electronic debit card - tell me about it, please
I've received notification in an ongoing legal dispute that the money I am owed will be distributed as an electronic debit card. Be an old person I'm not familiar with these. I did look them up and got a lot of general information, but not the answer to the question I have, which is, can I take this piece of paper I'm going to be sent, or printed out on my computer, to my bank and deposit it in my account?

Re: electronic debit card - tell me about it, please
I got one of those for a settlement and it sucks. As I don't use apple pay or google pay etc., AFACT the only avenue I'd use to spend it is Amazon and Amazon is retailer of last resort for me. I haven't tested to see if it actually works on Amazon yet, because as I said, they are retailer of last resort. So I have this number for my virtual MC debit card sitting on my desktop with an expiration 12/26 waiting for me to find a use for it.jztemple2 wrote: Thu Jan 23, 2025 4:21 pm I've received notification in an ongoing legal dispute that the money I am owed will be distributed as an electronic debit card. The answer seems to depend on the terms and conditions imposed by whichever entity issues the virtual prepaid debit card. From a quick look, it sounds like some do allow funds to be transferred to an account while others do not, because reasons I guess.

Re: electronic debit card - tell me about it, please
I, too, was wronged -- WRONGED, I tell you -- by a company that made me whole with $8.92 on a virtual debit card. I ordered a $15 item on Amazon and entered it like a new credit/debit card, thinking Amazon would apply $8.92 and show me a balance due. Instead, the transaction completed, and was subsequently rejected. Apparently I'm going to have to find something that costs $8.92 or less because if there's a way to use it as partial payment, I can't figure it out.
Last time I got one of these I ended up giving it via PM to a forum member whose budget would notice nine bucks.

Aw shit, that doesn't bode well for me. Mine is for $5.95 and had a very long statement about how it could be used only for limited electronic stuff that pretty much does not apply to any thing I do. Amazon was my only hope but I don't do small Amazon purchases as I use it for free shipping and don't have prime. These suits always seem to be a lot of work on my end to leave me essentially with nothing.Kraken wrote: Thu Jan 23, 2025 5:10 pm I, too, was wronged -- WRONGED, I tell you -- by a company that made me whole with $8.92 on a virtual debit card. Someone should launch a class action against whoever decided that class action payments should be made with such a functionally useless mechanism.

Amazon gift cards are purchasable in "other" amounts.

Well, my wife, who knows more about these things, says we will wait until they will cut us a check. Thanks to everyone who replied

Re: electronic debit card - tell me about it, please
So (for the slow learners among us) I could buy a $8.92 gift card and then redeem that toward something of value?
I've already given this stupid thing more than $8.92 worth of my time and attention, but it's starting to feel personal.

+ friggen 1. I gave it way more time and attention attention than $5.95 out of spite in like 2017 when the problem arose. To get $5.95 that I can't spend is their way of laughing at me for screwing me again and again and now again. (The suit said I had a claim for $150+ by filing but then somehow they sit down to figure it out, they somehow end up with this. I'm guessing that's the pool of money for all the claimants after the lawyers got thars.Kraken wrote: Thu Jan 23, 2025 5:41 pm I've already given this stupid thing more than $8.92 worth of my time and attention, but it's starting to feel personal.

Thanx, Order place. We'll see what happens. There is a delay of 5 to 90 minutes.
Edit
I guess we'll wait and see for the next time I get something from Amazon. Could be months...Amount

You can also take it to the grocery store and tell them exactly how much of your bill you want to pay with that card, they enter that amount in the register before running the card, then you can give them a different form of payment for the remaining balance. The cashier should be able to specify the exact amount applied to a form of payment so you can split it up if you want.

Re: electronic debit card - tell me about it, please
There were stipulations that my electronic debit card was to through a "wallet" or by electronic purpose. Or perhaps limitations is a better way of describing it. The Amazon conversion Izzy posted seems to have worked for me. So instead of giving a check or a debit card, they game me an Amazon gift card for all intents and purposes.disarm wrote: Thu Jan 23, 2025 6:30 pm You can also take it to the grocery store and tell them exactly how much of your bill you want to pay with that card, they enter that amount in the register before running the card, then you can give them a different form of payment for the remaining balance. Yeah, if it's only an electronic card and not a physical card then most, if not all, B&M places won't let you enter the card info manually.LordMortis wrote: Thu Jan 23, 2025 6:54 pmThere were stipulations that my electronic debit card was to through a "wallet" or by electronic purpose. They get info about what the claimants buy, and can negotiate side deals with Amazon who get extra business out, as well as the card vendor for their fees.

That reminds me of the experience I had when the Visa gift cards came out. My Sister who lives in the U.S sent me some, and I couldn't use them in Canada as they weren't recognized anywhere. They ended up being pretty useless.

Ditto, just waiting for it to clear.LordMortis wrote: Thu Jan 23, 2025 5:52 pmThanx, Order place. We'll see what happens. There is a delay of 5 to 90 minutes.
I don't actually remember who wronged me or how. These class actions cross my desk once or twice a year and by the time they pay out, if they do, I've forgotten what they were for.LordMortis wrote: Thu Jan 23, 2025 5:44 pm I gave it way more time and attention attention than $5.95 out of spite in like 2017 when the problem arose. I'm sure a large fraction of those electronic debit cards are never redeemed, or only partially. I wonder who eventually gets the unclaimed money. Not the offending party, I hope.

Re: electronic debit card - tell me about it, please
I used it to reorder a compression wrist brace for my arthritic hands. The one I got last week is helping my mousing hand, so I bought another one for my other hand. $8.92 from the debit card + $5.06 in reward points = free! Ima have to buy two more, though, because now I have one black and one beige. The beige is close to my flesh tone so it's not obvious at a glance, but it also shows the dirt quickly.
Nice to cross that off my to-do list. Thanks, Isg!

Is there any chance this was issued through North Lane or MyPaymentVault? I just got notice I'm getting a refund that way and the reviews for it are horrible, so I'm hoping I can use the same Amazon trick shared here.

Those virtual settlement cards are such a hassle. Best move? Convert it to Amazon or PayPal.
