What WWII game is most like Close Combat 1-4?

Post by jpinard »

I never did purchase any of the big crop of WWII games that came out over the last 2 years. Games like:
* CodeName Panzers: Phase One.
* Silent Storm.
* Heroes of WWII.

Were any games released that were anything like Close Combat's 1 through 4?

How about Squad Assault: West Front? IIRC, it's essentially a 3D version of Close Combat, from the same designer.

Jeff, I just recently got Soldiers - Heroes of WW2, and I can't say enough good things about it. It's really one of the best PC games I've ever played. I can't say it's like CC 1-4, but you should get this game, by all means.

And the best part ... It's only $9.99!

I'm going to move this thread over to PC Gaming in General, because it's not really about a single PC game - it's asking about games in general that were like some other games.
That's my purse! I don't know you!

Yes - it was called 'Close Combat: Invasion Normandy' and was really one of the better ones.

How in ther world did I miss that? The last one I remember was CC4 and was disappointed in strayed too much from the open-ended options of CC3 (my favorite of the series).

I finally got my first trip out of the house and Best Buy matched ebgames $9.99 price-point. I'm going to load it up right now!

Combat Mission is also nothing at all like Close Combat (it isn't real time, for starters).

Eric Young's Squad Assault is the latest in the Close Combat lineage. I thought it was ok (this coming from someone who didn't like CC at all).

Just whatever you do, stay away from GI Combat.

3 of us got together last night and did the Chepel mission in Coop - was very nice. Then moved onto lighthouse and failed.

Great evening of playing though.

Aware of that, I found all the Close Combat games more akin to "Ants At War" squinting at the screen and clicking with the mouse like mad. Not my idea of fun. Just my 2 cents worth.

Oh, I much preferred Combat Mission as well. I don't even consider CC to be a contemporary; it is completely different, and mostly not in a good way.

I did kind of enjoy the third one, but mainly for its setting, not its mechanics. Of course, CM : BB has all but obliterated its memory :)
