Party Party

Post by Jeff V »

Because Filipinos like to double-up on words.

Nov 13 my wife turns 40. She came here 12 years ago, and every year maintained she did not want to have a party and I obliged.

Not this time. The couple that owns the arts studio my daughter goes to for dance and music theater and my son for piano lessons owns a theater and wine bar downtown in the town which I live. I've rented the place next Sunday -- there will be open bar, the husband of the couple does an acoustic guitar/singing solo act and my wife has seen him before and likes him, so I contracted him to do a set. They also have regular karaoke there, which Filipinos love more than anything, so there's that after the set. I've arranged for Filipino catering (the store owned by our accountant makes the best lechon -- whole roasted pig, in the area), some friends will be bringing additional foods (including fried chicken from Jolibee, a fast-food restaurant as ubiquitous as McDonald's in the Philippines with a handful of locations in the Chicago area) and I'll get some pizzas for the kids. We just spent about $4K on the kids birthdays a month ago...this will come in around $2500 but should be a great time. I told the owner to bring her kids as they might appreciate the cultural experience.

So far, it's a surprise party. Hopefully it stays that way, one of her friends is going to keep her occupied after church, although bringing her to this place without tipping her off will be a challenge as its not something any of them would normally do (unless our kids are performing at the theater, which my daughter will a week later and my son 2 weeks after that). Can't tell the kids, they would squeal the instant they think it would give them a modicum of mom's favor.

Even some of my friends who I've not seen in several years appear to be coming. Should be a grand time...until my wife asks about the price...

I hope it goes great!

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Better hope she's not secretly a member here because if so you ruined it.

Ages ago Wife learned that I hate surprises and I can't organize any kind of social interaction, so birthday parties aren't even on our radar. We just fete one another. Tomorrow Wife turns 68; I'm taking her out for a fancy dinner. The election results will determine whether or not she has a happy birthday.

May she have the best birthday ever!

I'd also, sincerely, like to wish your wife one of the best birthdays she's ever had.
