Looking for a quick, easy to learn game

Post by Lee »

I am on vacation and need a game that is easy to get into and can be played in spurts. I have my laptop with me (Centrino 1.4 512meg, Radeon9600 128meg), so it's pretty capable, but not up for anythign too hardcore. I have been playing a Bejeweled 2 mostly. But I have been looking at other stuff. I really want something cheap too.

Been looking at:
Armies of Exigo (not cheap yet)
The newest Settlers game (forgot the full name)
NWN (probaly not quick, and not cheap)
Strange Adventures in Infinite space (demo is fun, does it get borning?)
Wrestling Spirit (not a wrestling fan, but it looks interesting)
Rollercoaster Tycoon:Splashed (Wasn't a huge fan of the first, but I liked it)
Sacred (Leaning towards this one. $20 and they updated a lot in the PLUS patch)

Any advice? I have Fate, Pirates, Sims 2 etc but I didn't bring them. I will probably buy something tomorrow. Have to spend the day fixing my sisters computer and then some drinking at the Red Hook brewery today. :)
For motivation and so Jeff V can make me look bad:
2010 Totals: Biking: 65 miles Running: 393 miles
2009 Finals: Biking: 93 miles Running: 158 miles (I know it sucked, but I had a hernia most of the year)

Mount and Blade.

Think of it as Pirates! on land in medieval times. The combat is much better though.

It's only available online and it's $15. However, while you are buying the game and any future updates, the game isn't really complete. It's a small company that's basically making the game bit by bit and posting updates as they reach milestones. Right now the gameplay itself is pretty complete but needs balancing, and the world needs more fleshing out.

King of Dragon Pass, an oldie and a cult favorite, is still fun to play and you can get it by Fed Ex probably tomorrow. It runs on Windows XP though it's over 7 years old.

$19.95 and you will get far more value out of it than it costs.
Over here.

King of Dragon Pass is an excellent game.
I really wish they'd make more games like that. Sure, it isn't fancy, and you can never be sure what consequences your actions will have, but that's why its so fun!

I played the demo for King of Dragon Pass years ago and it was kind of fun. I just got the idea that it would get repetitive fast. I am wrong?

Mount and Blade looks interesting but I have stayed away because it looked too arcadish. Pirates was simple enough that I didn't get bored with it even if it is action oriented, is it the same case with M&B? I really don't want a steep learning curve.

Very, very easy game to pick up. You start in a safe town with a training ground nearby you can use. Your first 20 minutes or so may be a tad frustrating, but once you get the hang of combat it's a huge blast. Nice game to load up and spend 30 minutes or a few hours slaughtering bandits. :)

Of the list you mentioned probably Sacred will give you the most mindless fun for the buck. It's a good Diablo style game.

Awesome, a book store in Burien has King of Dragon Pass. Will have to take a road trip tomorrow and pick it up.

This is going to sound funny coming from me, but one of the problem with King of Dragon Pass was that it wasn't meant for computer gamers. The gaming press had no clue what to make of it. Saying it's like a chose your own adventure game, makes it sound stupid as all get out, but that's really the closest thing that most people have experienced.

KODP is an absolutely superb game. It didn't make a go of it financially and A# moved on to other projects. I've always thought a version in (non-glorantha) colonial days would be a big hit with the edutational crowd, but it wasn't worth A#'s time.

There was an idie card game that came out a few years ago. It reminded me a lot of the card game that was part of Might and Magic XII (?) - the one you would play in the taverns?

Anyway, this card game was just re-released IIRC. Updated with new cards and rules. It plays a bit like Magic. It seems pretty simple at first, but it's actually pretty fun. The decks had elemental themes.

Totally blanking on the name though.
Maybe next year, maybe no go

It was based on the Runequest pen and paper RPG, which is now obscure but was (imho) the best such game of its day, narrowly edging out Traveller.

He might also be referring to Astral Tournament or its sequel, Astral Masters.
