I played a bunch of games last year, I just didn't finish many. Which is fine, but I get that 2023 could feel affronted. I'll try to do better this year

Finished (PC unless specified):
  • Diablo 4
  • [Gamename]
  • [Gamename]
Playing:
  • Borderlands GOTY (not Enhanced, blech)
Side Games (multiplayer, coop only etc):
  • Diablo 4
  • [Gamename]
1/4 - Diablo 4. Played through Season 2 with a rogue, which I really enjoyed. While I may jump back in and try to finish some odds and ends, I'm considering my solo season run complete.

Finished
  1. Baseball Highlights 2045 (Jan 16, iOS) 3/8
  2. Dragon's Lair 3D: Return to the Lair (Feb 17, PC, 7.5 hrs, 76% treasure collection) 6/8
  3. Mass Effect 3 (Apr 14, PC, Legendary Edition, 93 hrs, Insanity difficulty, Level 60 Female Renegade Infiltrator) 7/8
  4. Ori and the Blind Forest (May 20, PC, 34 hrs, Normal difficulty, 97% completion) 6/8
  5. Pony Island (Jul 4, PC, 4 hrs) 3/8
  6. The Hex (Jul 7, PC) 4/8
  7. NFL Retro Bowl '25 (Sep 15) 6/8
  8. Hello Kitty Island Adventure (Sep 17, 170 hrs 4 min) 6/8
Rating system:
6 to 8 = Atari 2600
4 to 5 = Intellivision
0 to 3 = Odyssey²

Playing
  1. The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher's Bay: two thirds through?
  2. Little Orpheus: finished episode 1.
  3. The Longing: AAR
  4. Lost Odyssey: Heading for the final area.
  5. Monster Train: about halfway through my first run.

Backburnered (games I'm in denial about having abandoned)
  1. Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization: I finished the tutorial and played on the easiest difficulty against one opponent a couple of times, but I kept getting creamed. I'm now going through a 3-hour tip video on YouTube to learn how I'm really supposed to play.

Abandoned (AA = Apple Arcade)
  1. Kingdom Two Crows (AA): a neat experience but I gave up on the second island. Thoughts here.
  2. Wylde Flowers (AA): this is my first attempt at a farming sim. It's story and character-focused, and has lots of charming animation and voice acting. But I had enough after a few boring, cloying hours.
  3. Monument Valley (AA): a puzzle game with M.C. Escher-style trickery. Kind of neat until it started blocking my path with walking, cawing crows.
  4. Stardew Valley (AA): stopped playing because it was too addictive. Thoughts here.
  5. Stitch. (AA): puzzle game with embroidery theme. Maybe it's relaxing but it's also too easy, so what's the "point?" (heh)
  6. The Oregon Trail (AA): a 2021 remake by Gameloft. Spiffy-looking, and you can even choose to play a Native American. But it seems so complicated now, losing the simple fun of the original.
  7. Agent Intercept (AA): flashy but not very engaging car combat arcade game with a spy theme. Feels too on-rails. The cutscenes between missions are completely uninteresting. I'd much rather play the Spy Hunter arcade game.
  8. What the Car? (AA): silly platform jumper where you're a car with legs.
  9. Hidden Folks (AA): I was hoping for a fun hidden object game or something like Where's Waldo, but this is disappointing.
  10. Cypher 007 (AA): isometric stealth game in which you're James Bond. Not really that fun. I don't think even Bond fans will care.
  11. Crashlands (AA): sci-fi survival action RPG. Just not grabbing me at all.
  12. Tint. (AA): by the makers of the aforementioned Stitch. Dip your finger in drops of paint and draw connecting lines to origami shapes of the same color. Sometimes you have to mix colors. A much better and more challenging game than Stitch, but after solving 20 puzzles, I had enough.
  13. Cornsweeper (AA): it's Minesweeper but with a campaign. You earn money (even when you lose), which you can use to buy power-ups. Unfortunately, one of those power-ups is the ability to flag possible mines; you don't start with it like you do in normal Minesweeper. That kinda sucks. And the game is buggy and poorly explained.
  14. Cooking Mama: Cuisine! (AA): my first try of a Cooking Mama game. Some of the minigames are based on sound cooking techniques, but others have nothing to do with cooking. I'd rather just cook in the real life.
  15. Shovel Knight: Dig (AA): had no fun with this roguelike platformer.
  16. Frozen Synapse: cool but too hard! Thoughts here.
  17. Eye of Ra: this was in one of itch.io's big charity bundles. It's a space sim where you use an orbital laser to destroy objects threatening Earth. You get clues about those objects from emails and news articles. Neat but feels too much like a job.
  18. Squiggle Drop (AA): I played and enjoyed this a lot, but don't feel the need to complete it. Thoughts here.
  19. Sneaky Sasquatch (AA): Stopped after getting 6 of the 9 map pieces. Thoughts here.
  20. Slay the Spire (AA): gave this a second try. Enjoyed it, but stopped playing. Here's why.
  21. Inscryption: hated it, then loved it, then hated it. Deets here.
  22. Freedom Fighters: fun but too flawed, thoughts here.
  23. Galaga Wars (AA): a shmup with coins to collect, powerups to buy, and visual and audio references to Galaga. It's colorful, but not even in the same galaxy of fun and challenge as the original arcade game.
  24. Warped Kart Racers (AA): themed after the shows King of the Hill, Family Guy, American Dad, and Solar Opposites. My first kart racing game. It can be challenging, but I'm not really into the gameplay, the theme, or being able to drift just by pressing a button.
  25. Balatro: I was hooked like everyone else, but only briefly. Thoughts here.
  26. Dead Cells (AA): I played this for 10 minutes. It was fun, but I don't want to get into it right now, certainly not on a mobile device.
  27. Rabbids: Legends of the Multiverse (AA): This is a simple card-based RTS in which you deploy troops to escort your character as he auto-walks through enemy territory. As it's for kids, it's not challenging or deep, and this review confirmed my suspicion that it's not a good game. Still, I thought I would at least finish the first world, if only to see the goofy cutscenes. But, unless I'm missing something, stage 6 requires you to play an online match. No spank you.

