out of the loop for two years - what have I missed?

Post by Ka Faraq Gatri »

I haven't had a viable gaming rig for about two years now - a situation I'm hoping to rectify soon :)

I want to pick up a couple of games to break in my new system but I haven't kept tabs on what has been going on in PC gaming and I'd appreciate any recommendations.

I prefer turn-based strategy and party-based RPGs but I'm not averse to a good RTS (skirmish mode a must as I don't have time for campaigns)

I already have Fate which just works on my current PC - so far my shortlist of games to investigate consists of:

- Evil Genius
- Railroad Tycoon 3
- Space Colony
- Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War

what else should I be considering?

Warhammer is a lot of fun, so is Rome. I'd also recommend Rise Of Nations for some more RTSing goodness (but the ability to pause and give orders, interesting national border ideas, other fun stuff).

Another vote for Mafia. I don't know why but I was thinking that was more than 2 years old. I've been playing it again this week, and it still kicks ass.

You want Silent Storm - turn based strategy with party RPG elements, and fantastically done.

Also consider the Knights of the Old Republic titles (1 and 2) for a great party based RPG. Rome: Total War for your grand strategy fix. The RTS recommendation would be Rise of Nations. Some other possibles:

Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic (turn based strategy)
Kohan II (an intelligent RTS)
Spellforce (a combination RTS/RPG)
What doesn't kill me makes me stranger.

A little bit different than what you've been playing but if you're getting a new rig why not try out Chronicles of Riddick-Butcher Bay? Nice graphics, great gameplay and an interesting story. I am not a FPS guy but that game really won me over.

Just checked. It was released in '02, so you're right. But that's no reason not to recommend it. ;)

If you're at all interested in PBEM TBS, Dominions 2 can't be beat.

You may have already played it, as it's pretty old, but no TBS collection is complete without Space Empires IV Gold.

Especially since it can be found for about 5 bucks these days. Steal of the century, if you ask me.

thanks for the suggestions.

I hit a few stores today and walked away with:
- Warhammer: Dawn Of War
- Tiger Woods 2005
- Space Colony
- Silent Storm
- Vega$: Make It Big!
- Evil Genius
- Ghost Master
- Railroad Tycoon 3

which should keep me happy for a while. now I just need to survive the next two weeks waiting on my new PC.

of the other games mentioned I already have Rise Of Nations, Disciples II, Freedom Force 1, I Was An Atomic Mutant!, Galactic Civilizations, Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic, Dominions 2 & Space Empires IV Gold.

and Beyond Good & Evil & KOTOR1 on X-BOX.

so I guess I'm doing better than I thought. :D

Maybe not RTS in the sence many people refer to , but "Silent hunter III" is a very good game.
