The Gothic series is in my top 10 video games of all times. So I'm definitely interested. Although I wish they'd just make a new one using the same sensibilities as Gothic 1.

I love the first part of games where finding a rusty pickaxe makes you feel like a badass. I had a bizarre graphical glitch where I tried to jump up on a platform. I knocked down a bow, but became a disembodied pickaxe, bow and quiver running around. Thankfully a save and quit fixed that.

Will have to try it. Did it keep G1's original strange controls? I remember it taking me 3 tries for those controls to snap into place for my mind. Once they did I found them some of the easiest Id ever used. They fit that game. Then in G2 they went to a normal control way and it felt off Gothic game. I think it gave me a choice but by then i was used to normal controls.

loved both games....pt1 a bit more. G3 was kinda a disappointment. I liked it well enough but half way through the game and halfway clearing the map I realized I was doing the same thing over and over where id save a area move on rinse repeat and i gave up and never returned.

I looked up Gothic gameplay and weirdly enough I don't think I ever played it. Which is surprising considering how much of an RPG nut I am. There's a chance that I didn't have the PC to run it at the time.

I also learned the controls, and I also got comfortable with them. They were fast and effective. With that said, they were completely unintuitive, and one of the most maligned elements of the game, and one that I think I've seen more than anything else as the reason that people couldn't get into the game, shelving it after a few hours.

I can't imagine that they'll release anything that problematic again, not after nearly a quarter of a century of improvements to how games and interfaces are controlled.

It's basic WSAD + mouse, and you can change them under settings.

From the Steam page, it sounds like they not constraining themselves to merely reproduce a one-for-one copy of the OG game on a new engine.
While the core pillars of the game remain intact, the remake enhances the experience with expanded and more detailed questlines, additional NPC routines and reactions, new traversal abilities, and a fully modernized combat system.
It's also worth noting, perhaps, that this is being developed by a new studio, so they don't really have any baggage in terms of the original game's idiosyncratic combat UI.

I tried the demo. I like the graphics and talking NPCs...I hate the controls. You cant remap anything and they are set to WASD which hurts my back and hips to try and reach and stay bent over playing. Also F is fixed to interact instead of middle mouse....its jus tall horrible and wrong to me. im a arrows and mouse user. You cant even use your mouse wheel to scroll things like items or anything. Ack!

This is coming out on Consoles too, so I bet you can use an xbox controller. The website does say "Master a modernized combat system that updates the core mechanics of the original, offering a more fluid and dynamic experience." Whatever that means.

I can't get over how much the protagonist looks just like this guy:

Finished the demo (it was pretty short). Finally got a rusty sword. Grilled up some meat. I like how you NPC's will help you fight and you can retrieve your arrows from dead beasts. I am down for the full game.

There's a post on Steam where a community manager confirmed that the final game support remappable controls.

I thought he slightly favored Sam Witwer.

I cooked soem meat..not sure how to find it to eat..cant seem to find my inv lol. I found some arrows but no bow. I was using a rusty pickaxe when i died helping the new camp guy hunt those bird things. I had a healing potion I found but i cant tell what my healthy is.

Also Id saved a bit back so decided to wait and try again later. Im gonna look for a ini file or something i can manually edit controls.