DeLorean: 2006 (15); 2007 (14); 2008 (20); 2009 (23); 2010 (13); 2011 (15); 2012 (17); 2013 (25); 2014 (25); 2015 (9); 2016 (8); 2017 (9); 2018 (2); 2019 (22); 2020 (9); 2021 (6); 2022 (14); 2023 (7)

I had a good year. Finished some big RPGs, a few other non-RPG titles, and unlike some people - *cough* Archinerd - I did finally finish Witcher 3.

Hoping this year I do a better job keeping up with documenting them all.

In Progress
Trails of Cold Steel III

Completed
Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Trails of Cold Steel II

So...2023 was probably the worst gaming year of my life. I got so completely immersed in my physical movie library (not a bad thing) that the only game I played to completion was Point of View (not a good thing).

I guess the best I can say right now is that I'm playing the following games that are not so much made to "finish"...:
Last Call BBS
The Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe
Two Point Campus
Unpacking

...and considering:
Doom Eternal
Cloudpunk
Observer: System Redux
System Shock

Finished:
7/10 Milk Inside a Bag of Milk Inside a Bag of Milk [PC] - The game is less than 15 minutes long. It's an abstract little psychological visual novel.

Games Playing
Borderlands 3- Finished the game early last year with the Amara character and got to level 72, mayhem 10. Then I put the game down and wanted to get all the game content before going back with the other characters. Currently doing a Zane playthrough.

Fallout 4- Need to finally put some serious playtime into this as it has been sitting in my queue for years. Still can't get into it so it might get put back on hold.

Cities II- Put quite a few hours into it already but put it down until some patches and performance improvements

Crusader Kings 2- Another that has been sitting around for years that I need to sink my teeth into...

Football Manager 2024- I know once I get the game it will take up most of my gaming time for the next year like the series does every year.

Uninstalled. Free Mission #2 put me off of it.

Finished Portal: Revolution, a free fan made expansion built on Portal 2. It was mostly quite good Portal gameplay, although at times it bogged down a little bit into finding the right pixel on which to shoot a portal. It's a bit unstable, though, with frequent crashes. Still worth every penny I paid for it, though!

Finished FFXIV Online - Shadowbringers expansion with my Level 83 Reaper.

I've really enjoyed getting back into it, especially now that I'm over the learning curve of having to remember how to play. There's simply not a better MMO at allowing you to play solo 95% of the time but still be able to easily participate in dungeon/raid content. I swear in the dozens of dungeon/raids I've completed in that game, I could count on one hand the number of bad group experiences I've had. And the storylines and characters are excellent - it's really like playing a 200+ hour FF game.

Now it's on to Endwalker, which I'm really looking forward to since it got such rave reviews. I should be able to finish that one up before the Dawntrail expansion hits this summer.

All this FFXIV talk (from you and others) is going to make me wanna re-sub. I really shouldn't with this year's sports games on the horizon and too other things distracting me. But MMOs are just a different experience and I'm starting to crave that again.

Updated to move BG 3 down, and add other games.

Portal 2 (over a decade after first starting!) - I had gotten stuck trying to go to the wrong place with my portals and set it aside back in the day. This was a lot of fun still! GladOS and Cave Johnson and Wesley!)

Rise of the Tomb Raider (almost a decade after first starting!) - I had been stuck in a combat I wasn't getting past, so after almost 8 years, I was in the mood for some Tomb Raiding, and fired it up again on an easier mode as the combat is... ok, and I wanted to just play. I do tire of the open world stuff.

I've found that I tend to give up on Open World games more easily - the open world stuff eventually just doesn't drive me to finish games as much as a tighter narrative, and I don't really like survival/crafting mechanics (in most survival/crafting/open world games - as so many are these days) as the hunting and grinding for materials gets old rather quickly.

