Game slump. Bored. Suggestions?
Meh. Bored with WoW, reinstalled CoH and bored with that. Trying to play KOTOR for the third time and bored with that.
When I get bored like this, I usually go for nostalgia. Can anyone recommend a party-based rpg that I might not have played? (Not Wiz 8, not Avernum, though stuff like that is fine -- shareware and good gameplay/crappy graphics is fine).

I haven't touched a game in about a month. I havent posted on the forums in about that long too (miss me anyone? I thought so). Anyways, maybe it was exams, graduating, and doing the bar application the week before it was due, but I have just about lost all interest-although my TV obsession is Strong in the Force.
Anyways, if you figure it out Fed, please let me know before barbri starts and I lose what little life I have.

*I* missed you, Rincewind.
Fedster, I can't help with a party-based fantasy RPG, but maybe something like the original Freedom Force would be enjoyable? Of course if CoH isn't appealing to you, then this may not, either. But the over-the-top campiness can be rather entertaining (and addictive).

About a week ago I began looking for my old copies of 6,7, or 8. I can't find them thoughandon wrote:Might and Magic Series Starting with MM6? Some of my favorite RPG's

Edit: I started up Ultima 7 instead last night via Exult. I haven't played this since I first beat it back in '93. It was such a great game I remembered every aspect of it so it held no surprises. I can't wait to get into it again - I just hope I can stick with it.

Hey Fed, Geneforge 3 is in beta right now (we're about 3 weeks along I think). Have you played the previous games? Now might not be a bad time to start. . .
I might also make another suggestion for you: turn to the GBA and get some good TBS lovin in the form of Advanced Wars, Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced, or Fire Emblem (& their ilk). I'm ranking those in terms of how good I think the games are overall. This is a more expensive undertaking (at minimum: you need a GBA SP to play them), but IMO it's worth it for the strategy goodness.
Plus, you can check out stuff like Zelda: Minish Cap, or the metroid games, or the Castlevanias. Good platformers, there (old school platformers, that is). Also, Rebel Star: Tactical Command is coming out in August on the system.
I'd suggest giving Mount & Blade a try if you haven't. Do you play rogue likes at all?
Oh, and maybe you should check out Teudogar: The Alliance with Rome. I can't recall if we've discussed it (I'm thinking we have), but now might not be a bad time to consider registering it if you enjoy the shareware (I would, but I have zero time).

How did you get this to work on XP? I just got the Platinum Collection but I can't get it to boot up. Any suggestions would be great.andon wrote:Might and Magic Series Starting with MM6? Some of my favorite RPG's

I got a copy of Gothic 2 based on forum effect a few months ago. I'd never played it. I installed it last week, played two hours, and put it away because I'm into Guild Wars and don't want to quit that right now.
It has a horribly unintuitive interface, that's true, but after an hour I'd gotten used to it. When I scale back Guild Wars, I will dive into this game. I can tell, based on my relatively brief exposure, that Gothic 2 is going to be one of the best games I will ever play.

I haven't played anything new in months either (since I don't HAVE to play anything anymore....)
I did order Horse & Musket 2 last week. Since it looks to be exactly the same as Horse & Musket 1, I doubt I'll play it much. But I recently had to rebuild my system, my H&M disk is smashed, and GoGamer had it on sale, so...

Hmmm. I think I have that one sitting around unplayed someplace.Captain Caveman wrote:Damn straight. Any essential mods/tweaks?

I sooo want to play Geneforge 3 on my Mac just so I could post first impressions before anyone else. But I really didn't like the combat in Geneforge 1, so I have avoided it.Peacedog wrote:Hey Fed, Geneforge 3 is in beta right now (we're about 3 weeks along I think). I am in the same boat though Mr. Fed. I really wish their was a new version of Helleron to play with. I love that game, but it could be so much better.
For motivation and so Jeff V can make me look bad:

