Octopus Overlords

As much as I wish I could get into deeper games, what little time I get to play any games goes to first person shooters. They give quick, immersive action and I get more from playing 20 minutes of a fps than a strategy game (as much as I enjoy strategy games). Thing is, I've played most every "top shelf" fps: Doom3, HL2, Farcry, Painkiller, Republic Commando, etc. I also have Area 51, BattleFront2.

Are there any other good ones out there you guys can recommend? I would have liked Boiling Point, but I've just heard that there are too many problems. I enjoy action, but really like the exploration and cool scenery. How are Project Snowblind or Pariah if I can find them cheap? Or any other recent ones worth playing?

I've heard nothing but good things about Chronicals of Riddick and it's only 19.99. It will show off your new video card as well.

Have you played SWAT4?

Yes to both of them. Excellent games. I was thinking of digging out Operation Flashpoint, but I'm looking for more of a straight shooter. I've also played all of the WWII shooters, including BIA, CoD, MoH, and all the other 3 letter titles.

Unreal Tournament 2004, onslaught offers you exactly what you crave if you haven't tried it yet. Game is so configurable you can set it up almost anyway you like.

Max Payne was a good thrid person shooter.

Red Faction, the first one was also a good fps.

The Suffering if you can find it was also good.

Riddick was good too.

What if you've played them all...

EDIT: Any mods for the games you have that you haven't tried? I just dl'd Red Orchestra for UT2k4. I played v1 but havent played it since. They now have tanks . Lots of other more modern mods I saw too that I tried a while back but need to try again to see how they are now.

That's what I was afraid of...Think I'll pull out an oldie like Quake2.

I'm playing through XIII now on my PC. It's not the end-all be-all of shooters but it's fun, great graphics and runs nicely on my system.

Give Boiling Point a look. There aren't half as many bugs in it as people claim, and the last patch fixed a lot of things. Patch 2.0 for Boiling Point is coming next week I believe.

If you like nice scenery, exploration, and open ended freeform type gameplay, then pick it up. I've seen it for $20-30 range in price, a real bargin. I have about 30 hours of gameplay in BP, and anticipate doubling that.

Something about games where I can just drive around exploring, kill stuff, steal stuff, or basically screw around really get me excited. So BP was a fresh and cool break from the normal rail games.

There is supposed to be a pretty good mod out for Far Cry but I can't remember what it's called at the moment.

I just started Chaos Theory. 3rd-person but close enough for my book.

And it's more of a sneaker than a shooter. Somehow I don't think that's what he's looking for.

I've heard nothing but bad things about Pariah, but I just finished Snowblind on the XBox and I rather enjoyed it. Story isn't great, but the cinematics are well staged and choreographed with a lot of style. There's a lot of atmosphere to it, and you can really really tell that it was originally going to be in the Deus Ex universe. Though Snowblind is more of a comic book take on that same theme. Whether that's a good or bad thing is subjective. I'd say if you can find it for cheap, go for it.

Tribes: Vengeance has an exceptional single-player campaign but I know some people had problems with since it really doubles as a tutorial for the multiplayer at parts. But I really loved just about every minute of it. One of the better stories I've seen in a shooter, with one of my favorite endings ever.

Have you played Tron 2.0? Quite possibly one of the my favorite shooters in the past several years.

About how long is the single player campaign? I never even bothered looking at this, since I just assumed it would be multiplayer only.

I'd guess at around 10 hours. Standard length, these days.

have you tried playing Serious Sam before?

I was also looking for a FPS recently. Picked up Riddick and it rocks pretty hard.

I just finished playing Men of Valor a week or so ago. That game was really good. You can definitely tell it was created by the Allied Assault team. A little difficult in some places, but still a decent (and rather raw) shooter.

I was almost tempted to try Advanced Battlegrounds until I got to looking at the box and realized that Dreamcatcher had just taken Chrome, renamed it and put it in a fancy new box.

Go for an older game.


Play Strife. Came out after Quake, so no one really paid attention to it. Really dated graphics, but it has a lot of RPG-lite elements to it.

Strife was excellent. Does it work in xp w/ sound and everything? If so, I'm digging that one out. I love old school shooters like that.

Scary thing is, I've played almost every game posted here. I recently dug out Soldier of Fortune just for the violent action to blow off steam. I might give Halo a try on the PC even though I played it on the xbox.

I am also trying to get Doom, Hexen, etc. even Quake to work on the PSP - hey if I can't play new games, then maybe I can play old games on new machines.

yEA Kingpin is good, even tho i have it, havent played it yet.

Picked up Max Payne 2 for 8 bucks used at EB. Not bad for a popcorn-kinda game: you can jump in and jump out of this thing at any time and you're not really going to miss too much. A fun shoot 'em up, but it really doesn't hold a candle to the immersion factor of newer games like HL2, at least for me.

Playing Delta Force XTreme right now. I'm loving it because it's easy to get into and feels nice and retro while looking good because of its conversion to the new engine.

I'll also second "The Suffering". It defaults to 3rd person I think, but I played through the entire thing in first person with excellent results. One of my favorite and most disturbing games ever.

I started on "Chrome", but got bored with it pretty quickly. i just picked up "Breed" but haven't tried it yet--not supposed to be all that good really, but I'm an FPS junkie.

I'm sure everyone is going to think this is the worst suggestion ever, but what about Postal 2? I recently played through it for the first time, and I actually found it pretty decent. Though I guess I'm one of the few who did.

Also, what about the No One Lives Forever games? They're kind of old, but..eh.

The gameplay mechanics on Postal 2 are fine. It is, afterall, based on the Quake 2 engine. If you don't mind the humor of it, it's okay. Not as bad as it was made out to be but nothing spectacular.

Actually, it's the Unreal engine.

I couldn't play for more than 15 minutes. The load times between zones were insane, and on the first mission, I had to go through 3 zones, meaning I was pissed off after 10 minutes of play. I had to kill somebody at some point, and the guns all sucked.
Man, did I hate that game.

I remember people complaining about that stuff when it first came out as well. They released a patch that significantly lowers the load times and makes the weapons better. Of course, I have the Share the Pain version which already has those changes made. Load times are 15 seconds at the most, though I'd guess closer to 10 the majority of the time.
