This is a hard one!
All of my favorite directors and acting people are dead. This doesn't mean that I don't like modern movies, but it's very hard to decide who's best among the living.

Does it matter if my favorite actress would be upset not being called my favorite actor?

Director: Gosh. The Coen Brothers in my head and Terry Gilliam in my heart.
Actress: Frances McDormand
Actor: Joaquin Phoenix
The latter two categories are just too crowded. Curse you for making me narrow it down! I'm too stoned for this. And also I'm sorry Jimmy J., I wanted to include you but I think I'll always love you disproportionately for Dead Man.

Re: Favorite living director, actress and actor
This is tough to answer as I don't know that I have one favorite of any of these, though there are many that I admire and appreciate and who I like most will fluctuate day by day.
But for a snapshot answer, I'd say:
Director: Robert Eggers
Actor: Barry Keoghan
Actress: Toni Collette
These don't represent "favorite of all time," but who I currently am paying attention to and would actively seek out their work.

Re: Favorite living director, actress and actor
Okay, you got major respect out of me for putting John Carpenter in that list.
I wish I could make a list, but who I think is the best living director/actor/actress changes almost daily. Every time I see a new movie or show and come across someone that impresses me, it gets updated.
But favorite director would have to be either Takashi Miike or Coen Bros (they're a team, you can't separate them).
Favorite Actor would be either Barry Keoghan or Mark Rylance
Favorite Actress would be either Sigourney Weaver or Frances McDormand
But these could all change by tomorrow at this time.

Re: Favorite living director, actress and actor
Same. There are really no actors or directors where I will watch their stuff by default, no matter how much I normally like them - whether because some of it isn't good or it's a genre that I don't like or a story that I don't care for.hepcat wrote: Wed Jan 22, 2025 3:01 pm I wish I could make a list, but who I think is the best living director changes almost monthly. On the flipside, I'll watch some stuff that's objectively not good because I'm in the mood for it or the actor is hot or it's a TV show that I started and now feel compelled to finish (looking at you, Blacklist - speaking of James Spader, he's one of my favorites but there are movies of his that I can't watch).
So without putting too much thought into it - for the moment:
Director: Richard Linklater or Wes Anderson
Actress: Cate Blanchett or Toni Collette
Actor: Cillian Murphy or Bradley Cooper

Re: Favorite living director, actress and actor
The ones I listed above I'll definitely watch/seek out if they put out something new. However, in the case of Miike, that's almost impossible as he's made over 100 films since he started in 1991, bouncing between big budget films to arthouse films to tv shows and tv movies. He makes incredibly controversial and transgressive films one day, and the next he's making a kid's tv show. The guy's a friggin' chaos machine.gilraen wrote: Wed Jan 22, 2025 3:26 pmSame.