2009 Finals: Biking: 93 miles Running: 158 miles (I know it sucked, but I had a hernia most of the year)

I've been looking for the same thing for a few months now. I went back and started playing old dos games (Wasteland, Eye of the Beholder, etc), but nothing was grabbing me. I finally ended up playing Avernum 3. It really wasn't what I was looking for, but I just couldn't find anything else.Mr. Fed wrote:That's exactly what I'm looking for.Lee wrote: I am in the same boat though Mr. Fed. I played the crap out of Hellheron (as some may know since I did create all this) and just can't seem to play it again. I tried playing X-Com again, but it wouldn't grab me. I even played (and finished) that piece of crap called Beyond Divinity. All the new RPGs are single player light RPGs (Dungeon Lords may be a little deeper, not sure yet). I really wish there was a stat heavy, 6-8 unit party, turn based, old school RPG out there that I could sink my teeth into.
Luckily, Mount & Blade grabbed me momentarily (being a sucker for any type of decent melee combat game). But that is running out and I have Vampire: Bloodlines sitting here looking completely boring. While I enjoyed Geneforge 2, I'm probably not in the mood for Geneforge 3. But that could change, and I'm sure eventually I'll get it. I'd probably play Gothic 2 again if that expansion had beeen released for English speakers.
There has got to be something out there I'm missing...

Yep. I've already played it. I find I have a very hard time going back and replaying games that I've already played. I start off and then it just fizzles. If I don't replay it right after I finish the first time, it is almost impossible for me to get back into it. Including great games like Wasteland, Fallout, PS:T, etc. I just can't get back into them. Some stupid character flaw I suppose.ChrisGwinn wrote:... came out three and a half years ago. Which means that everybody who wants a game like that has already played it.Carpet_pissr wrote:WIZARDRY 8

I'm really in a gaming slump myself. Got tired of WoW, tried CoH again, didn't want to grind with that one either, got Guild Wars, and though I like it, I'm still just not feeling like playing it. I do have M&M 6-9, but can't get the 6th one to play with WinXP either, and that would be the one I'd want to play. I'll probably try Fallout in a few days to try and get out of this dis-interest I'm having in even getting into a game. Maybe I just don't care to much for online games, as that seems to be what got me so 'out' of gaming that I don't even feel like putting a game in lately to even try to get out of the slump. Sorry I don't have any suggestions for you, as it seems I'm in the same slump.

I'm in the same boat. After burning out on WoW, I can't make myself play anything lately. I started realizing how much time I was wasting In WoW, and now every game seems to be a waste of time to me. I reloaded Startopia, played a few missions, and quit playing. I reinstalled Mafia, and the thought of having to redo levels due to the save system made me exit. I need a good, goal oriented, story-driven game that doesn't boil down to a perpetual stat grind. Any RTS is out since I'm more or less permanently soured on those. I saw that there is a Disciples 2 Gold pack that has the original game and all of the expansions for about $30. I may pick that up after work and sink my teeth into that for a while.snoleopard wrote:I'm really in a gaming slump myself. I'm getting into Jade Empire, and really enjoying it. If you liked KOTOR, you should enjoy this one. A little HL2 or CS: Source to mix things up. Otherwise I am in a mild slump as well. Perhaps Battlefield 2 will break the spell come June.
Consider this another endorsement of the Freedom Force games. Enjoyed the first one, haven't started the 2nd yet.

Ha, I'm in the WoW-burnout slump too. I stopped playing it last March after my lead character hit level 30, and I've not been able to get interested in anything since. It's almost as if Blizzard programmed hypnotic suggestions into WoW to prevent people from playing anything else...mathfed wrote:I'm in the same boat. The new stuff ain't doing it for me. Dungeon Lords is pretty good, but Arx Fatalis is much better - so is morrowind.
EE2 is aweful.. Act of War is bugged to death.. Stronghold2 turned out to be a stinker.. Pariah blows.
The list goes on and on.. Essentially, so far this year most of the big titles to come out already have been stinkers.. Trackmania Sunrise, SH3, SCCT and Swat4 are pretty decent, but nothing i'd blow up over.
I just got Cossacks2 for my son, I guess I should see how that stacks up. He seems to really like it. If that doesn't grab me, i'll pray for Imperial Glory to stack up, and well, if that doesn't the summer is blown - i'll just play my backstock of games and ignore the new crap for awhile.
