Sell me on an RTS

I generally hate RTSs but perhaps maybe I'm too harsh. So I'm looking for people to suggest an RTS. A lot of you know I have the use of only one hand so anything that requires a lot of keyboard short cuts (such as Homeworld 2) is kind of rulled out. I'm kind of looking at Warhammer 40k and Act of War.

I dont think you could go wrong with something like rise of nations. Dawn of war is ok, but the single player campaign is a complete and utter joke because of how short it was.

Act of War is pretty fun, it's doesn't really offer anything new, except for resoure management. It pays homage to the C&C days.

Dawn of war is alright, i dind't really like the single player. There's a lot of unit babysitting so that might be a little hard for you.

I was just gonna suggest Warhammer. You might also like Ground Control 2.

HW2 is great, and I NEVER used keyboard shortcuts. Pause and issue orders is your friend :)

I have been buying RTS games for years.Never played them much as I couldn't keep my mouse up with the action but the games looked so cool! I have recently given up even buying them as they just sit there waiting for me to gain so co-ordination.Something that ain't gonna happen.

Assuming you're talking about "conventional" RTS games, Rise of Nations is the only one I'm fond enough of to recommend. If you throw in other game that don't have turns, then I would add all of the Total War games, Hearts of Iron 2, and Crusader Kings. I could come up with more recommendations if you tell me what sort of setting you like.

Warhammer! The one and only RTS that I've ever enjoyed for its gameplay. Others, such as Homeworld and Sacrifice I admired, but didn't really have FUN playing.

The single-player is pretty mediocre, granted, but the expansion should fix that.

The only RTS I've played all the way through the single-player campaign was Starcraft. Since you've probably already either played it, or want something more recent, I'd suggest Rise of Nations. Starcraft just had so much more going for it in terms of the single-player campaign though.

I hate RTS games but Rise of Nations held my attention for quite a while.

Rise of Nations was fun without being frenetic. In a non-RTS genre (albeit one with time as a factor) I've just finished Tropico 2 Pirates Cove: it's a builder with adjustable speed & lighthearted theme; bargain priced now. Also doesn't require expert mouse handling, hotkeys.

I dislike RTS's in general myself and I'd suggest Warhammer 40K. It's really easy to get into, and the units are really cool. If you like skirmishes be warned. You can't turtle in the game and survive. You'll get overwhelmed.

I do have an issue though. The game keeps hardlocking my machine. I'm guessing it has something to do with the SLI setup in my rig. There are some postings on the THQ boards about machines that exceed the system requirements by alot having issues. Why the hell would having a top of the line machine cause problems? It really pisses me off because the game rocks.

I'm also not a big fan of RTS but I am having a lot of fun with Spellforce. It is a RTS/RPG hybrid that has a fairly basic RTS element: battles seem to be confined to single areas (so far, anyway) so it is more relaxed than your average RTS.

If you're new to RTS, you might try selecting your first one based on your gaming background:

FPS/action - Dawn of War, Act of War
RPG - Warlords Battlecry series, Warcraft III
Civs - Rise of Nations
Wargames - Kohan series, Total War series
Simulations - Soldiers: HOWW2, Nexus

Compare/contrast with Warlords Battlecry? (I only played WBC2 & the demo for 3, but may pick up the full version if I ever see it cheaply enough.) I'm not much of a RTS kind of guy, but RTS with RPG elements could intrigue me...

Meal: I never played the Battle Cry's so I can't say too much about how they compare. I know I didn't like the demo of W:BC (I or II, not really sure). Spellforce sometimes has your charcter wander around with a small party of heroes and other times has you raising armies to take down the baddies. The RPG part is like Diablo-lite and the RTS is RTS-lite. Adds up to fun for me but may not satisfy others.

Definitely sounds intriguing to me. Thanks for putting it on my radar.

I'm also an RPG fan first, TBS fan second, and RTS fan fourth (had to fit Adventure in there somewhere :) ).

Having said that, pausable RT is a must for me. Not just the ability to pause, but the ability to issue commands that will be executed while paused. I no-canna twitch @ light speed.
Variable difficutly levels are a must, as are formations and 'make sense' resource gathering w/o an overabundance of micromanagement.

RoN.

Now only if they would add Hungarians as a playable race/country it would 'Szerbus Magyar'.

What's funny is I wanted to be sold too and it just wasn't happenin'

I played age of empires 1 and 2, Warcraft 2 &3, Starcraft, Alpha Centauri, and civ 2 and 3. But after Warcraft 3, the genre just doesn't work for me anymore. RomeTW demo played okay but I just cant see myself playing for hours on end. Same with Rise of Nations.

sorry, but you guys failed the threads mission statment.

I'm still not sold.
(well Spellforce maybe, but trust me, I'm still not sold)

I used to love RTS, but like a lot of the lads on this thread, I've just lost all interest. I'm fed up with wankers like Lucusarts who decide that the PC market can't handle a Sam and Max, yet decide's that we are all dieing for yet another RTS based upon the Star Wars francaise. Ea's the same. Along with WW2 FPS, it has to be the most abused genre on the planet.

Simulations - Soldiers: HOWW2, Nexus
Generally I don't like RTS, the act of setting up your units and sending them into battle and hoping they do the right thing does not usually appeal. IN MP time and time again the rush in RTS seems to hold good

Although Soldiers is still an RTS - its direct control aspect makes it a whole different beast when playing - you also don't get effected by the rush - or not with the options I play anyway :)

I could go on - but i've done so already

Then you should consider giving Nexus a try, as well. ;)

I tried the demo and really didn't enjoy it - certainly I wouldn't place Soldiers and Nexus as similar game types. Nexus is more a space combat simulation and felt remote - didn't enjoy it :(

Another nod to Spellforce. I normally don't like RTS's (like Starcraft), but for some reason this game clicked. It's got all the basics of an RTS without having to be super good at it.

It's got a nice story, a large world, and it's reeeeeeally long. Like freakishly long. Still not sure how I finished it, but it was fun the whole way through.
