Starcom: Unknown Space

Post by Daehawk »

I got this from Grifman for Christmas and the more I play it the more I fall in love with it and wanted to let you guys know how good it is . Its bringing back the Starflight, Star Control 2 and Star Trek vibes for me.

You start with your one little ship and after a few days Im still IN that ship but Ive upgraded it with modules and have now made plans to go to a nearby system to mine a bit and sell/buy the ores I need to be able to put some newly researched engines on her so I can reach a star I need to go to next that doesn't have a warp gate left by some strange long lost species.

Its a fairly simple game with more depth than it first shows. You can scan new planets and sometimes need to seen down a party. You dont control that party but there is a little animation of a lander going down to the surface. And they find stuff. It all helps your exp and sometimes you find an object to research which brings new tech.

You fight an unknown 'red' pirate faction in the beginning and need to find where they are coming from. Im still working on them. But I added stuff to my ship so I can fire now without draining my energy. ANd I have promoted my crew so they repair faster and aim better and such.

You can also randomly meet other aliens ..bad or good..some want to trade with you or give you info or tech or location data. Like I said it appears simple to just first look at it but it I think it goes way deep and Im just skimming the surface right now. Im so in love with this game. Not since Starflight or Star Control 2 have I felt this feeling of fun.

Sounds like the kind of game I like, I'll add it to my wishlist.
There are so many lesser known good games that get missed with ALL the choices on Steam,

Hell, there are probably some gems in my library from years ago I never got around to playing...
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

I dunno folks, I thought we were only supposed to post about early access games here. Is this even allowed? It definitely looks interesting, but not sure it looks $25 interesting.

It looks like I already have their previous (2019) game in my library so I might check that out to see if this is really up my alley.

...and now I see I played that for 18 hours back in 2020 and apparently finished it.

I mean, once you realized that you already owned it shouldn't yiu have known that it was finished within a day without even looking?

I have 330 games marked as finished on Steam.
- 8 maybe later
- 16 early access
- 4 uncategorized (generally means I am in the process of figuring out if they are going to finished or the final category)
- 1306 not interested

hehehe I play this in spurts. Ive totally rebuilt my original ship and got an extra gun now. Think I may concentrate on removing these red pirates before going back down to where the other Earth ship disappeared. Got my ass kicked hard down that way. Need to build up first before I go back. Just wish there was a better place to mine for ores to sell and trade for the stuff I need to make items I research.

Well the tedium of this game is getting to me. Its been a lot of fun but I cant make more headway than I have it seems. I cant find a good place to mine for stuff I need to build parts and guns for my ship.

But the worst part is the respawning stuff. If I clear a solar system of say 3 big ships and a station I dont expect them to be there next time through. Maaaybe sometimes randomly that could perhaps happen but not every single time. I get tired of fighting to clear a sector then when I come back to pass through to another I gotta do it again...every time.....I HATE that kind of decision making from a dev in a game. If I clear it...leave it cleared!

I agree with this. I have similar feelings about power scaling.
If I am struggling with a level 1 baddie, don't make me struggle with the same thing if I go back to that area after I hi
T level 100.. maybe I really want to judt plow through some baddies every once in a while..
I'd also be ok with an options toggle for both. This way people who complain about being bored can have it their way..

Side rant.
I get REALLY annoyed at people online who complain about difficulty option toggles. I can't remember species but I do remember people complaining about them. The vast majority of the time their complain boils down to having no self control. They feel that sine faces shouldn't have an easy option otherwise it's boring or something. I can partially understand if a game is just easy with no difficulty options but these people are specific upset about options. They feel like it would be too easy for them to switch to a lower level and that feels like cheating to them.

Thats a pretty unique build.

Im still using the starter one with some added items. I dotn seem to have any new items I can add and when I want to change something I never have any minerals. I only have a couple of a few minerals. When i do need some to build something I have to travel from my home space gate to the one up north at the trading station and sell everything I have to get the one i need.

Im not progressing at all. i cant kill stuff in any new area lately and i cant upgrade and everywhere I go its always those red pirates they always respawn. Between not able to go do anything, having to simply try to find minerals and the CONSTANT respawning I may be done.

I have been binging this and am pretty close to the end. Really good overall, with surprisingly strong world-building. The biggest downside is that some the missions, especially later-game missions, are mysteries that are tough to figure out on your own. I definitely have had to look up some stuff on the Steam forum for the game.

This is my map. maybe ive not explored enough but when i try i get blown up by powerful enemies. I still use the starter ship with upgraded guns, engines, crew, micro generators, and a havok system..and missiles.

But I cant get anywhere. I cant seem to research anything and if i do i never have the minerals I need. I have that 1 mining spot up north and trade depot. bout it. Kinda getting tired of this but love the game. Wish I could just get better equipment and ship.

Just finished. 20 hours. Way too much of that time was spent wandering around hoping I run into an actual objective to progress. I enjoyed it but I was also kind of annoyed by it.
