Best Independent Games
Which are your favorite games from independent game developers? I'm just now checking out the Starscape demo and I'm enjoying it very much. So much so that I think I'll have to bite the bullet on this one and make a purchase.
Also on my list is Samurai. The addictive demo is probably more than enough to convince me.

The only one that's really impressed me of late is Mount and Blade.
Even though it's still in beta, I didn't hesitate to pay the $11. If I never play it again, I got my money's worth.

Maybe next year, maybe no go

Sorry, I should have given both links. Here's Samurai. What a great game!

While I wait for your recommendations for the greatest independent game, I'll offer another one:
If you're a fan of Breakout style games, they just don't get better than this:

At the moment: Mount & Blade, Fate, and Geneforge. I'm not too sure of what makes an independent company but these three seem to fit the bill.
The opinions expressed by JonathanStrange are solely those of JonathanStrange and do not reflect the opinions of OctopusOverlords.com, the forum members of OctopusOverlords, the elusive Mr. Norrell, or JonathanStrange.

Mount and Blade is probably the best indie game I have ever played. Recently I have also really enjoyed Wik and the Fable of Souls.

Sherlock (a logic puzzle game) is one of my all time favorites. I used to be able to play it for hours upon hours. I introduced it to my mother's husband years ago and he still plays every night to this day.

There are a couple in-development games that I am watching that look rather promising, too.

I find I typically agree with the indie game reviews at Game Tunnel, and there certainly are a lot of games out there.

Downloaded this one tonight and it is pretty awesome. Might have missed it before as its not really clear that there's a demo. You sort of have to guess that it must include a demo mode.Mudfrost wrote:Sorry, I should have given both links. Here's Samurai. What a great game!

After downloading the demo, I'd have to say Mount and Blade is really high up there in the running for best independant game. It isn't best only because it's still a work in progress and it shows.
But give this game another year in development and a bigger budget and this could seriously be RPG of the year on PCs and Consoles.

Space Empires IV (soon to be 5) is a terrific 4x space strategy game;
Galactic Civilizations is another terrific 4x space strategy game;
Mount & Blade is a nice action/rpg--though it still clearly is in beta;
Fate is a Diablo/Sacred-style hack n slash descendant of Nethack;
the Yendor series is 3 terrific (though somewhat dated) Might&Magic style games;
Helherron was a delightful tile rpg (similar to the early Ultimas, though not as broad in scope);
Nahlakh, still available, I'm pretty sure, from Tom Proudfoot is another;
many action/strategy games available from various sources--my favorites are Mummy Maze, Bookworm, Ricochet, and Zuma Deluxe;
I'd be remiss in not mentioning 2 of my most favorite games of the past year, though neither is from an indy developer: Psychonauts and Beyond Good and Evil. Both need as much positive word of mouth as we can generate; we need far more games like them!

War! Age of Imperialism was an excellent adaptation of a boardgame. Very fun TB strategy game:
