Are you better off?
My radio said that when asked if we're better off now than we were 4 years ago, 52% of us said hell nah. That's not good for the home team. Me, I'm much better off. The economy is doing great by the numbers and I'm feeling it, as I daresay are most of us here. But the 52% of us who must not own homes or retirement accounts are itching for change.

Other than stress from the upcoming election I'm doing pretty good.

Re: Are you better off?
I assume this is strictly a financial metric? I have less debt and my wages have risen a little and my 401K has risen a lot. I'd say marginally better off.

Re: Are you better off?
Generally when I have seen the question asked, the metric to be used is left unspecified.
I chose better off even though I have a kid in college now which means I am definitely not better off financially.

Re: Are you better off?
Absolutely not but that has nothing little to do with the efforts of this administration. I quit working right around a time of record inflation and wage accompanying wage gain. I got hit by a car and will never fully heal. I've lived in isolation through COVID and still haven't re-integrated which has taken its toll and now there I haven an anxiety against going out. My neighborhood continues to trend toward the stuff of a contradictory sense of self centered impoverished arrogance.
That said, my stress (aside from still dealing with insurance companies and lawyers from the accident) is still lower than it would be otherwise and I still don't have to go back to work, nor do I feel a sense of impending doom that I should go back to work. So being worse off isn't nearly as bad as all that.

I saw a beggar leaning on his wooden crutch
He said to me, "You must not ask for so much"
And a pretty woman leaning in her darkened door
She cried to me, "Hey, why not ask for more?"
Oh, like a bird on the wire
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free

Financially? I'm the same. My income only changes based on the cost of living, so I'm permanently in neutral. Overall? Am I better off than in 2020 at the height of COVID? Uh, yeah.

This is an interesting poll, Kraken. Thanks for doing this. I think it may be enlightening in terms of why OO has the strong political leanings it does.Kraken wrote: ↑Sat Oct 19, 2024 1:49 am My radio said that when asked if we're better off now than we were 4 years ago, 52% of us said hell nah. We’re better off and it’s not even close. Sure, some things were better in the pre-Covid days. But overall my family is in a much better spot.

Re: Are you better off?
From a financial standpoint, without a doubt.
My last three years have been the best of my sales career. I have made enough to pay off every single debt I have (house, cars, CC, etc) and am progressing right on pace for a (hopefully) early retirement. Doubt it could have possibly gone much better, tbh.
But by that metric, conventional wisdom says I should be a Trump supporter so I get more tax cuts, right?

This has been probably the biggest gain over a four year span since I left college.

I don't believe all of that 52% is being truthful.Kraken wrote: ↑Sat Oct 19, 2024 1:49 am My radio said that when asked if we're better off now than we were 4 years ago, 52% of us said hell nah. Re: Are you better off?
Absolutely.
Financially, I've changed from adjuncting two parallel part-time jobs to a full-time career drawing on all my education and doubling my salary.
Also, I can go outside and mingle with the public without fearing for my life from a virus that my government at the time tried to downplay and deflect. Vaccines and awareness have finally made it safer.
National security, crime, employment, the economy, and the environmental crisis have all received attention in the right directions.
Most of all, I've benefited from decent and solid people being in charge of the executive branch, as opposed to a venal malignant narcissist and his absurd and ideologically repugnant cronies.
Whatever happened to that guy?

Re: Are you better off?
Most definitely better off. I am making 50% more money. Paid off all my debts except my morgage and my retirement is looking really good. My morgage is at 3.5% APR so I am in no hurry but did pay in more to reduce the principle so it should be paid off by the time I retire when I turn 67. I am in no hurry to retire because my income is only going to increase exponentially since there are so few of me to go around as the years go by.

Re: Are you better off?
Four years ago was October 2020. My wife had COVID and was locked in another part of the house for two weeks. NJ had been ravaged for months and everything was still very disjointed in terms of being able to be out in the world.Kraken wrote:My radio said that when asked if we're better off now than we were 4 years ago, 52% of us said hell nah. Even ignoring all that, yes, me and mine are doing quite a bit better economically.

If we're getting micro-personal, my father died on October 16, 2020. Pancreatic cancer.
I certainly can't say I felt better four years ago than I do today.

I mean, in 1934 when Germans were asked whether they were better off now than when they were 4 years ago who could have known that the agent for change would be so Nazi like? Now we have the benefit of hindsight, so of the two agents of change I can clearly see which one is more Nazi-like. So really the question should be - do you think being more Nazi like would make things better or not?Kraken wrote: ↑Sat Oct 19, 2024 1:49 am My radio said that when asked if we're better off now than we were 4 years ago, 52% of us said hell nah. Re: Are you better off?
Ironrodically, the next president will inherit an already strong economy that is only getting better as incomes catch up to inflated prices, and governments from federal to local scramble to encourage more housing construction. The change candidate's proposed policies will reverse Biden's gains. The Christofascists won't make the trains run on time or put a chicken in every pot.raydude wrote: ↑Sat Oct 19, 2024 11:14 pmI mean, in 1934 when Germans were asked whether they were better off now than when they were 4 years ago who could have known that the agent for change would be so Nazi like? I'm better off but I'm not sure I'd say I'm all the way to hell yeah! Some of that is personality but retiring and moving in the middle of the period has been a little scary due to inflation and the hit of buying a more expensive house. The flip side is that our retirement accounts look good.