Abandoning orbit.industries. It's down to $7 on GOG, figured how bad is it? Turns out, the team just can't seem to "finish" this game. There's a good game in there, but the team can't carry through to let the good game out.

As name suggests, you have a space station, and your job is to carry out the overall objective of your leader, which basically is a series of research and manufacturing missions. Each of these missions require a specific set of modules on your station. However, you are not given any budget beyond what you start with, so you have to undertake third-party missions to make $$$ (which would have its own requirements). Keep in mind that EACH module you add to the station will have its own requirements, like power, air, and personnel. So you have to add those to get your module up to 100% efficiency. Later modules (which requires research) started to require more resources, which require different generators (which needs to be researched as well)

However, there are a TON more modules to research. Some of these limit the amount of damage different types of "errors" can cause, while others are better version of generators you already have, but with different dimensions and requirements. Errors are basically "bad events" that happen onboard, from hostile sabotage to bad luck. Some may cause casualties (like a thermal event), some can spread to adjacent modules (like a computer virus). Fire extinguishing system will obviously stop thermal events, as will airlock bulkheads, while guard posts will stop hostile sabotage.

The station is in full 3D and every attachment point is modelled nicely, but the lack of QoL UI and the bizarre decision to NOT require prerequisites to build modules make the game difficult toplay.

Indeed, this game reminded me of another space station game: Stable Orbit. It's abandoned though, and way too expensive for what it offers.

Finished Metro 2033 (Redux version, FWIW). This was one of the first games I started when I got my Steam Deck, but I never got too far into it. While it had a good atmosphere, I didn't yet have enough dexterity with the Deck's controls to play a game where I had to conserve ammo while big nasties were jumping out of the dark at me. Happy trigger finger + poor aim = no ammo left.

Now that I'm more comfortable with the Deck I went back to it and was able to make it through to the end. The story is about survivors in the Moscow subway tunnels after a nuclear war. It's a desperate existence with warring human factions and nasty mutants. You play Artyom, a young idealist trying to help people reclaim the surface.

The story moves along nicely and the gameplay was challenging without being overwhelming. The weapon mod system was a bit much for me - as in most games of this type I just settled into one or two weapons of choice and ignored the rest of it. I could have done without the gas mask system where you had to change out air filters in toxic areas, but I suppose it did help to move things along so that you didn't linger exploring too much.

I got the two sequels as part of a bundle, but I'll probably switch to something else for a bit.

Finished Half Life 2: Episode 1. I thought I had started this but never finished it long ago, but that appears to have been Episode 2. I did, in fact, finish this one long ago, but it's short so replaying it was quick and fun. Now on to actually finishing Episode 2!

(I also did the Lost Coast level, which I had never done before, but since that's just a brief level I'm not counting it as a full game.)

Damn dude, you’re as bad as me LOL. Also started but never finished Ep 1 years ago. It’s been in the back of my brain ‘needing to finish’ for like a decade. Also own and have never played Ep. 2

I did finally play Lost Coast last year, thinking it was DLC, but I think it was a demo.

Next up: Finish Portal 1! :D

Finally finished Trails of Cold Steel. Like Yakuza: Like a Dragon, another game I finished this year, it was one of my gaming white whales. I had started it on at least three separate occasions and never got past Chapter 3. Finally decided to buckle down and knock it out.

Greatly enjoyed it, even though I disappointingly had to Weaken/Retry one of the final bosses. I try not to do that, but I don't think I had the right party build and didn't feel like trying to go back and figure it out. I played the game without relying on any guides or character builds, so I don't feel too bad with only having to cheese one boss.

I had a choice to grab Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth on sale or continue on with Trails of Cold Steel II, and opted for the latter. At this point I'm so invested in the story and so in the mindset of the combat system that I felt it just made sense to keep going down that path.

The story kept me going, and the gwent battles varied in quality. It's Witcher adjacent, so I feel like I've at least started my gaming goal for this year (which is to finally finish Witcher III).

I thoroughly finished Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty last night...all gigs, side quests, Relic points, car thefts and played through all four possible endings. Fantastic addition to the base game.

Next up is playing through the final missions of the main game so I can finally put this one to bed. I already have all gigs and jobs complete, have reached max level/reputation, and just need to play through the different ending variations. I've loved every minute of the 115 hours I've spent in Night City, but a part of me is looking forward to moving on to something else after this being the focus of pretty much all my gaming time since December.

After around 125 hours going everything I could find in the world of Cyberpunk, I'm now done with the whole thing! I spent a bunch of time last night and today playing through all the different endings of the Cyberpunk 2077 main game. It was pretty cool to see how much effort they put into the different possible endings and would say they are all worth experiencing.

I never even tried this game before the release of v2.0 and Phantom Liberty, but they made an absolutely amazing game out of it in the end.

Now that I'm done with the game that has consumed pretty much all of my gaming time since December, I have to decide what's next. I'm eager to finally see what all the Baldur's Gate 3 hype is about, but I may go with something lighter and shorter before jumping into another huge game. Maybe...
