Konung or Disciples

Post by Ripstar »

Which of these was better and why?

Kinda looking for a BG2 type game with a good story line.

Disciples is closer to Heroes of Might and Magic and Age of Wonders than BGII.

Disciples is a TBS game with a pretty cool "Roshomon" (sp?) style of story. Nothing like BG2 at all.

I owned both once. Both have interesting bits. Very different games. The closest to BG2 would be Konung.

I liked Disciples much more. I suspect I'm not alone in that. Disciples is a solo HOMM type game, sort of a cross between a puzzle game and a 4x. I really admire the combat in Disciples, but it has been termed simplistic. The artwork and flash in the Disciples line of games has just been superb. It has a sequel which spawned several expansion packs and gold versions.

Konung is a cross between diablo, an RPG and an RTS. You make decisions that affect your character and the world. I seem to remember some crafting bit that was considered clever. On the whole, translation issues doomed Konung for me. They were trying to come off as sollumn, but instead it just sounded hilarious. The translation stuff was enough to drive me from the game after a couple of hours. IIRC there is a sequel in the pipeline.

If you look around you can find a demo of some version of Disciples. While the chrome has changed a good bit, the gameplay is "classic." Frankly, I think you can find better games than these two.

hmmm. bg2 type game.....I'm not much of an RPG player, but....

Are you married to the isometric view? If so..I assume you've played Fallout, Fallout2 and Planescape. I preferred all those to BG2, but they are not quite as vast.

If you are not fps allergic the stories of System Shock, System Shock2, Deus Ex, Thief, Thief2 and....there's a James Bond girl game set....the first one of those was well thought of and the name just elludes me at the moment. Some nice soul will help out I'm sure.

Those are all classics. While a step below those in quality, you can still find plenty of gameplay in Morrowind or Arcanum.

Knights of the old republic and it's sequel are shorter than BG2, but they're very good games. If you liked the moral dimension, they would be a good fit.

If you want bit and retro doesn't bother you, have you looked at the spiderweb games? The demo's were very good sized.

If you admired the puzzle like combat of BG, you might look into the temple of elemental evil.

If you want to look outside the rpg mode...we can start with plenty of other games. Seriously, life is too short to be spending it playing things like Konung.

Obvious first step to me would be the Icewind Dale series, those are pretty good.

Konung, is not good. In fact, it's so not good, it's....not not not good (had to get an extra not in to negate the double negative).

Disciples II rocked. I'm hoping one day they'll put all 3 expansion packs out together in a gold edition.

Generally speaking, if a thread is about multiple pc titles, it should go in General Gaming. So off you go.

Do not bother with Konung unless you have great patience. If you want a BG type game (isometric), go to Spiderwebsoftware's site and pick up one of their games. They may be dated, but they have the mechanics down perfectly. Another possibility is Prince of Qin and its sequel (which I can't recall).
